Chickens have an innate need for scratching and you are denying them this, also, they need to be able to take dirt baths in order for them to combat parasites. I like the ´gimmick vallue´ of your design, and you are obviously a skilled builder but the intrinsic values and needs of the animals need to be met.
Nice Idea, it's a tractor, not a coop! You might want to think about using a fencing with bigger holes, so the grass sticks through and the chickens can still scratch, but then you'd have to be carefull when moving it (so no choock toes are lost in the proces). And then of course, add a water bottle thingy... this could be nice for a little while.
NOT GOOD... This is a big bird cage but for chickens. This is for the owner not for the chickens. I have a chicken farm and these chickens don't even come close to looking happy. Instead there pacing back and forth. Where r there nesting boxes and dirt to scratch. Rethink the design, Mr.
I LOVE THIS!! Can you tell me if you have a way to include water for the birds. This rolling coop would be perfect for my situation if I can just figure out how to have water.
I MIGHT TRY THIS FOR RABBITS !! --they do a great job mowing my yard when I set up a portable wire pen ..keep those boys and girls apart untill needed !!So hot right now my breeders are inside with the A/C ...but they need some outside graze time too ..this would be great and faster than setting up a pen, garden is dead now anyway so time to let the bunnies clean up the space!!
Everyone has different needs, priorities, and land area so you have to factor in all your variables (land, predators, chicken health, welfare, profit, eggs, etc.) when choosing how to house your chickens.
This project was designed for protecting animals from predators and also protecting your lawn from being dug up. It has been tested with chicken and they seem to like it, they food ,water and shelter which is more than you can say for 20% of the worlds population. This is a urban farming project.
this is a bad design. It only allows a small patch of grass to be accessible by the chickens. Also as "virtualRealityTV" pointed out chickens scratch ceaselessly, the chickens will hurt their feet on the cage.
@astrialkil I am happy to answer questions, but dislike people when they make statements with little or no facts to base there case, by all means set up this experiment for your self and publish your results that would help everybody, My guess is that you do not keep chickens ! and probably never will
@greenecorevolution Boy did you guess wrong! Ive had chickens out side in a chicken coop for 3 years and Ive had chickens in my front room for 1 1/2 years. Ive raised bantams, road island reds,Plymouth rocks, buff rocks, a leg horn , Cornish cross meat chickens, and a couple from my uncle that i don't know the pedigree of. I know chickens, and every chicken i have ever seen scratched the ground/bottom pan constantly. The only way i could see chickens not scratching is if it hurt their feet.
think u have overlooked the value of a cgickens natural need to scratch and forage in the soil digging is their main skill ... not eating/pecking. seems a bit cruel
Very nice project! Thanks for doing so nice new things, and showing them!! I know little about chicken growing, only read some things.. ¿how often would you need to move them so they get to eat enough grass/earthly things? ¿what is your climate? ¿do you take them to other places, enclosed maybe? ¿have you had generations living in these mobile cages? Greetings form Madrid, Spain, and thanks again!

No good. Well built but poor concept.

Brilliant design, but personally I'd rather have my chooks scratching around in the dirt...not on wire.

This is one more option for people to consider.
Better than battery cages? yes.
Better than free range? no.
Everyone has different needs, priorities, and land area so you have to factor in all your variables (land, predators, chicken health, welfare, profit, eggs, etc.) when choosing how to house your chickens.
