Just my own personal take on SE: "Onion Rings" seeing you exchange rings makes me cry - "Feet filled w/glue" you'll be tied down with one person now - the poet in "Auntie Mame" was a lazy poser and a "sponge" - "calls saliva love" you'll be sorry, it won't last - "Altar life" marriage vows at the altar - "superseded only from above" - the vows aren't related to anything in the real world, like my love. (Not that I take any of this as THE ONE TRUE interpretation.)
You cause the kids of Elmer Fudd To feed the farmer whose Cadaver's filled with onion rings And feet are filled with glue Now sinister exaggerator What's your claim to fame? Is still your favorite Ferlingetti Found in Auntie Maim? Your alter life is superceded Only from above Your heart is like a silken sponge That calls saliva love BEST....TEXT..........EVER!
@xxxlxtThe Residents CDs are very rare. They're not distributed on a mass-market basis like other CDs. Plus, the rights of The Residents recordings are somewhat still up in the air (mostly because of an ongoing feud between the
Cryptic Corporation and the acquirers of the Original Ralph Records (These issues have yet to resolved.)
You can definitely hear some similarities with King Crimson in this song; funny that they both started in '69. That might also explain why the Primus cover sounds even more like a Crimson song, considering how big a fan Claypool is of both bands.
I love this song....it is SOOOO creepy...some one told me that day that they like Sonic Youth because they were avant-guard I love Sonic youth but the Residents is my idea of avant-guard...Sonic youth is maybe avant-punk...the Residents have no classification
I remember reading that The Residents follow the Theory of Obscurity, which meant, the only way to achieve pure art is to throw out the idea of the outside world, and think of no consequence that the world beyond your work might have on it.
So....I guess The Residents could be classified as Obscurity?
Well, rumors abound on that. What I read was that the Theory of Obscurity was founded by N. Senada and The Residents tested this theory on an album which would later be known as "Not Available."
But, rumors suggest that N. Senada is purely fictional, so, it is possible that The Residents created that theory. Just not confirmed.
Sonic Youth are the pioneers of the no-wave punk movement, which follows no specific tunings, time signatures, or boundaries in general. Most people would classify no-wave as pure noise, but most people know nothing about music. I would say The Residents, however, really don't have a specific genre. They could be called progressive I suppose, if one had to pick a genre for them.
sonic youth might have been the ones who made no-wave popular if it was ever that at all but their are plenty of band and artist that had this kind of mindset before them Pere Ubu, DNA, Faust to name a few
@yourmom416 Sonic Youth appeared well after the No-Wave movement, I make not attempt to pass judgement on their music. But even the Eno album No New York was released in 1978 three years before Sonic Youth even formed.
@osocali, I would agree. The Residents are my favorite band and songs like this give me goosebumps, even after hearing it a dozen times. Avant-garde is one of those umbrella terms that doesn't refer to a specific type of music, but it's the only label that these weirdos can possibly fit under.
@osocali sonic youth is an alt rock band no way are they avant-garde. if there's any modernish avant garde stuff it would be the experimental stuff of Mike Patton

I like it that the drums are on the left channel and other noises are on the right.

The Residents are the prophets of the DARK UNDERBELLY of North American culture. They are HUGE!

I've adored this song for decades. It's the single most reason I got a Residents tattoo. Dana Hatch once told me that he threw up to this song.

the residents are probally the most capable of creating a "sonic soundscape" they can make you feel emotions like fear with their music...

Primus was heavily influenced by the Residents. Primus would not be who they are without the Residents.

@Skittlesofthecozmos That's very true. They also owe a lot to King Crimson as well.

Except, maybe, that...it's just art.

Mike Patton is an alt rock artists too.
Sonic Youth are more experimental because of their no wave roots; they have a deconstructive approach to rock.
