that was an impressive 1 i built 1 once when i was 17 it was slightly bigger that it but the same basic plan only differance was tanned deer hide for the door flap and for the bedding i used grass from a field and made it about 1 foot deep and laid tanned deer hide over it and instead of the blocks for the fire pit i used big rocks which a few were big enough and i chipped a side on them flat as possable so the heat of the fire got them hot and i could cook directly on the flat spot of the rocks
Hey Dave! Thanks for another great video! I've built several primitive shelters in the woods over the years, but I've probably built many more in my mind. One idea I've had for a wiki,(and I'm sure its already been done), is to build an A-frame vestibule onto the entrance. It would make it easier to seal the entrance without the leaves constantly falling down and also provide more storage area,(for firewood during the winter ?)
What keeps carbon monoxide from building up when you have a fire indoor like that? Do you have to leave an opening somewhere in the bottom to allow air in or something?
Also: am old refridgerator grate works grat on a fire pit for cooking and old bricks or rocks can actually LINE your fire pit if you want to dig it out so that its not above ground... if you are in the south;the wikkie is your friend! ...free mud, sticks, and cellulose material(straw,leaves,etc.)...
I see alot of mycelium on the logs on the inside of the wikkie, have you ever found growing mushrooms in there?
Ever thought of having mushrooms on your inside walls? :)
If it interests you, find a mushroom that's edible and grows on wood, Grind it down to a slushie (miz a bit of water in it, and if it's a small ammount it's no problem to dilute it pretty heavy), and smear it on the bottom of the inside walls in between the ground and logs!
Hey Dave! Thanks for the video. I've never seen a Wikkie. I also want to thank you for another great video. And I noticed something different about you in this video than in all the others. I'm pretty sure I saw you smile. LOL You are a teacher of serious things, and I think that you are one of (if not the best) survival teacher ever. And I've seen a lot. You are my favorite teacher (and not because I'm from Dayton, Ohio..LOL Great to see you smiling, my brother. Would be honored to meet you.
I am digging this new "Pathfinder Cribs" series, great idea.
BTW, you do know what yurt stands for, don't you?
Your ugly round tent.
Just kidding brother, I am anxious to see more about the yurt because I can see where it would have some great advantages over a wikkie; ease of set up, portability, less maintenance, etc.
thanks for another good vid! i wouldnt mind sleeping in there for an extended amount of time. prolly much warmer then buying some crappy basic tent for $100
on the outsidewalls you can put on more dirt, that will insolate the crib more. very nicely buildt. Muste be fun to stay out there and life the simple life style. And then after a few days going back into a nice house and appreciate all the luxus there.
Dave being that u packed it with a good several inches of mud insulation, can u hear outside if someone or something is approaching in a defencive situation?
That thing is awesome. I had a few questions: Whats the longest period of time you spent camped in the wikkie? I Do a lot of backpacking but have never slept in a primitive style shelter. How bad do you get chewed up by the bugs and do you still ever get ebejeebies at night because of the critters?
Wikkie + pipe bowl = Dave with perma grin puff puff pass LOL jk Dave :) Very nice shelter man and thanks for all the effort and hard work you do for us all
Very cool Dave. My 10 year old daughter and I started a wikkie sort of like this but more teepee like at the beginning of fall. Had a lot of fun doing it and it was great bonding time. It just needs a lot more debris on it and there is no mud available, but we plan on finishing it before winter comes and spending a night or two in it since it is very roomy. Thanks so much for the ideas! We look forward every week to every video you put out. Please keep it up. Thanks again!
Lovin the videos Dave...keep em comin! Seriously, this is really great stuff and the fact that we can all enjoy them for free is just incredible. Very much appreciated brother.

Dave, how do you prevent carbon monoxide poisoning with the fire burning? We had several deaths in the UK with people bringing disposable BBQs into tents in bad weather...isn't it the same deal in the wiki with that fire going?
@spuddyholly its just like a yurt or a teepee the hole in the top sucks the smoke out and draws fresh air in thru the bottom and around the door , tents dont have holes to let bad air out or enough fresh air in. so people that dont know better kill themselfs.
@spuddyholly I'm not an expert, but I believe the byproducts of burning wood is different from burning propane or natural gas. Also, if the wood isn't vented, you'd get smoked out of your shelter, if the propane isn't vented, you might not realize it until its too late.

Dave, stack an additional Concrete Flu Block to achieve 'Rocket Stove' operation and secondary burn of flu gases; this will consume 80% less wood, for twice the heat benefit. What we want for safety and efficiency, is for the vertical chamber to get so hot that there is almost complete combustion, with most of the smoke consumed.
Right on brother!.....keep it going, oh yeah im loving the comparison of the frontier tech. and the new tech......dont know why but the vintage stuff really catches my eye....peace.
Dave, I have to say that is one of the best shelters I have ever seen! Looks very comfortable and I would be very happy to live in there. I think even Lundin would be just as amazed as me. Great work!

The next class can give you a little Christmas gift and make a flat clay cover for your fire pit.
Smother the fire. Control the heat and fuel consumption as a flew. Nice little stove top surface.
On second thought. Maybe some kids should do it for you.
A few hand prints in the clay would be worth having.
Home sweet home.

c) Finish shooting and return to your dept filled house in the ghetto.
