I think anyone studying Kendo, would agree it is indeed a sport. It is Japanese fencing, essentially. Nothing at all wrong with that, it is a martial art, it is sparring, and requires dedication and hard work to master. It has set rules of where and how you can strike, it is not an open sparring art.
Good video Eric, nice group you have there. Where are you guys at?
@squidwalker77 Thank you. And I do regret how I phrased my comments regarding Kendo and Iaido. I did speak poorly. They are not sports, and are very authentic. As for location, we are located in Santa Clara currently. Can find us on the Shinkendo website or seaching for Tojokan Dojo.
Glad to see that you are very passionate about Sinkendo. But Kendo and Iaido are not a sport. They are martial arts. Shinkendo was invernted in the 80's by Toshishiro Obata and loosely based off of Totama Ryu. If you had studied kendo for any length of time or Iaido then I think maybe your idea would be different. Shinkendo is not authentic it is barely 30 years old. Katori-Shinto Ryu, Muso Jikeden are way older and battlefield proven. Do a little homework. Im not hating, just informing...
@JARCHIE1973 I do regret how I phrased. The Kendo group I trained with for a year was what I was basis my experience off of. I have been invited to several others that were much more traditional then what I experienced. I'm have studied the history of Shinkendo. I won't go into more because it's not my place as an instructor. But I do regret what I said. Since this video I have made sure not to make any comments like that again.
