if you're mad that you can't play like this, then there's one thing you should do. Analyze his alternate picking technique and left arm. That's what I do and it really helps me play a lot better.

He is good, but you know why Vai is better? Because Vai can actually act at the same time while JP just sits there. Vai will be all over his guitar with his eyes rolled back in his head while playing with his hair at the same time and never miss a note. Jimi also did some crazy stuff, and they still made it look easy.  I say it takes more talent to do whatever, while still play insane riffs at the same time then being robotic. I don't play that way though.... makes me look stupid.

@BillyJimmyBobbyTimmy Perhaps you're right.... Tender Surrender isn't that easy though, and Steve had at least sloppy seconds with that guitar by the time he was done. Playing at that level, and putting an act behind it does take more talent and confidence with the guitar. Either way those guys are far beyond then your everyday guitar player. When it comes to technicality, I think Via is a little more versatile, but there is no way that I could take anything away from John.

I don't want to interrupt you conversation but I think there's more things involved in this when it comes to JPs performances. I'd like to point out that a lot of JPs solos is actually technically much harder to play than Vai's but Vai's can be harder on a more emotional level and then I'd like to point out that I think that you doesn't have to move around like a clown and making faces like you just came to play emotional, It's all in the fingers.

@dodel1 I have to disagree here, I think it's a great solo for what it is, and really fits the context of the song. Not everything has to be melodic and emotional. This one is a very chaotic solo, but I think that it has a good structure and builds up to a nice climax at 0:25 and again at 0:50. I understand that some poeple might not enjoy it, but it's certainly not utter wank.

The solo sounds like a technical exercise. The human brain can't even process notes going that fast.

I think that "The Best Of Times" is a great Petrucci song/solo that has a lot of fast melodic parts, this is just poop though.

@dodel1 I respect your opinion but I still disagree. The Best Of Times solo is a great melodic one, and so are Another Day, Peruvian Skies, Octavarium etc. Hell, even Stream Of Consciousness has a nice melodic solo later in the song (around 9:30).

But a slow emotional solo would feel out of place here. The song demands a chaotic and explosive solo, and this one succeeds at that imo. It does have a structure, unlike the Panic Attack solo, which sounds indeed like a technical exercise.

I think the most impressive part of the solo is not just the immense speed, but that he maintains musical phrasing and expression. Instead of playing a lot of notes quickly, he plays a lot of music quickly, which is why he's one of my favourite guitarists.
