  • Vic, you are my hero - where is donation button?

  • @sim77100 Thanks, you're the first to ask that. If you're a finger style r I have many arrangements you can purchase if you like(all video's with annotations) greetings Vic.

  • Hi Vic, just want to say that I love your work. I'm starting to get into jazz guitar (it's a struggle sometimes) and your video's are very usefull and inspiring. Please keep them coming. I also liked your blues for Harry Muskee, a great tribute to one of the blues icons of Netherlands. Thanks and cheers.

  • @TullesP Thanks friend, who said life would be easy?, of course for those who are only consuming and taking all for granted it is but not for searchers like us,Harry was a great Blues man R.I.P. Vic.

  • You got to work out that Aierto tune Xiababa!

  • Vic, you have opened my ears. I can almost play the first 8 bars of the solo!

  • @HumblePie76 Good man, I'm glad I could have helped so many guitarists with my Video, got tremendous response to this one. lot's of success further and remember always analyze what you're playing,Vic.

  • Amazing. Thank you for all your help.

  • @Alpha7xxx Thank you, making it all your own is the discipline part, greetings Vic.

  • Thank you very much, really helpful. especially D- pentatonic over C-7, Thanks again.

  • Hi Vic, those videos are the highlights of YouTube. Keep them posting, please!;-)

    Best to you, Frank

  • Thanks a lot for these good ideas : I'm trying to figure out why you play Bb minor at 00:50. To me, Db lydian dominant = G altered = Ab melodic so I would play Db lydian dom so can you help me to find out the link between Db lydian dominant and Bb minor pentatonic ? sorry if it's a bit stupid but I'm still a beginner :) thx

  • @Jazzguts Ok I think got it : Bb minor is the 6th degree of Db but you cannot play the C note so you play pentatonic ? Am I right ? (not sure...:)

  • @sredlight You're welcome, Ok here we go Dd lydian dominant spells: Dd Eb F G Ab Bb Cb Db instead of this scale you could use Dd major pentatonic Db Eb F Ab Bb the relevant minor of this scale is Bb minor pentatonic Bb Db Eb F Ab (stil including the 4 possible altered notes compared to G7 alt) Hope this answers your question.

Bb minor penta is also found within the Ab melodic scale. Vic.

  • @Jazzguts You're absolutly right, thank you very much ! the whole vid is very helpful... I wish you could do the same for stella by starlight :) which is quite difficult for me to analyse ...

  • @sredlight Please consider the fact that I'm a professional musician in every day life, working many hours to earn my salary, so I might do some things here for free but it's time consuming and I'm not earning anything with this work, just for you to know, greetings Vic.

  • @Eddabed You're welcome hope you get something out of it.

  • posting the chords while you played over them really helps. Suscribed.

  • Very nice.

  • One of the best jazz line lessons on YouTube. Thanks!

  • @michaelcoffin Thanks for your fantastic feedback, it's so good to hear from people who don't take everything for granted, I mean what if YT would stop to excist,it's back to the Music store buying books again.Vic.

  • awesome, really, thanks !

Gives a bunchs of idea !

  • @FrankPelletier90 Thanks,I hope you have a great advantage with this Video,Vic.

  • Thank you for your generous explanations.

  • @G7flat5 Thanks, hope you get some ideas out of this,Vic.

  • where can I find the backingtrack for it?

  • @LuccaTotti My backing tracks are made in B.I.B. (band in a box) but cannot be converted to Mp3.

  • Beautiful tone and lovely playing. Thanks very much for sharing Vic. Very inspiring and educational.

  • @Babsjoseph Thank you, glad to get such inspiring feedback from you guys, greets Vic.

  • Wow! That really has opened a few windows for me. Showing the scales over the root chords was inspired. Great playing and sweet sound. Thanks.

  • i was very inspired thank you

  • @thenamesfrancisco You're welcome and great you're not taking all for granted, greetings Vic.

  • Great sound and great playing vic . I have been watching your videos for a long time and appreciate every one of them, and the hard work that it takes to get where you are on guitar. I have been playing guitar myself for over 30 years and I am also experimenting with modal concepts. great video.

    bernie

  • @portsoyman123 Thanks,I've made this Video for musicians like yourself who are aware of the fact that to unlock all the beauty one must study hard, greetings Vic.

  • wow, thanks a lot, beautiful and very instructive, a true gift from a music lover!!!!!

  • @kristorn Thanks for your kind words,Vic.

  • Great to have all the analysis of the soloing over the top, fantastic tuition vid as well as playing

  • @julianportmusic When you get the ideas down in mind and fingers you can use them in many similar situations, greets Vic.

  • Beautiful sound.

  • @lee95757 Thank you, always great to hear that not everybody is taking all for granted, all the best,Vic.

