that was my first thought too, but you can clearly see the electrical current run through the front of the plain to the back then to the ground. It even looks like the plain actually jolted a bit. (pun intended) XD
@offthelinegt thats true to an extent from time to time a plane gets hit wrong and something fails then u die by falling out of the sky ... but as a rule of thumb your right
@xXAssassinNationXx planes are bilt with something to protect them from lightning, so they can travel during a storm. they wouldnt cancel the flight for a storm but if it is very bad then they may delay it, but a good airline never delays for a storm
@imogengraceleyshon good airlines always delay for bad weather. theyd rather hear ppl bitch and moan about a delay as pay compensation to their families for being killed due to windshear or too low rvr.
@Gamatech123 i remember hearing that every single airliner on earth gets hit at least once a year, and its safe because of the discharging wicks on the fuselage and wings. but they still fly around them if possible
I may be flying to a country that's about 18 hours away and I was wondering if it's safer to fly through military planes with other military or w/e or to fly normally? ...if that makes sense... I don't know anything about planes or aviation. XD
I was on a 747 flight over bay of bengal at night and we were going through a big storm I am sure we got hit several times and everyone was frightened, not a good experience
Boeing airplanes are the safest planes unlike airbus. There are too many computers on airbus planes. Pilot tend to depend too much on the autopilots computers, and when the computers gives up, the pilots are in deep trouble.
@neerajmjj That is not true, If you have ever watched air crash investigation, you would notice that the majority of plane crashes happen with Boeing planes. I would always feel much safer flying aboard a Airbus than a Boeing any day, All those computers are ensuring that pilot error is minimized to the fullest.
Aircrash investigations investigates more on old crashes mainly in the 1990s. And at that time there were more boeing than airbus in the skies. That's why you see more boeings in aircrash investigations. What happens when the computers gives up in airbus planes, they all crash. What happen to the A320 in the airshow??, it went into landing mode without warning the pilot.
A Boeing airplane takes off or lands somewhere in the world every two seconds, boeing is recognized as the safest plane constructor in world. An airbus spokesman once that they want to make a pilot proof airplane. That is there's no control of the pilot at all in the plane. Would like to fly in that plane?? i trust humans more than machines, because machines cannot improvise, they just give up when they cant find a solution. Well, that's ur choice if u like airbus.
@neerajmjj couldn't the computers be monitered consantly by humans, they would see control panels positions and aircraft destination, not to mention the mode the computers are in, then if the computers fail the poilts could have sevral ways to gain control (in case breaks) then the plane could be flown manualy. (im only 11!)
When having too many computers on a plane. The pilots tends to rely too much on the autopilot and relax too much. When the computers gives up, its often too late to save the plane. For example in a stall, or exceeded bank angle. Sure it can be argued that computers made flying safer. But i still trust humans more than machines.
@neerajmjj You got a point and look at the plane that crashed at the air show because of the onboard computer! It was a complete disaster! To much technology in aplane isnt necessary! i think! :D
@exkuhpid They could but the problem is the human brain can only process certain amounts of informtion for certain periods of time! And for that reason if we relied on pilots eyes to monitor the computers more and more accidents could occur! :D Im 16! lol
@Conor3914 i think i understand.. rip all the computers from all the planes in the world! we could rely on pilots 25 years ago and we can rely on them now!
I did have one instance where the pilot swore that lightning had actually entered inside the aircraft into the cockpit. He said "you probably think I'm crazy but there was a lightning bolt that came into the cockpit and ran across my legs". I did think he was crazy until I found a small entrance hole in the nose of the aircraft just to the right of where his feet rest on the rudder pedals.
Happens all the time. It's really no big deal. Half the time the crew is not even aware. It is hard to tell if you've been hit or if it was just near by. I have done hundreds of lightning strike inspections as an aircraft mechanic. Damage is usually minimal due to all the surfaces being grounded and bonded. This is just your typical strike where the lightning goes in the nose area and out the tail.
