Anyone have any Steve Jordan, Marcus Miller combination performances...? Also this song set it off for me... I didn't know it at the time...I really didn't know any lead bass performers ...when I heard this...!
@nexusvision Yeah Dude I know what you mean! Rhythm Deep was the name of Omars Album. Also Narada Michael Walden was another one who sang and produced on his albums and his drumming is ferocious! And don't forget Stanley Clark who also did alot of Bass dominated albums! I'm a drummer but I'm a big fan of Bass players. They inspire me as much as drummers! Marcus miller is one of my favorites!
@nexusvision actually that's his second album as a solo artist. His first album has the remake of "lovin you is such an easy thing to do" by Roberta Flack. I believe it came out in 1984 or 85. Besides the bass parts he also sang lead vocals and played most of the instruments on that album!
@ddrums001 I think Omar Hakim did the same thing at the time, singing and playing drums. The thing at the time was to crossover into Pop music with a song. "Man" has the music industry changed. I had never heard bass applied in a dominant and lead role. (yes I know there were others, but marcus was my access way into hearing that...) Billy Cobham had drum dominant songs... So hearing the bass sing as lead..singer and background vocals....so inspiring!! Steve Jordan drums Pick hits...
This was the first marcus miller song as an solo artist, I heard back in the 80's. I created a tribute to it with MS sound recorder on This day...for hearing again! I have to thank marcus for his inspiration on bass guitar! and remember bass bass and bass! I looped the hook from this song live, and then played on top of the hook!
My 1st introduction to Marcus was SNL and a song called "Wake Me When It's Over". No bass gtr on it . Crazy right. Prince isn't the only one that can play ev'thang. He's my man too. A good bass player friend of mine introduced me to MM music in Detroit years ago where I'm bred. Notice how warner bros. had Graham, Bootsy, Marcus, Funkadelic, Roger and Prince too. Cornered the market on the funk. MM, one foot in the jazz, the other one in the funk. GOD bless you 4 this post.
i became a fan back in the days when heard this song-i played the drums with this song on the background-i was 9 or 10 yr old. Marcus miller is BAD check his new track Juice y2k BLAST! same groove feeling. I'm a BIG fan from the 80es

Not that Miller isn't amazing, but I wonder what he would say about this album today.
