i thought the power from the turbo comes from the exaughst(bad spelling) and compresses the air inside to create power and how does that make the car more fuel consuming?

A turbo gains its power from the exhaust. a turbine inside the the turbo is spun as the exhaust fumes are pushed passed it. at the other end of that turbine is another turbine which forcefully pushes increased amounts of air into the engine and therefore increases the amount of power and also increases fuel economy. The catch is the engine has to be built strong enough to accept the increased amount of air when the piston compresses or else it could crack the head.

Your description of turbo power is mostly correct however, fuel economy is not increased. The consumption of fuel increases a small amount as well. The fuel maps for a stock car would not support the increased air flow without giving a bit more fuel otherwise the mixture would be off and the hp would count for naught.

True true. I was so caught up in my description I forgot to mention that the increased fuel economy requires the engine and and other parts to be built to handle the increased air mixture. Well atleast thats the theory that a ford engineer tried to explain to me about the turbo they stuck in the Ford Taurus SHO. But I don't know if thats a unique case. I'm afraid I don't know enough about the SHO to say one way or the other. Thanks for the correction btw.