  • Great version with tasty substitutions over the changes. I did this arrangement substituting D7 to D-7 to Db7 over the 9th and 10th bar, then resolved back to C-7 for bars 11 & 12. Definitely nothing fancy at all, but it worked out OK...Cheers!

  • @dewmikester1 Thanks, many concepts are possible on such an OPEN tune,Miles and Shorter also Hancock brought this "Modal Jazz" style to a great development, the basic chords could be simple but this allows the improviser to stretch out and expand using a diversity of options, greetings Vic.

  • Hi Vic,I'm a brazilian pro guitar player.First of all ,congratulations for your job, playing and teaching.I would like to know the seymour duncan model you're using.best regards

  • @jarbasg1 Thanks,it's a seymour duncan humbucker, all the best,Vic

  • @Jazzguts Hi,Vic.I understood you can't tell me the model (if SH-1,SH101,etc).Regards.

  • @jarbasg1 I can not look into my guitar anymore where it's normally written my F-hole is closed (anti-feedbak) I wouldn't know,Vic.

  • @Jazzguts Oh yeah,Thank you very much.Regards.

  • just fyi, footprints isn't exactly a minor blues. first off, its a 24-bar form, whereas a blues is 12, and while it does go from i-7 to iv-7, there isn't really a turnaround like a 2-5 in a blues, it goes #ivø7 - VII7 - iiiø7 - VII7, which can't be equated to a 2-5-1. its close, but technically speaking, it's not a minor blues.

  • @pgabrielides Thanks for the technical-theoretic Info let's just call it Music with a capital M,lol, greets Vic.

  • @pgabrielides i agree with u that its not 100 % a minor blues but just to correct u it actually is in a 12 bar form as it is 6/4 beat ;-)

  • @TheJungleBungle

i'm pretty sure it's in 3, not 6, but it could still be a minor blues even if it was in 3, it'd just be 24 bars, so each chord would be given twice as many bars, i'm not entirely sure why i put that part in haha

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @pgabrielides Its definitely a minor blues. Your entire comment, although you where trying to sound professional, tells me that you dont know anything about music. Vic obviously knows so much more than you, dont insult him with your stupidity. Just for YOUR info a blues does NOT have to be 12 bars. 8, 16, 24, whatever. 5 bar blues if you want. And II, V, I is more Jazz than blues. If you want to comment on music, check out Justin Bieber or something.

    Btw great video, thanks Vic!

  • @LudvigBrathen okay, im not gonna have a debate with you, but first of all, in the info bar, it says minor-jazz blues, which is a very well defined progression, and the last four bars are | ii/bVI7 | V7 | i | V7 |. youre right, a blues doesnt have to be 12 bars, but it can't be 8, 16, or 5. it has to be a multiple of 12 (which this is, and my point about that was incorrect, as i said in another comment). saying you can have an 8 bar minor blues is like saying autumn leaves can be a 20 bar form.

  • Comment removed

  • @Cutler78541 This question has nothing to do with this Video and I'm sure your teacher will know an answer to your question.

  • Quick question for you Vic, when you say Bb min pentatonic over Db7(sub for G7 alt), what exactly do you mean?

  • @IAMBILLCOSBY I look at it this way over Db7 I can play Db major pentatonic or the relative minor pentatonic Bbmi (same notes) Bb Db Eb F Ab, against G7 here you'll find all the altered notes including the 7. Vic.

  • Great tone....surprised with the double humbucker at the neck. Tasty beyond tasty!

  • @reverendglenn Thanks,I changed the original Benson for this seymour-duncan which I think has more body than the original, greetings Vic.

  • Thanks so much. Now 25 years of mindless noodling can make sense....

  • @dunksnotpead OK,make sure the next 40 (or so) you'll be thinking deep what you're doing,lol,Vic.

  • vic your the best man! thank you for adding your concepts this is a bigg help.

awsome solo, i need to be able to play like this!!!!!

  • @christophergradwohl Thank you for not taking all for granted and hope you get a lot out of this one, Vic.

  • Awesome Vic! Nice playing.

  • @StandardSam1 Thanks bro hope you find some nice ideas in here for your playing,Vic.

  • Hello once again Vic.

Its your guitar shopping buddy from LOng Island.

I recieved my GB10 and it was to thin. What (If you Don't Mind) is the thickness of your GB20. as I am now returnig GB10 And would like to get a thicker body about the size of your Ax. PS is the GB 200 about the same size as your ax? I just can't seem to get any info at Ibanez web site.

Thank you for allowing me this time. OH! as always great and honest interpretation of Footprints.

    Freddyflow

  • @Freddyflow44 Hi Freddy, the GB 20 isn't made anymore ,the Ibanez factory seized the production some years ago,you might find them in some Yuppies home but you'll have to rob a bank before you can pay those prizes, you better go out and find a Guitar with a body that suits you, you physically have to feel yourself what suits you, greetings Vic.

