  • i dont get how nature could become really creepy but wonderful at the same time..in other words...DAMN NATURE YOU SCARY.

  • Fascinating. This kind of animals must be studied and protected

  • Support global warming to save this squid.

  • Count Squidula

  • amazing animals.!

  • 1:07 the 1st ever to make the :D face lol

  • Kraken's long lost cousin's granddaughter

  • I never knew cephalopods could blink. Amazing video!

  • And some people think there's a God.

  • it looked scary at first then i realized how cute it was but it did look a bit computerized

  • is this video real?

  • i wanna see a real pic of it

  • Nice eyes

  • at 2:04 the squid looks like a red crazy haired baby

  • pause at 2:04... the squid is smiling :D

  • Never let a chance to blame humans go to waste..

  • @AlcoholLevel Well if it's their fault, then no, don't.

  • It didn't had to change for 300 million years, because it worked.

  • but I thought global warming was a communist-atheist money making conspiracy!

  • i love octopus more than quids.!

  • this looks like a mechanical remote controlled squid that looks like a real one since the eye looks fake to me..

  • @jimlan4 its not fake, that is a live Vampire Squid, most Cephalapods dont have eyes like that, but most of todays living cephalapods have evolved quite a bit since their prehistoric relatives, the Vampire Squid is a species that has changed very very little since those prehistoric times hence its odd features seen in very few other living cephalopods of today, the vampire squid, just like the Ceolacenth (dont think i spelled that right) which is a fish, are considered Living Fossils

  • @Lavos2007 thanks for explaining that to me. now i know the real truth.

  • @jimlan4 its not only a living fossil, its also the last surviving member of its order in the animal kingdom, at one point in the natural history of earth, there were more than 1 species of this type of animal, but this is the only one that is still alive today, if you wondered, it is actually an Octopus, those 2 yellow curly filaments you see once were common biological features in Octopi of prehistoric times, but evolution over the ages has removed that feature from todays common Octopi

  • 2:00 looks like a smiling face with a high hair!

  • looks like CGI...

  • looks like an alien

  • Vampirotoothus, I choose you!

  • looks animated

  • There are some pretty odd looking creatures down in the abyss of the ocean. This creature is ancient? So how old does that make it exactly? I just find it funny that if this creature really is ancient then that must mean it has probably been around for thousands of years, and i'm just now hearing about it, how strange.

  • i like how it blinks towards the end of the video

  • if only it was bigger...

  • absolutely beautiful

  • It's beautiful.

  • wa..its so cute.how amazing to see this little fellow..hope humans will realize the importance of their existence.

  • 1:57 looks like a giant mushroom smiling :D

  • This is a real animal, that we observed and videotaped with our remotely operated vehicle Ventana in September 2000 at a depth of 708 meters (2,323 feet). Our scientists see this animal on a regular basis.

  • @MBARIvideo show some proof?

  • @farhanking7861 You must be be kidding.

You jsut watched a video of the creature in question and you ask for proof.

  • animals and plants are dying out because of us. that's so sad. no wonder mother nature is mad.

  • At first I was like what the hell, it's obviously not animated! Then I looked up more videos on the vampire squid, and this one looks fake...

  • Daaaaaw, it can even blink! :D

    *Pets Vampire Squid

  • If you've never seen it before, then you'll of course you'll think it's just animation. Or not. Just depends on the person.

  • you can tell its animated

  • get urself glasses

  • its not, these things exist

  • I never said they don't exist :)

But I wonder how the got such good footage of the different skills and actions it preforms :) Did they teach it the tricks to preform on command? ;)

I don't doubt their existence but I do doubt the truthiness of the video.

The reflection in the eyes was overkill in my mind... Also that everything is so defined and so sharp. At half a mile under water I doubt one would get this kind of clarity regardless of how advanced the machinery is. :)

    Have a good day :)

  • @necox5

This is not cgi, it is a real animal, type it in in youtube and you will find plenty of other footage of it.

  • i think if it was computer animated they would have stated it was , but its real and these animals exsist

  • @marcsoyeah, I believe they exist no problem. And I would hope they would state if it was animated as well :/ Sadly they seem to have forgot :)

  • @qix77

its no secret that humans are the cause of global warming dumbass.

  • @filmfanatic711 You should probably look up the facts before joining the rest of the sheep.

  • @shotgunkarma

are you serious? so the reason there is a huge hole in the ozone layer is not because of HUMAN'S exhaust emitting automobiles? i can name more examples.

  • Actually the hole in the ozone has very little to do with humans, sure we made it form a little faster then it already was forming, but it was going to get there no matter what we did. Also just letting you know that cows create more greenhouse gasses then the average person, the main contributor to the enhanced greenhouse effect (global warmings real name) is industry, not our cars.

  • @MadiiManiac

To correct you, the cow emissions are less than the car emissions, seeing that exhaust is about 5x worse then cow waste

  • It's amazing to me that someone, anyone really, would be brazen enough to complain about this clips 'political agenda' because the dialogue illuminates the the very real, and continuing, threat that human activity presents to the existence of creatures such as these... and so many others. It is a sad tribute to the fact that so many of us still live, and think, in a manner that is as devoid of light, and reason, as is the depth of the ocean that this magnificent creature calls home.

  • @timeoftroubles brazen?

  • @Teeheehee093 Brazen: Marked by insolence and audacity...

  • @timeoftroubles If you aren't a vegetarian, you are a hypocrite.

  • @sniktawleahcim Ummm... What? Where's the logic in that comment?

  • @timeoftroubles You state that it is disgusting that we could allow other species to die out if it is inconvenient for us to keep them alive. Eating animals for food is killing animals, just as any side effect deaths of what we do killing those in the ocean. I'm not a vegetarian, and not trying to enforce those ideals, but to act like it is bad to let animals die for our benefit, but to continue to support eating animals, is kind of contradictory.

  • @sniktawleahcim So in other words, if I'm not against eating seafood, then I'm a hypocrite for being against polluting and over-harvesting of the Earth's Ocean's... Is that the core of your point? If then, that is your point, and I am not a vegetarian, then I should, by your account, be in favor of whole-sale pollution and give carte blanche to the engines of industry that, in effect, strip-mine the oceans without thought to the long-term repercussions... Am I correct?

  • @timeoftroubles You're a badass.

  • oh god, it's so beautiful. But if it isn't e quid species, what species is it then?

  • @dundeecake Octopus I'd imagine.... i forget the scientific name...

  • Hi,

This fascinating animal is between the squids and octopuses. The scientific name is Vampyroteuthis infernalis

  • Thank you so much. :D

  • One of my favorite cephs. Their movements are so mesmerizing and graceful. Their light shows are something else too.

  • Wow.

  • Great video, but a bit heavy handed with the human-bashing commentary toward the close. Let's have more of the fascinating hard science details and spare us your political agenda in the soundtrack please.

  • Once again, I'm glad I'm a subscriber. Great video.

  • Awesome video, very informative and good commentary, quality stuff. 5 stars :)

  • I like commentary, any suggestions?

  • fascinating specimen. really beautiful

  • That was so awe inspiring.

  • I'm so glad for these videos every time they come up.

I remember seeing this creature in a magazine but seeing it in motion is something else.

    Thanks for the video!

  • Fantastic creature!
