Just for all those movie haters out there, Douglas Adams actually wrote the script for it himself before he died, I've seen it, and it's pretty much exactly the same as the movie. So, saying you hate the movie, is saying hate the script that Douglas Adams wrote himself. Give the movie a little bit more appreciation! Although I do live the rest, the books, tv show etc. And, this song's good too!
@Kaoskadosk Ah, but one thing to remember, every version was different. Adams was proud of that, the radioplay was different that the book, which was different than the TV show, and by extension the movie.
@SciFiFangirlsFTW its written in the mood of marvin. Marvin the parnoid android. As he himself says he is a bored a gloomy robot... therefore, Sad sounding
its ironic that a throw away joke record from 1981 sung by a paranoid depressive is still a million times better than any rap hip hop or so called r n b music polution thats played endlessly on moronic radio stations by braindead dj's today.
I’m surprised no one mentioned Kimi Wong-O'Brien ?? She did the female voice in this song (that drives me wild :) ) she also starred in the Rocky Horror picture show
I first heard this on the radio and had it recorded on a dusty old cassette...which I lost...then forgot about. Then the movie comes out and everything's WRONG. Then I start watching the old tv show on YT and lookin up the old radio programmes. Then I remembered there was this song... Not as good as I remember actually...
@uberari No no... The Movie is wrong. I mean just look at Zaphod. That's not Zaphod Bebblebrox in that movie. And Mos Def is NOT Ford Prefect. Arthur was acceptable and I love me some Zoe as Trillian. But, C'mon Douglas is spinning in his grave.
@jarrod40k douglas casted everyone. he casted everyone he thought deserved the role. mos def was as he was supposed to be in that movie. weird and subtle.and zaphod beeblebrox was almost fucking exact because the guy plays it off so well.
Douglas died 2001, the movie was made 2005. How the hell would he be able to cast anyone when he only was there for the beginning of the screenplay? He might have had some ideas when they did began doing the screenplay, but I assure you he wasn't there for the actual casting. Get your facts straight.
@jarrod40k The movie is not wrong. the movie is not right.. same with the show. Many people read the books and then saw the show and thought "that is what the characters are supposed to be like." but for a new generation or readers like myself (I'm 13) who saw the movie first that is how the characters are supposed to be. Since it is a book with no illustrations and 2 completely different adaptions (when it comes to characters) the way they look is anyone's opinion.
@jarrod40k I agree. I amsolutely hated movie!Zaphod, movie!Ford, and movie!Marvin, but I loved movie!Arthur. It's Martin Freeman! John Watson! WOOHOO!!
this song actually makes me sad because he finds someone who actually wants to be with him and it could be dead for all he knows. THIS IS A GREAT SONG! i hope they make a movie or book or something where marvin tries to look for her......someday........please
reminds me of listening to this song when i was a kid and how i swore i'd never be alone. now twenty years later i sit and listen to it alone in front of this plastic box.
Okay, that part in the middle, where she gives her reason for the song? Can anyone understand what she's saying? I can only get a few bits, then it's unintelligible.
@ArbiterofChaos "I tried to contact Marvin. I don't know why, but he never replied. Perhaps one day, he'll answer. 'Til then, I guess, I'll keep on trying..."
"Marvin I Love You" is available on the Dr Demento CD "The Best of Dr Demento.
According to Wikipedia, it was the B-Side of a song called "Reasons to be Miserable," which I've never heard. There was also another single, "Marvin/Metal Man."

Adams himself helped with the movie. The movie Marvin is just as depressed (and therefore just as good) as the radio, TV, and book Marvins.
Redward652 2 years ago
That's something that always confused me. People keep saying that Adams helped with the movie, but the thing is that he died in 2001 and the production year of the movie was 2005. Of course he might have accepted the manuscript or something of that sort, but the majority of the production, and therefor the majority of the decisions, took place after his death. What am I missing here?

He helped write the screenplay itself, which was written in 2000. Movies can take up to half a decade to make, and this one did.
Alot of the new jokes in the movie he actually wrote, so it's all still his material, just in a new shiny box.

This is NOT what Marvin is supposed to look like. The movie was CRAP--a complete travesty against the masterpiece that was HHGTTG. Gah. Blech. Bleah.
The song is great, makes me feel sorry for the real Marvin.
Anyone who thinks the movie was anything close to worthy of Adams' legacy is a depressingly stupid machine.
