As a young Marine I layed in my hootch smoked a number and wondered how the hell I got here. This song made me confused weather I made the right choice. Now I'm glad of my decision but 40 years ago ?
another one I love .the draft sucks always did.The Viet Nam vets got screwed over so bad. These kids today are going to get screwed over too,it`s too bad.
Nothing so tore this nation apart, from 1965 to 1973, as the Viet nam war, and the draft. It divided families, for decades when a lad decided to split to Canada, to this day.Remember one of my uncles threating to hunt me down if I done so.,and bring me before the law.
where are the protest songs today when we are in so many countries we should`nt be?They now control ALL the medias so there is no resistance nowadays. The internet is the only resource we have left to exposed the evil of war!
stepnwolf were the most outspoken in there stick it to the man message of intolerence of the tyrany that was taking us off to a war that was sending young americans home in body bags. The draft resisters were the ones who stood up to the monster that were using a system that had a place in the war against hitler and were using it in a police action to protect south vietnam from north vietnam in a revolution.it aint over with either how many of you had to register for a draft that dont exsist?
Great song, still very valid. I have to say, though, I recently found the original double LP Steppenwolf Live album, and I think they did a better job on this song live than in the studio version.
It seems like in particular Monster and At Your Birthday Party upwell with lyrics of revolutionism and political discharge...Kay & Co. kept us both enlightened and empowered...
This song is as relevant today as it was during the Vietnam War, because of the war in Afganistan and the war that recently ended in Iraq. Some Congresspeople are discussing reinstatement of conscription (drafting into military service) of young men and women as a way to strengthen the US military forces.
I remember this album when I was four years old, back in '69. My older brothers and sisters would take it up into their rooms and blast, when my dad wasn't around. It laid around in my Ma's living room until the the mid '80s(!?!) when I saved enough money to purchase a stereo of my own. I played it when she was ironing, and said something like "I like the beat of that record, Chris." She was fifty at the time...
The Whole "Monster "album is a Piece of art ..Historic /truth/ Rock spirit /musician's dedicated and able ..Can someone Post "WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF"..... the Last Cut -IF MEMORY SERVES my well, almost got Drafted....,
@Zzsmile I'm an old man, But I remember the days of Steppenwolf very well....And they never got it wrong yet far as I'm concerned....Very revelant, even today
@Zzsmile 'cause you just like classic rock and roll.... us old dudes grew up on this music..... we knew then which is what's going on now.... Steppinwolf calls it the monster... I'm radical to this day.. the monsters destiny is destruction.. The same thing happened in the days of Noah... and it's going on now... What's the answer??? Jesus is the answer Follow Him.. and the monster will not consume you...
another underrated guitar man

@gorickard319582010 Yeah it is easy for them to say. It is not like their children will have to serve.