@chromo48 Aircraft use what is referred to as single wire circuits. A single wire to provide the positive side of the electrical circuit and the airframe acts as the rest of the circuit commonly referred to as the ground but it isn't truely a ground or "earth ground" like you are thinking of. This type of circuit is of course preferrable on aircraft since it weighs half as much as a two wire circuit.Composite panels have wire mesh impregnated on their surface and attached with screws.
@chromo48 this supplied grounding or electrical bonding of the panel. There are a few exception to this rule such as the radar's radome on the nose of the aircraft. It is composite but can't use mesh due to the fact that it would interfere with the radar signal. Instead they use lightning diverter strips.
a row of very tiny metal dots spaced evenly apart. If struck by lightning it jumps along the line of dots and doesn't damage the composite radome. All doors hinges and bearings have bonding
@chromo48 in the form of bonding wires to provide an alternate path for electron flow instead of having the bearings become welded . a good example is the flight control bearings. Planes don't fly well with the controls welded in place.
@joevil, please enlighten me without judging me, cause science is how I make my living although not in the field of aeronautics and physics of lightening.
the lightning striking the 747 appears to be "doctored" since the lightening is way behind the plane and lighting never strikes twice at the same spot. Also being inside a car or plane is one of the safest place when struck by lightening since the rubber of the wheels acts as a ground.
The lightning struck once. the first flash was the positive and negative charges reaching out and touching each other, the second was the full charge traveling between the clouds and the ground. Rubber makes no difference in a lightning strike as the charge jumps straight to the ground. the metal skin acts as a Faraday cage dissipating the charge away from the interior.
First time l ever flew, l was lucky enough to have been sitting in the jumpseat of a 747-400F and as we made the approach to land at JNB, were hit by a humongous tropical lightning bolt. The Capt was like 'What was that?!' l was thinking if he, the pilot, didn't know what had caused that sickening sound at 10000ft...umm...very soon it would be critical.
Well, there´s no danger if your aircraft´s being hit by lightning. But im pretty sure the pilots are aware of whats happening. Recently i was on my way from Heathrow, when lightning struck our aircraft while in really heavy turbulence. That was so scary and i almost threw up :) It lit up the whole cabin for a sec and came with a loud unpleasant bang. Untill the captain explained i thought it was a engine blowout or something..
How do planes manage to survive a lightning strike? I mean the electrostatic interference would pretty much EMP the shit out of the electronic components inside...unless the casing can act like a faraday cage...
Planes obviously aren't grounded since they are in the air, so it doesn't do anything. The only hing they ever had to worry about was losing some electronics, but they've pretty much fixed all the possibilities of that ever happening.
@DirtyWhiteBoy829 - No, they construct the plane so that the lightning passes through a conductive path which routes it away from serious components; as you noticed the lightning hit the front, exited through the back and then to the earth. Its actually quite common for aircraft to be stuck by lightning.

nope not a fake veryone guess what have you all heard that theres a technoligy like 5 years old where planes dont blow up when their hit by lightning ...yes you people are that stupid... joke no really its true planes dont react from lightning these days!!!
@bonecrusherz98 Actualy, the clip is real. I watched on Raging Planet's lighting documentary. It was so fascinating. Turns out, the planes shape and distence from the ground kept it from exploding. And planes get struck all the time with most not crashing or even losing power. Isn't that something!
@MikeGinny good comment ur completely right. planes are desinged to conduct a bolt of lightning. at least somebody here knows what there talking about. all the rest of the comment are "did it crash"? "did they die"?. lol
When lightning hits a metal object like an airplane, the excess electrons, being negatively charged, all try to move as far from each-other as possible. The only way to accomplish this is if they all move to the very outer skin of the aircraft. Thus, the current is conducted only through the very outer layer of the skin of the aircraft and does not pass through the interior. In all likelihood, the pilots had no idea it even happened. The average airliner is struck once each year.
Well if you piss your pants its more likely to hit there then the rest of the plane....
