  • We will never know unless someone else does a tell all.Friends do not bust each other out.

  • I was glad to see Marshall Grant with him.He had not played with him in 29 yrs.

  • @TheChief1313 Actually, it was more like 17 years. Grant played for Cash (and served as road manager) from 1955 until 1980, when Cash sent Grant a letter informing him that he was terminated. Grant immediately sued on several grounds, including an equal partnership agreement between Cash, Luther Perkins and himself; and charges of embezzlement of retirement funds by Cash. Perkins' family also sued Cash at the same time.

Cash's defense was hopeless, and he ended up settling all claims.

  • @moproducer We are both wrong it was 19 yrs.The last show according to Marshall himself was in texas early 1980.All I know is the old friends made up.

  • @TheChief1313 Yeah, JC and Grant both wrote about making up when Cash was in the hospital and thought he was dying. June Carter called Grant, who was in Nashville, and persuaded him to see JC. Grant was a pallbearer at JC's funeral.

I mistakenly had this pegged at 1997, which is how I got 17 years. Big deal for both of us. The 1980 story was that JC was doing dope & having an affair with Jan Howard on tour. Grant stepped in, June got physically sick, and JC fired Grant and all the Carters.

  • @moproducer I am unsure about the Jan Howard thing.Marshall seemed to think a bandmember was hooking up with Jan Howard. Not John.

  • @TheChief1313 Grant was cryptic about it. He certainly didn't point any fingers. When the press hit JC, all he said was "Jan wouldn't do that to June". No denial himself. John Carter is pretty blatant about JC's heavy philandering, and even says that June & JC separated for a while and considered a divorce.

It's interesting that Jan Howard was never part of the JC show again. And Grant, who had been JC's conscience-on-the-shoulder for years, was finally broomed.

  • @moproducer I have heard alot of this.they are to vague for me to say they are fact.

  • He was a lot younger here than he looks. At age 67, Cash was thoroughly physically shot.

He'd had bypass surgery, removal of several internal organs, a restructuring of his digestive system, breaking & resetting of his jaw, diagnoses of diabetes, neuropathy, congestive heart failure and acute chronic indigestion, the residual effects of having needed drug rehab 4 times and 30 years of heavy chainsmoking, and the physical abuse he gave his body in his youth. He was also legally blind.

  • @moproducer you pretty much summed up everything, but he also broke his nose once when he crashed into a tree with his car. If you look at some older pictures of Cash you'll see that his nose have a little hump and is slightly curved. I don't know if this happened when he broke his nose or if he had a naturally crooked nose since his youth.

  • @Spyflugan91 Right; his early Sun Records promo pix show a clean face and straight nose. His scar on his cheek came from a surgical procedure while in the Air Force in Germany (Cash recalled that the doctor was drunk).

The small scars on his forehead and temples came from several episodes with a Jeep, in the desert in So. Cal. Cash would aim the Jeep into the desert, floor the accelerator, and stand up as long as he could with his eyes closed. He usually ended up crashed into a cactus.

  • Even Though he was in bad shape and looked awful, he sounded good. I was suprised when he roared unexpectedly in the midle of the song. Hell, I'll be happy if I'm alive at that age.

  • Grande cantor grande homem
