The La Scala version certainly has higher production values (more money)and a very experienced orchestra, It looks great, but I'll go with Mr. Foss' humility and directness of emotion and the fact that the separation of timings for real (2 conductors) and the distant trumpet are important parts of a genuine performance. Whereas Mr. Dudamel's direction seems a bit melodramatic for this kind of work, with the result that the trumpet is right in your face, not quite the intention of the composer.
that's the way it's supposed to be... maybe not the camera, but the three ensembles are to play independantly. they're all playing in different tempi so the only real thing the conductor could do is cue for the trumpet and the flutes. the trumpet is supposed to be behind the audience, so maybe that's why he's not on screen... perhaps...
In my opinion, one of the best compositions from last Century... the music shows our nihilism...the postmodern age...without something or someone to reference or support... without answer(althoug it is there, in the strings).
very nice to see and hear such a clean university orchestra with all those young people, performing such a great piece of profound and moving music. This is one of those greatgreat pieces of music once u hear it u will never b the same again. thnx for posting

On one performance I remember, the trumpet player had to play from "back stage". On certain
parts, the door had to be opened, half opened or closed. And I was the proud "Door opener" :-) !

The music doesn't begin until 1:08 which is a supreme annoyance.

The trumpet player was in the balcony and Mr. Foss acknowledges him at the end of the piece.

we listened to that in our music class today and found a million words to describe the mood in that piece of music

I am of the impression that Foss is overwhelmed by the mastery of this piece.

I would love to know what Rorem thinks of this piece. It is haunting.

The aching and yearning in this piece is beyond description! I read once that Leonard Bernstein felt it was the best piece of music ever composed!

Probably one of the best compositions ever made by an American composer.
The confused flutes don't have an answer
for the questioning trumpet.
See "Hollow Pursuit", with the same music.

Great piece. Haunting. I first heard it 25 years ago in a college music appreciation course.
