In the war there were even worse maritime disasters! In 1941 the Armenia sank by a German torpedo, claiming 7.000 lives! And then the biggest of all; the Wilhelm Gustloff! Some say the death toll was just something like 7.700, but due to the huge amount of illegal refugees aboard, the loss of life is surely over 10.000. Someone told me that it's 15.000, but no one will ever be sure of that!

But as you can see; Titanic was not really a big deal (although I'm really fascinated by its story). The reason why Titanic is way more popular than all those other shipwrecks is that it took over 2 hours to sink, while all those other ships sank in a few minutes.. Alot of special, heroic things happened in those two hours, what makes it more fascinating than, for example, the story on board the Wilhelm Gustloff, which sank in about 40 minutes.