  • @Freddyflow44 Washburn J6 ? You will have no regrets about trying one of those

  • BRAVO!!!

  • @Dvareckas Thanks Dave,all the best brother,Vic.

  • is the guitar that your are playing the same sise as the GB 10 or The GB 200. Im thinging of getting a new ax was just wondering about the size and depth of both. Needless to say I do admire yoor playing very much. Musically Yours

    Freddy gilbert

  • @Freddyflow44 Thanks Freddy, let's say this is the bigger brother of the GB10 but this GB20 is taken out of production some years ago,you might find them in some guitar stores (as a second hand) but the prices are rather high,I think the GB10 is also a good instrument, greetings Vic.

  • Vic Great solo.. LOVED that last lick and chord. ..A cm / Maj 7 with a 9th????. Very COOL !!!

  • @SIRONEDRAGON Thanks Ken glad you checked this one out, Vic.

  • @SIRONEDRAGON Vic Really COOL ideas there !!

  • Really loved this ...... Fattest wettest jazz Tone ..... what gauge strings and brand do you use?Great chops ... What brand of guitar? I got almost all of your theory, too! Nice touch putting the scale choices on the screen, also. I am in Florida and bumped into you watching Vic Juris ,,, I was astudent of his in 1975. Stephen.

  • @fbimunky Thanks interesting comment: Strings- Thomastik in Feld 010, Guitar GB20 Ibanez (taken out of production,GB10 still available) glad you got something out of my Vid, nice meeting you here, keep on playing,Vic.

  • Vic so pro man

I've been just been given this song for jazz class in high school

have just been using arpeggios, scales, and chord tones and using berklee book

I really want to improve do have any specific advice or book/site suggestions?

    Thanks

  • @azpmoksuhgf Thanks, well if you study these concepts right here and think deep about them,I mean blend them with Info you already know. You'll learn a great deal already. What I know comes from being creative with a little info then expanding from there. First go over these concepts and I have more lesson Video's,check my profile there you'll find some nice free Jazz lessons. If you have questions mail me,Vic. (Always take little bits at a time)

  • Thanks,I try using YT to make some sense, there's so much crap around and useless Stuff, friendly,Vic.

  • Even better than Shorter's ... what more can I say? I'd like to hear your version of "Adam's apple" have you already posted it? thanks and keep on delighting us. Greetings

  • @bisciu1967 Thanks that's a great compliment,I haven't posted Adam's Apple but I've tasted it and it was kind of bitter,cheers Vic.

  • That is "the" jazz guitar tone. Simply beautiful and elegant. Great playing.

  • @fingerboy18 thanks, glad it sounds good to your ears, maybe you also get something out of these concepts, cheers Vic.

  • You're welcome. And I do, I get great pleasure out of your playing. I am a bass player but who says I can't enjoy some guitar, eh? :)

  • @fingerboy18 You're right, Music is one great thing, wheater you play bass or guitar, theory is the same and if necessary I can play a nice walking bass down the road, swinging hard.cheers Amigo.

  • Nice playing, I like your tone!

  • Thank Nick hope you get something out these concepts,Vic.

  • Great job. Where did you get the backing track? If you created it do you have a copy available? Thanks!

  • @polishcomedy I recommend you to invest in (new version) of B.I.B. (band in a box) it's user friendly and you can create your own backing tracks, cheers Vic.

  • Thanks!

Great ideas for getting me out of playing my usual boring dorian stuff. love the chord you finish on!

  • arp1978, thanks to make progress one has to force himself in other ground, greets Vic.

  • Very nicely done. Great sound. Happy Holidays! drmike

  • Thanks Mike same to you ,all the best,Vic.

  • Very useful Man!!! Which guitar did you use? Have You recorded with a microphone in front of an Ampli? If yes, what amp did you use? Best Regards

  • HI spleen, 1. guitar: GB20 Ibanez 2. No mike, straight into 4 channel mixer 3. No Amp (straight into mixer with eq,pan and volume settings) X'mas greetings Vic.

  • Thank you so much VIC...I have another and last questions: If thise is a GB20, have you change the PickUp at neck? Marry Xmas you too!!!

  • Hi Spleen,I changed the original for a Seymour Duncan Humbucker, greets Vic.

  • I learned a lot of things from you, thank you sir, nice work!

  • Thanks meditatio1, glad you learned,that's what we're all here for,greets Vic.

    grettings!

    Dallton S

  • Thanks dallton2007,you're a very talented player with great fluid technique your 500Miles was very impressive, great fusion man, greetings Vic.

  • Thanks guitardork, well certainly once the grey cells start working they'll have no time to grow old, lol, greets Vic.

  • Beautifully played. Also impressive technically. I hope that continuing to learn these complex concepts will delay onset of senility! (I guess that reveals my age group....)

