  • @psycho15 um a couple buddies of mine just got gto's 1 an o4 ls1 m6 and a 06 a4 ls2 and I rape them both and I've gone auto and only run 14.2 at the track so explain that! I've slowed down and still win they are heavy and that is they're downfall

  • dude, if your a GOOD DRIVER, a manual will always win over an automatic. less power loss, double clutch, launch, 60 foot, there are so many advances of owning a manual in a race if you know how to work it. that and it's the whole point of racing. ask any real racer.

  • @IspooledurMom Not if you're a good driver with a manual. Manual will get auto off the line if you know what you're doing. And if you shift fast enough you can match the auto racer in shifts plus there's less hp loss through drivetrain in a manual and less maintenence required in a manual.

  • you are sadly mistaken, a standard trany has less power loss, weights less, and can be shifted faster than the auto trany (stock for stock)

    also there is no fukin way a stock ls1 is going to run a 10.8 in a 1/4 mile with just a trany and computer swap. NO FUKIN WAYY! You'd need almost 600hp to get that quick in a stock weight camaro.

    yes autos are used for drag, its not really feasible to shift 6 gears in less than 8 seconds now is it?

  • The stock auto is slower in the Camaro than it is with the stock manual, I have had both. But you CAN get a better auto trans, or even just a shift kit, and tinker with the computer a little and change shift patterns, and the auto is quicker. My auto ran 10.8 after the tranny and computer swap , compared to 12.3 bone stock. Hell that is why I sold my 6 speed ls1.

  • I agree with the auto guys. I like both manual and automatic cars but for racing with a big V8 the autos are the way to go. Manuals are fun but in a race of equal HP cars the auto is going to smoke the manual 8 out of 10 times. Guaranteed. I've seen it happen constantly.

  • Explain what? With equal HP a automatic will beat a manual a majority of the time. As long as you don't race an auto in it's dead spot(usually 40-45mph to 55mph) the auto will win. From a stop the auto is going to be faster most of the time. I've seen it hundreds of times. Not a big deal if you aren't racing but if you race with your car alot a automatic is the way to go. Add a stall to a auto and it will kill.

  • i compleatly disagree, a manual willstart faster, and have a higher top end, i know this from experience, an automatic is a toy compared with a manual,and maybe you just dont know how to drive a manual properly

  • I guess you are just one of those guys that think they are cool and so talented because they drive a manual. Anyone that wants a manual car can go buy one. There's nothing special about pushing in the clutch, changing gears and letting out on the clutch.

    I've owned several manuals and autos and yes I can drive a manual very well. I don't have a favorite and like both but with equal HP cars the autos are faster. Go to the track and see what the faster cars are.

  • No, I'm talking about stock vs. stock. Of course autos lose more HP through the drivetrain but they shift so much faster. As long as you don't race in the auto's dead spot.

    Anyway, buy and drive what you like. Both autos and manuals are fun to me and there's always someone faster. I just like having fun. There are just so many people that underestimate the autos and give in to the manual hype. Both are fast and fun.

  • Not from my experience. With Ford's, like the Mustangs, the manual may be faster than the auto, I don't know since I've never owned one but with GM's, like the Camaros, Trans Am's and GTO's the auto's are quicker for the most part.

  • a manual tranny, allows you to decide what rpm you want to shift at, (high rpm means go faster in next gear )in an auto tranny, the shift rpm depends on throttle positon, and if it is in a newer vehicle, the ECU would have a part in controlling this.

    so why do aftermarket companies sell shift kits for auto transmissions, and not manuals

  • Well, when you are racing the throttle is usually wide open so it doesn't matter unless the auto is in its dead spot. Otherwise it will shift down just like you would in a manual.

    Shift kits are mainly for quicker and harder shifts over stock and also can beef up the auto tranny for more HP. You can also program a auto to shift differently if you want to get into mods over stock autos.

    Throttle pressure is the key to autos. I can make mine shift at what ever RPM I want it to shift at.

  • No biggie. People have different takes on different things. I'm going from my experience and what I have seen as I am sure you are doing the same.

    When I had my Z28 auto, which was stock, there wasn't a stock 6 speed that I faced that beat me. I was also beaten several times by auto Z28's and TA's with my 6 speed TA. Of course I won a few also with my 6 speed but from what I have seen personally the autos pull slightly harder, especially up to 100-120mph.

  • I saw a WS6 (modded) put a couple of lengths on a LS2 GTO lastnite... both manual. In my older age I'm starting to prefer an auto but you better have alot of power b/c if you are caught barely into 2nd or 3rd the manual will walk away, being in it's powerband. So, at the strip with SERIOUS cars auto is better (no missed shifts, more consistant) on the street manual is better (various speeds and always closer to it's power band). That's my story and I'm sticking to it. lol

    X-pipe, Nitto NT555R's and a 150 shot. I've seen Manual GTO's with more mods barely running low 12's.

  • i agree, manuals are fun to play around with on the street but sucks for racing. Auto all the way for racing, nothing launches like an ls based motor with a stall. hats off for both cars

  • @rastarajah Nice track numbers man. I've got a 231/234 cam, header, bolt ons, 3000 sall and ran 12.3 @ 111 1.8 60' with a 5000DA. A4 FTW

  • @rastarajah it is sad but true. An auto GTO is faster than an M6. The M6's suffer from more severe wheel hop in first and second gear. I know because I have an M6. However once an M6 Goat gets into 2nd gear it is a force to be reckoned with.
