I'm 18, I love rap, hip hop, rock, country, pop... anything. But nothing but will ever come close to classics like these. So smooth, classy, relaxing, sexy, sad, happy and beautiful... all at the same time. No matter what age, what time period or what mood, this song will always be untouchable
I think this was right after his marital break-up with Ms Ava Gardner....he sounds like a hurting unit bless him... brings back memories of a better time ....
Nobody, Nat King Cole came close, but NOBODY could touch Sinatra in being able to SING an emotion. The phrasing, the tone. Anybody who has thought about a lover in the wee small hours breaks down to tears when they listen to this. Only Sinatra could convey that emotion in his voice. Never will happen again.
I'm a very old man, much older than any of you would believe. I will say this about my age: I have been listening to this song every night before I sleep since its release on this album. Beautiful.
great song. sinatra paid a catholic priest to accompany him everywhere he went. the funny part was that frank wasn't a catholic. the priest was there just in case he needed to be saved and was in an emergency.
Music will never be this classy again, i wish more people appreciated it, Nothing puts me a ease like the oldies, Frank and Dean knew what they were doing,
it's 0240 and i'm thinkin of him and how i love him so much and he loves me so much but we can't be together right now...i know in the wee hours of the morning we are thinking of each other, still loving each other and missing each other..Frank is his favorite and he would tell me if i ever feel lonely to listen to this song...I love you and wish we could be together!
I`m sure their are some classical sobs who think this is trash. Just because you cant relate to a particular kind of music doesnt make it trash. I happen to love this have all Sinatras albums. I also have all of Slayers albums too. Life has many emotions and sounds in its soundtrack.
@astronautagogo dude, you can't knock a musician for covering an amazing song. Sure this is Frank's song, but who are you to say that Frank and Frank only is allowed to sing it? I'm pretty sure Frank Sinatra would be pretty happy that popular musicians enjoyed and played his music.
@Kalerabelle Actually, i understand it, and I've listened to it, and it all sounds so bad. All people do is sing about drugs, violence, and sex. I like this because it is musically talented (meaning they can't alter his voice, or create some crappy autotuned beat) and Frank Sinatra's music actually has meaning to it.
@SOAmessi This is what I mean by "not listening to it". It sounds like you have listened to a small sample of top 40 music and formed an opinion on all modern music based on it. Most modern music is about the same complex yet eternally human themes that older music is about; love, relationships, loss, connection, family. Have you ever listened to Regina Spektor, Mumford & Sons, Johnny Flyn, Deb Talan, Cat power?
just one of the best albums ever. i do get so sick of old and young narrow minded farts always harping on about modern music being trash, well yeah what you are hearing in the mainstream is trash, but music will make a resurgence. but for god sake its your fault you twats, its your fault that the eighties and late seventies became such a corporate landscape and that is why music died. you all voted for reagan and thatcher and its your fault music got handicapped by digital sounds and commercials
this = 100,000 views justin bieber - baby = 600,000,000 views what is wrong with the world, barely anyone has an appreciation for beautiful music any more....
I was having a bad night and this song came on the radio. I listened to it and began to cry. I loved the song but it made me go into tears and i didnt know why. After i listened to it on youtube about ten time i felt happy. Now whenever im down i just listen to this. It always cheers me up!
FRANK SINATRA! This is one of Frank's most tender love songs, in which he laments the loss of love! Frank sang ballads about love found, love sought after, unrequited live, and love lost! The song here is one of my all time favorites! Frank recorded it in1956, at the height of his vocal prowess!
Frank had such an incredible voice, today all voices are put through machines for music. The days of real music and an act able to sing live are long gone. Frank you are sorely missed.
FRANK SINATRA! This song, from the album of the same name, is beautiful! Frank sang often about unrequited (i.e. unreturned) love and love lost in some of his more melancholy ballads! "Only the Lonely" is another album in this Sinatra genre! But Frank could celebrate love found and life in general!!
Just realize he also sang: "That's Life," "Young at Heart," and "Fly Me To The Moon." Frank was without any doubt the greatest singer of the twentieth century!
Sinatra's career was down but not quite out. It was his marriage to Ava Gardner that was part of it. Almost simultaneously he made From Here To Eternity, and was under new contract with Capitol, and this album was one of the results. You can hear some of the pain he was going thru with the break up of his marriage in his voice, making his take of the song all the more moving.
Followed my dad's footsteps into Sinatra..listened to the 78's as a kid and carried on with the cd's after my dad passed away in 1981..god bless ya Frank..
FRANK SINATRA: My advice to all those who lament the "sad state" of today's music:
1) Listen to a great radio station that plays "The Great American Songbook."
2) Eliminate the "noise" and low level performers that the media characterizes as good "music" and today's "stars." Most of them are not in the genre of Sinatra/Damone/Manilow/Streisand/Elvis.
3) Search YouTube for the above names and you will find hundreds of great videos to watch. This works for me! Give it a try guys!
A highly over looked album whether this is the King of NY or not, this album would rate perhaps as the first of my all time favourite albums and singers. About 12 years ago when I bought the album, I would play the it over and over, with no TV, at high volume, though not too high to annoy the neighbours. Still this album will be a friend in the loneliest moments. And you don't have to live in NY to be lonely. Not much has changed. This is life with all its knockbacks and hard knocks.
FRANK SINATRA! GREATEST SINGER OF TWENTIETH CENTURY! Hello Fiends, As a Sinatra Fan for over 50 years I can say without any doubt that this song, "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning" is one of his top vocals! Other great songs suggested are: "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry," "My Way," and "Let Me Try Again" -which is beautiful and one of my all time favorites!
I just never get tired of listening to Frank Sinatra! I'm a 13 year old girl, and I actually love rock and folk, but I also love big giants like Frank, Ella, Louis, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Dean Martin <3 Everyone should listen to this..it's beautiful!

