  • I'm also curious to read any new biography of Toole, but I'd rather not see Robert Gottleib damned any more than he has been already. Confederacy might have been a hit in the 1970s, after Walker Percy got behind the project, but that's no guarantee it would have sold so well in the mid-1960s, when Gottleib rejected Toole's rewrite.   • You look a little like John Kennedy Toole. Ignatius Rising was a great biography--I look forward to yours and hope it's even better. I suppose Toole fits the stereotype of the tortured gay writer but he's still interesting in his own right, and his mother was interesting as well. I still think Confederacy is one of the funniest books I have ever read. It's strange, isn't it, that someone who had such a humorous view of life would take his own life. Damn that Robert Gottlieb!
