She supposed to be from Chicago...but to make her sound more like a bimbo, they give her a New York accent. Not the first time this has happened in American cinema or TV.
I thought this was the best part of the movie. I didn't like the movie that much; I thought it was rather predictable. And I never thought that Julie Andrews was convincing as a "man." But Leslie Ann Warren was a stand-out. I thought she should have won the Oscar that year.
when she sings.."wheeeeen theeeey saaay..I'm from Chi (shy)...It is so lusty Edith Bunker try to be sexy sounding over the top..I just crack up. Leslie Ann Warren is no slouch in this movie. As ridiculous as Norma is in this film..Leslie Ann plays her with just enough moxy..ya gotta love her..with her loud mouth and crude Chi town ways. Bravo
The role for Leslie Ann Warren was supposed to end when she was sent off on the train--but Blake Edwards liked her so much that they rewrote the script and brought her character back. It was scenes like this that did it!
@jcschmittjames Thanks for the info... I thought I knew all the miscellaneous backstory on V~V but I didn't know that. Anyone who's seen the film knows how important Leslie Ann's character was in the plot development... what a loss it would have been had it ended at the train station! And I can't even imagine the film WITHOUT this dance sequence! Major highlight.
@CityofDreadfulDelite ....interesting enough, that it told that Blake Edwards wanted this scene to be done topless but the thought of it brought Leslie to tears...and he changed it. She totally rocked this role and I completely agree that Leslie Ann Warren should have won the Oscar that year for Best Supporting Actress. It is widely regarded that Jessica Lange was awarded the statuette because she was double nominated that year.
@kindanice101 Topless? Another fantastic tidbit re: this film that I never knew! Blake had such a "boobie" fetish... lol
In any case, I'm glad they didn't go the topless route. This dance sequence could never have been improved upon by nudity as it was already perfection. That day Leslie Ann brought HER ALL to the studio, & then some. She was hale, she was hearty, her vocals were spot-on & she was lusty aplenty.
Sometimes, it's best to leave a couple of things to the imagination. ;-)
@CityofDreadfulDelite ....her role in Frances was so good ,but people knew she would lose out to Meryly Streep in Sophies Choice...that the Best Supporting award was given as a consolation.
@hollywoodkiddo We saw cinderella too, lol. We know she's singing, what Jorgie ment is its not her natural accent or voice. Leslie's main background is dance which she is great at but you can't compare her singing to Julie Andrews anymore than Julie could be expected to dance like Leslie. They are both great and we love the movie to this day so my question is: As a fellow fan why are you arguing?
Actually yes this is her real voice- she actually has a background in singing and Musical Theater- she's just in-character for this role, and did it so well, she was nominated for an Oscar! :)
@hollywoodkiddo Obviously she is singing I meant its not her usual singing voice. She is a dancer more than a singer you can't fairly compare her to Julie Andrew's voice. Why are you arguing with a fellow fan of hers? I know her nominations Its one of my fav movies and in my book she put that movie over the top.
@hollywoodkiddo I meant its not her natural singing voice. She more a dancer than singer. You can't compare her Julie Andrews fairly. I know she was nominated it one of my fav movies and I in my book she put that movie over the top.

The are both great and I love the movie to this day so my question is: As a fellow fan why are you arguing?
@Jorgiejustgrazing Oh I wasn't arguing at all and I definitely wasn't comparing
her to Julie Andrews- I just saw that someone had said it wasn't her singing voice
and I just wanted to clarify that it is her actual voice but brilliantly in-character. Julie Andrews was totally amazing in this movie as well. Great movie and a talented cast! :)

This is just brilliant. Apparently Leslie was wringing her hands after V/V wrapped, afraid her performance was too over the top...but she nailed it!
