  • the 3rd comment here is in Polish... Because Poland is a land of the great violin players!

Stuff Smith is the killer!!! For me the esence of jazz: great deal of swing with strong flavour of blues.

  • ZAJEBISTE :)

  • JOE VENUTI

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSS Bugle Call and I answer YES!

  • Both Grappelli and Smith are great. As a violinist, i prefer Stuff because he did things with the violin that i previously thought only horn players can do. Grappelli's style is more of a classical virtuosic Bluegrass swing style. When u hear him play, u know its the violin. When Stuff plays the violin... the instrument transforms into something else. Im gonna have fun mixing elements from Stuff Smith, Grappelli, Didler Lockwood, Jean Luc Ponty, and Regina Carter together to make a new style.

  • @dsurtai1 Stuff is blacK.

  • @dsurtai1 I couldn't agree with you more.... imo Stuff was the hardest swingin cat to ever scrape on a cigar box.!.. not imprisoned by idiomatic concepts that are the ruin of most classical players. Good luck w. the mix, but throw some Eddie South in there too...

  • only one clip on youtube of Stuff Smith wow!

  • Great piano!

  • get! it! ...stuff!

  • It swings superduper in that good old Montmartre.

  • Amazing and one video of him exists on YouTube? C'mon tubers!

  • Wow~! Oh Yeah~!

  • that lick @ 1:53...crazy!

  • the stuff of legend

  • Pedersen fue sin dudas uno de los más grandes contrabajistas de la historia

  • Man, I love YouTube.

  • wow. who knew? that's amazing!

  • yu wanna hear the stuff he did with gillespie and peterson.

  • Stuff Smith was truly amazing and inspiring.

  • His playing is so intimidating. But I love it.

  • Man this kills! The audience is so subdued. I jumped out of my seat watching this.

  • This is a tutorial on jazz fiddle styles and what makes music and jazz in particular so exciting. The bests artists have their own styles! Comparing Stuff to anyone else on violin is ludicrous. Stephane, Jean-Luc, Venuti, Svend Asmussen, they are all fantastic and have very individual tastes.

  • Holy crap! This is KILLER! Thanks for putting this up!

  • stuff kills stephane on style points...either way im quitting violin today:)

  • stuff got some major stuff!!

  • yeeeeahhh!!!!!!!!

  • this is the year he died, not many violinist have even heard of him, the stuff he didi with dizzy and oscar is by the greatest stuff you'll ever hear.

  • @jaffijaffer FYI Stuff Smith died september 25 1967 as evidenced by this video, he could swing like no other. He was a true pioneer in that he was the first to use amplification on the violin.

  • Stuff Smith is one of the most underrated Jazz violinists of all time. But he was one of the most talented. This jam session is incredible.

  • you are so right, i really think he was the best of all of them. nobody swings as hard as stuff

  • Yes Lawd!!

  • @fiddlenut24 I agree at 100%!

  • @JazzMaestra Yes he was, and that he is!

  • Stuff Smith was incredible!

  • Tillykke med de 100 år i dag( i går ;-)) Far. Dejligt at have mulighed for at se og høre dig lidt engang i mellem. Love Christina

  • Thanks for uploading this rare piece of footage! Stuff Smith is the greatest!