Fifty years have passed and I survived! But I never lost my love of Frank Sinatra! His ballads heal, soothe, and let you feel that he truly understands everything about love found, and love lost!

in 15 and i really wish that people my age had the same appreciation for this song as i do. this song so soooo enchanting and beautiful. songs just arent like this anymore and its really sad :/
@funsizedgirl16 Wish more people your age had such sensitivity. Songs like this reflect a different culture that has been utterly replaced by a harsher, more selfish one, where women dress and behave more and more like men. I grew up in the 1970s, when there were still remnants of the old culture, befor ethe 1980s ushered in the new age of political correctness.
@funsizedgirl16 I'm also 15 and I've been listening to Sinatra for awhile ( a few years) and i completely agree with you. it would be awesome if more people our age respected big band and 40-early 60's in general. : /
@strokesfan54 I listen to Hard Rock and Metal, and believe it or not, I like to listen to swing and jazz. At 15, I listened to stuff like New Found Glory and Third Eye Blind because thats what my friends played and that was the music that was being exposed to me at the time. I mean, how cool would you look if you busted out Nat King Cole at a party? Not very.
This album is a brilliant listen on a cold, rainy night in the dark. Just put in on, kick back, and listen, no distractions, just feel that beautiful melancholy spirit wash over you.
im only 14 and i just love music like this. i also like older music like the ink spots, glenn miller, bobby darin and stuff like that from the 30s 40s. :))
I've always loved the cover of this album. It's nighttime, the time is pensive, the streets are narrow and are flanked by big buildings. The lamps are lit and you can probably hear the sound of your own footsteps on the sidewalk. The silence of the empty streets give ample time to think and to reflect on just about everything under the stars. I wish I had lived during the 1950's and come across a street like this one.
@shysterlicious I totally agree. Not to mention how Frank Sinatra had such a nice wardrobe. That's how better is was back then with these artists, they knew how to dress well. I like to follow the styles of men's wear from guys like Sinatra.
I work as an English teacher here in Taiwan and the climate here does not even allow me to wear a suit and tie. But I have 4 tailored suits here with me, all made of kashmere.
@shysterlicious I did live during the 1950s and clearly remember staring at this album and thinking the same thing...the desolation and loneliness of the street scene says it all. And then you hear the song and you cannot believe how deep sadness goes...
A major cultural touchstone... perhaps the first acknowledgment in our culture that the girl COULD make the call...
According to Pete Hamill, Sinatra started his career singing to women, sustained his career, singing to, and on behalf of, men... I do believe that this is the title cut of the LP where that started.
Really??? How can people HATE this? This is FAR better than that Bieber and Rihanna crap. THIS IS MUSIC, kids.

At 15, I listened to stuff like New Found Glory and Third Eye Blind because thats what my friends played and that was the music that was being exposed to me at the time. I mean, how cool would you look if you busted out Nat King Cole at a party? Not very.

The whole album is sheer genius with The Nelson Riddell Orchestra. Frank Sinatra's voice will never be forgotten.
It truly is a lonely at the bar on a rainy night album.

This album is a brilliant listen on a cold, rainy night in the dark. Just put in on, kick back, and listen, no distractions, just feel that beautiful melancholy spirit wash over you.

What a song... His voice touches me deeply. That's real music. Doesn't matter if this was long before I was born. Just wonderful.

@shysterlicious Theres plenty streets like that in Hoboken NJ or Soho. Alot of brick old school roads.

@shysterlicious I did live during the 1950s and clearly remember staring at this album and thinking the same thing...the desolation and loneliness of the street scene says it all. And then you hear the song and you cannot believe how deep sadness goes...

I grew up listening to this album. It was one of my dad's favorites. This was when Sinatra still had a voice. Really nice.

I'm sorry. You are probably asking where you can find it:
Go to tower.com, type Frank Sinatra in Search, scroll down about mid-page, and you will see the album: cd#1998-05-26...$11.94.
Enjoy!

It is an album recorded around 1955, title, IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS OF THE MORNING, Frank Sinatra.
555kappock 1 year ago
Probably the very best album Sinatra ever recorded...even better than Only the Lonely.

Is it an album? I can't find online or on amazon. Where do I look?

"...wishing she would call..."
A major cultural touchstone... perhaps the first acknowledgment in our culture that the girl COULD make the call...
According to Pete Hamill, Sinatra started his career singing to women, sustained his career, singing to, and on behalf of, men... I do believe that this is the title cut of the LP where that started.
