  • Lixnux noler fluker I spik haw I rike.

  • Linux: Linus+Xtreme

    (Yes... I'm American)

  • Look in the related videos on the right. He pronounces it differently himself there, more like the 'Swedish' version.

And that soundbyte was standard in every linux system to test your sound card.

  • linus torvalds can beat up chuck norris

  • @JRodriguez609 hahah totally

  • That's how I always say Linux.

  • he's a super nerd. assembled from lesser nerds.

  • los sabia la pronunsiacion es como se lee en español

  • Comment removed

  • linuks

  • The old wav file from the early 1990s, before his accent became more American, it sounds more like "lee-nooks".

  • @xaminmo Yep! And he pronounced his own name LEE-NOOS instead of LIE-NUS.

    LEE-NOOS ... LEE-NOOKS

    LIE-NUS ... LIE-NUX

This is why I stick with the LIE-NUX pronounciation. It just makes more sense since the only difference between "Linus" and "Linux" is the X. I don't care what Linus "Sellout" Torvalds says. LIE-NUX is Linus's kernel. "LIH-NUX" brings to mind air conditioners.

  • Ok stop and listen:

1- I have windows since years ago and I've never had a bluescreen, or virus (I don't even use an AV, its as simple as: "never execute the virus.exe file")

2- I have Linux since the same time and I have never had compatibility errors or bugs.

Conclusion: windows is good, linux is good; linux is free but you can't play videogames.

For everyday use you can work around with both. And both work as long as you have at leat 95 IQ and good practice.

  • lol ... 'Unix' ... 'Linus' ... 'Lenux'

  • @TheLifelessPlanet Then you shouldn't experience bugs unless you use sh*t like Linux or BSD.

  • @TheLifelessPlanet Are you sucking on your mac or do you not grasp the concept of a turn-on button?

  • @TheLifelessPlanet At least it works. Contrary to Linux,

  • @TheLifelessPlanet

    Vista sucks,

    XP is where its at!

Kickin it old school! (well 2005 lol)

  • how do you Pronounce "Windows"?

    bet-ter!

  • But how do I pronounce Gentoo?

  • @4znPpl with a soft "G", it's named after a species of Penguin. Wikipedia says "/ˈdʒɛntuː/" if you read IPA.

  • @kaoru392 then it's not a soft G :P

  • @kaoru392 Soft "G", that's like, the 'j' in 'jug'. I don't really get the words linguists make up. Gentleman Gentle Gen2 Gentoo

  • @4znPpl

    jen-too.

    ^like that.

  • @4znPpl with a soft "G", like the ukrainian one.

  • I always call linux, Linux while others pronounce it Lynux or Lienux. I prefer the english version linux. It doesn't matter what you call it. Linux is open source free use which gives you freedom. My 2011 New Years resoluction it to promote and educate in the use of Linux.

  • LOL ''LAINUX''

  • @LolPomps It's called diphtongs and is used when there aren't enough letters to create all sounds of the language. Nearly every language has them, except p.e. Russian, which simply uses a script with more letters, or some African dialects, which initially didn't have a script at all. There's no language with Latin script not using diphtongs or accents. Even Latin itself had some exceptions from the phonemic pronounciation. Btw, French is closer to Latin than the Scandinavian languages or German.

  • this is one of the most interesting ppl on the planet, i mean think how much he influenced computing, Linux, Open Source movement, Android, Maemo, web servers and the Internet today..

  • Huh. I always thought it was "Ly-nux". Guess I was wrong :P Oh well

  • The point is not pronouncing it the way Torvalds wants, the point is to run it with the GNU software around the kernel.

  • That would put all 'Lai-nux' vs 'Lee-nux' arguments to settle down.

  • lol linus

  • That was pointless.

  • Ubuntu = eww-BUN-2

  • i could never learn another spoken language other than English (my brain doesn't work that way). Linus Torvalds is lucky to have that ability.

  • @heydude09876 the problem is that English is just... wrong. Most of the other European languages are pronounced like Latin, but English and French are pronounced in a weird way.

  • @LolPomps French isn't pronounced in a weird way...english is.

  • @HugoQc1337 Well, it is.. why the hell would you use multiple letters for a singe vocal?

  • @LolPomps eh... they do that in english too...like the sound "oo" its not pronounced like "o"

  • @HugoQc1337 that's what i'm saying.

  • Kubuntu- Koo-boon-too

    Xubuntu- Zoo-boon-too

  • It's weird hearing him speak with an american accent.

  • mac sucks cause i spent $900000 on a 50tb hdd 200gb ram 100000000ghz processor and it was best in the world 2010

  • Say it whatever way you want. Nobody cares.

  • hes given microsoft a good run :)

  • he is a genius.

  • That traitor!

    He caved to the masses!

    Whatever happened to "LEE-nooks"!?

  • @ToonPal lol, too bad, it's 'li-nicks' now, buddy....lol

hey, I wonder what kind of computer he's got back there. It better not be a windows PC....lol

  • @ToonPal isnt that what Linux is all about? the whole and not just the individual? as in one big community.