  • Thanks jfunk.. I think this is making good (educative) use of atonations,be my guest and try them out.Vic.

  • Beautiful,i am going to try those concepts out thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and ideas.

  • Good work! Your comments on your improvisation seem very helpful, I'll try some of your ideas.

  • Good Idea Jazzman, let me know how they are workin for you, greets Vic.

  • very smooth and delicious playing and guitar sound

    best wishes

    Robert

  • Thanks Robert, that counter point melody you did with Sabine was very nice, thanks for checking me out, greets Vic.

  • this is sweet, i wouldve like to see you play both voices in the closer - its basically just 4ths (i think theres a tritone and a third in there smwhere), but totally playable and a good way to add a little suspense.. LOVE THE SOLO ! -jms

  • Thanks sangreality, the tritone is Db7 instead of G7 which gives an altered sound, this is lot's of work so I won't be doing this attenuation thing all the time, and it's good for people to figure out things by themselves, keeps the motivation going, greets Vic.

  • Beautiful tone, imho!

    James

  • Thanks James, very welcome, the tone can be very different depending on my mood, check out my newest, "Do it again" tell me what you think, greets Vic.

  • Thanks Vic, This went well at the weekend. I may have played it safe a little but I will keep trying some ideas until i'm comfortable

  • Yes Westy,play them till they're internalized then they're truly yours,greets Vic.

  • Hey Vic- this was great. I appreciate the tags showing what mode you are playing over the changes. I am a guy who has been "learning" to play jazz for 30 years, and this was more useful than many of the lessons I have had in that time. I am truly enjoying your playing. It is inspiring. Gotta go play now

  • That's the Spirit peleka, practice and try to incorporate new ideas into your playing, you'll find a way how to do that, gladly done, greets Vic.

  • Hello Vic! I'm a piano player with my own jazz trio and I have to tell you, I absolutely LOVE your playing and appreciate your hard work and generosity in putting this stuff out there. I came across you while searching out Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" and can't get enough. Fabulous soloing! Intelligent and tasteful. I'm learning a lot and am happy to join your site and pay for these kinds of priceless lessons!! All the best to you, my friend.

    Dennis

    Fresh Spin Piano Jazz Trio

  • Thanks Dennis,I'm very glad all my work is falling in good earth and I'm very content with your comment. All I've offered in Free -Spirit is for you. Hope you benefit from it,I've enjoyed doing it. In a while my webSite will contain lessons in discussing various Improvising -concepts I've developed through the years, there not on line yet but we're working hard at it,so re-visit my Site now and then to check if they're there, check the right Ifo bar for my Site, greetings Vic.

  • Your generosity in posting this is deeply appreciated; Thank You! The pop-up analysis is absolutely priceless. To be able to see the theory that you are applying AND be able to HEAR IT in the context of the tune simultaneously is an inspired use of this medium! There are now many hours of the best and happiest kind of study ahead for me. That you give a gift like this to people that you do not even know shows you to be a truly remarkable man. Deep respect and gratitude to you sir!!

  • Thanks rumblehud, great that people like you show their sincere appreciation. I unfortunately often see the contrary, that many things given in a "free Spirit" are taken for granted without a single remark, like people wanting my personal finger-style arrangements(scored in guitarpro-5) but not willing to pay a cent for all my extra work, this makes me think bout a certain mentality that's common under Tubers at the moment, for me not very motivating, greetings Vic.

  • Thanks! Been asked to play this at the weekend FOR THE FIRST TIME!! Got some ideas now Phew!!

  • Hi Westy.. don't forget to take the time to internalize, it's not about pressing a knob... greets Vic.

  • sir. YOU ROCK.

thanks so much for all this.

Blues man trying to break away from minor pent!!

    WHAT A LOVELY Guitar!

  • Hi Blueshero79,well this is a nice opportunity to try out some new fresh ideas, greets Vic.

  • Hi Vic, Sorry for my late comment but as always good execution, beautiful and rich sound and great improvisation a real enjoyable piece of music to listen to. Also real sleek those little tabs showing the chords your improvising on real informative. Keep up man and until soon. 5* what ells can it be, only more! Greets, John (Willemstad)

  • Those Tabs (annotations) are a nice way to add some useful info to the tune, here an analyzing of my guitar solo,I got some enthusiastic reactions, but it's lot's work so I'll only be doing it once and while, (and gotta keep some Stuff for our Site as well,Lol).Vic.

  • Compadre !!, beautiful sound and great solo ! Are you playing through an amp or is this straight in 'the box' recording ? !! greetz, Arthur Rombouts.

  • Thanks Arthur for checking me out Amigo, my guitar signal is running straight through a small "Note-pad"(Spirit) mixer which is stereo mixed with the backing track signal, from there to the audio-in port of my Mac. see you soon, cheers Vic.

  • MAESTROOOOOOO..........

    un abrazo vic.