  • @heydude09876 The Linux kernel may be GPL-licensed, but it's still Linus's baby. To change its pronunciation to appeal to the masses demonstrates a lack of pride, in my opinion. Now, if I wanted to name a kernel or operating system around the concept of the whole and not just the individual, I'd probably call it "CommuneX".

  • Linus or Lynus , which exactly do you prefer pronunciation?

Linus veya Lynus, tam olarak telaffuz tercih ediyorsunuz?

when I speak swedish it is Linus

    İsveççe konuşursam linus

When I speak finnish it is linus

    Fince konuşursam linus

When I speak english it is lynus

    ingilizce konuşursam lynus

and I really dont care people pronunciate my name but linux is always linux

insanların ismimi nasıl telaffuz ettiğini gerçekten önemsemiyorum fakat linux her zaman linux'dur.

  • jajaja que risa Lainux -.-

  • linux..is always..linux...he got that right... thanx LINUS

  • it annoys me when people say lienux

  • @lowtone10

I made the mistake of trying to correct my programming teacher who pronounced it just like that. He gave me a dirty look and no longer joined me for a smoke at break times (where I would often get pro-tips on assignments)

  • @OneShotPaddy. It's quite true that doing well in school is about agreeing with the prof.

"I spent four years prostrate to the `higher mind'. Got my paper; and i was free!" —Indigo Girls, Closer to Fine

  • This is a great clip, but it is horrifically out of context. The interviewer asks Linus Torvalds, how he pronounces his own name. Linus responds by providing numerous pronunciations, based on various languages.

  • NERD

  • Linux as in "in ux", Not "Line ux". Always wondered about that myself, thanks for posting.

  • Linux as in "in ux", Not "Line ux". Always wondered about that myself, thanks for posting.

  • hooorah!

  • fuck yeah

  • He looks like a penguin.

Not very many people who I could say I could not do without. MLK, JFK, Mom. He may not be like these guys but I don't know what I would do without Linux. Well I would be a UNIX head I like BSD but not as much as my Linny boxes.

  • this man is GOD for me!

    LINUX NEVER DIE !

  • オレの名前はどぉ発音してもいいけど、Linuxはリナックスだょ。

  • Why pronounce it like that though?

  • @clayto1332 It's somewhat the same how it's pronounced in the original language (Finnish or Swedish)

  • He's directing his attention to his name note how in the end he says , Linux is always Linux

  • It never fails to amaze me how Americanized his accent has become.

  • He has a Swedish name, though he might be part Finnish descent

  • look at you nerds

  • He's from sweden! Woohooo!

  • No, he's from Finland, but I believe he speaks Swedish as a first language.

  • wtf are you talking about he's from finland you asshole

  • He is finnish, but he speaks swedish and finnish.

  • When I speak English I say Linux, like Torvalds says in the end..

When I speak Dutch however, I say Linux, with the I pronounced as the 'e' in 'me'..

  • A smart guy like Linux would understand the value of phonetic pronunciation. Hence the reasoning that a word may be pronounced differently in the context of a different language.

Fine example being oo-boon-too. If my native tongue was Swahili, maybe, but in English it's oo-bun-too. or even you-bun-too.

Just ask a Japanese guy how Slackware is pronounced. As long as you know what he's talking about, does it matter?

  • An hero.

  • A smart guy would know how to spell Linus's name. :)

  • Aha you got me!

  • He is called Linus not "Linux"

  • yeah, typos happen, I'm not too shook up about it

  • i hope you realize that's it's his own name they are talking about and not about Linux?!

  • please skip to 0:14

    "...but Linux is always Linux."

  • GNU/Pardus türkçe bize vurmuyor galiba bu :)

  • it really gets on my nerves when they pronounce it: Ly-nix. and whatever happened to mandrake!?! its now mandriva!?! lmao

  • i pronose it lon-oze

  • ever listened to someone with a bad finnish accent they like to have multiple pronunciations for all words

  • alright, so now, what's the pronunciation of Ubuntu, Fedora, and many other distros??

  • Ubuntu- "Oo-boon-too"

    Fedora- "Fed-oar-ah"

OpenSuSE- "oh-pen soos" or "oh-pen ess you ess ee."

    Sabayon - "Sab-ah-yon"

    Arch Linux - "Arch Li-nucks".

    Linux Mint - "Li-nucks Mint"

    CentOS - "Sent Oh Ess"

    Debian - "Deb-eean"

    Slackware - "Slak-wayre"

  • Truth.

  • No OpenSuSE is "oh-pen-su-sie"

  • @xAetherxx i vary between oo-boon-too and you-bun-too

  • @xAetherxx I don't care how you pronounce it. Just use it. Let's all move past the "Pronunciation Police" thing.

  • @xAetherxx Also OpenSuse can also be pronounced as Open soo-se

  • @xAetherxx For me it's

    Ubuntu - "Oo-bun-two"

    Fedora is same

OpenSuSE - "oh-pen seus" (like zeus with an s)

and the rest are the same

  • @xAetherxx I say:

    Fedora- "Fuh-door-uh"

    Linux Mint- "Lih-nucks mint"

  • @xAetherxx no, Ubuntu- "Can't ins-tall deb-eean"

  • @xAetherxx I thought it was Oo-bun-too

  • People from Nordic countries seem to enjoy having multiple pronounciations for names...

  • Yes, that and also bludgeoning fur seals.

  • Now that we know how it is pronounced, every world crisis will end!

  • I pronounce it like in sweden. Because i'm danish and swedish.

  • he´s cute

  • Perhaps it is you that sucks.

  • OK that's cool. Go back and praise your proprietary operating system and its abusive EULA.

  • @XFi6 Or use the one that limits you is based upon hallucinatory pipe-dreams!

  • Well what OS do you prefer then?

  • No.

  • Hey whata ya know, its sounds like its spelled.

  • I pronounce it like LIE-NUX

  • Same

  • Your name suits you.

  • I've always said it Lin-ex anyway. Good video to show the noobs, though.

  • Линукс пичка ти матерна ;)

  • hey your russian lol

  • hey you're English lol

  • Oh thank GOD for this video... what a fight I had the other day about this! Someone INSISTED Linux was pronounced "Line-ux"

  • I think everyone who uses Linux should learn to pronounce the name right, just so they don't embarrassed themselves in public lol

  • whoever speaks about operating systems in public need to get more friends

  • Hell yeah

  • Me thinks devestationn is just another apple fanboy who's jealous of our superior operating system ;)

  • linux is always linux!!

    :D

  • Now here's a problem: how to pronounce Ubuntu! XD

  • oo boon too

  • Or maybe oo bun too? Who knows...

  • YOu know im pretty sure theres a video on thwe original african word ubuntu ill need to check that

  • ea beun teaux

  • This guy is TRILINGUAL (at least)...yes, he is a genius. I say this as someone who is a non-geek--as geeky as I get is watching 'Chuck', or admiring hentai art.

Apparently, Bill Gates isn't such a bad guy. He certainly is quite a philanthropist. however, Microsoft has done some VERY underhanded business moves (e.g., SCO). Gates has also made some incredibly bone-headed business decisions, too; Gates isn't the businessman that Steve Jobs is.

  • Gates is an all right guy, but his company seems to be very stupid.

  • gates outside of the computer world is an ok guy, hes a thief when it comes to computers, and his company is definitely stupid but not what he made himself

  • Yes, trilingual. Nobody ever appreciates the fact that he's a Swedish speaking Finn though. :(

    Finlandssvenskar are never noticed. >:-(

Sorry I had to have my little rant.

  • Why not? Finlandssvenska sounds so good :P

    Like Mark Levengood.

  • He might be a genius, but not because he is fluent in 3 languages, because that is simply the result of being born in Finland with Swedish as the first language. It is inevitable for Swedish speaking Finns to not learn Finnish, and it's easier for them (than for Finns) to learn English, since English and Swedish are both Germanic languages while Finnish is Finno-Ugric.

This means that every highly educated Swedish speaking Finn is trilingual.

  • I speak four languanges...but I'm not that bright! :p

  • True (I am from sweden if you need proof)

  • Thank you.

  • he is not gay... And what the heck would it matter if he happened to be gay? Darn, could you just grow up.

  • Damn right.

  • @Cleora

this reply is a little old, but homosexuality is not wrong! just look at judas priest and queen!

  • no hes married and has i think 3 daughters

  • ya dude i live in the same town as him

    OREGON BABY !!!!

  • how do you feel about me telling that your mom is a ho ??

the same way any one feels about your comment you fuck !

  • Well gee, not too many lesbians get married to men.

  • Linus in Finnish sounds like in Italian

    i love this man

  • his wife is a Finnish karate champion and a total knockout. He doesn't have a problem with money, but he earns a regular salary like everyone else - because, get this, the Linux operating system is FREE. You clearly have no fucking clue about what you are talking about.

  • Yep, he is a nerd, and he probably has more money between his couch cushions than you have in your entire bank account.

  • you're a reeeeeeeeeeeeeetard

  • Well obviously someone is suffering from an inferiority complex.

  • He's married to a karate champion you know.

  • Show some respect to the father of linux

  • ive been saying it wrong, for 2 years. =[

linux is super, ive just switched from windows, and i love it. i dont know how i managed to use windows or mac for so long.

    i <3 linux

  • so learn how to..

I learnt it two years ago.

  • Ah. That's cleared it up nicely for me.

  • Linux for life, homie.

  • Linux is always linux.

    \m/

  • Linus Torvalds, the king, the best ever.

  • Linux is by far the only OS that doesn't crash. I've had application crashes, but not OS crashes.

  • I'm actually pro-linux, but the above is just bull shit.

I guess you've never heard of a kernel panic.
