Senna said to a close friend that he knew it was very dangerous to race but he was a paid driver and he had to race. Plus he could have won the world championship
Regardless of the fact that Prost didnt need to race as he had the championschip in his pocket, he was right that he didnt want to risk. Senna may wanted to race, but how many really bad races like this he experienced? One, or two? And it always went well for him. But as he crashed into Brundle here by not being able to see him he might realised that this is too much, and that was reflected in 1991 GP here at Adelaide, when after 15 laps he was vawing to the marshalls trying them to stop the race
Guess who insisted to have the race even in those conditions? the same dictator who's in charge stiil today.... Guessed it yet? I'll give you a hint, he goes by the name of Bernie
the only reason prost was so keen on cancelling the race was because he was scared shitless. he knew very well that if the race started senna would own him. because it was before the last race of the year i think and would have the decided the world championship. and we all know what happened in japan in the last race of 89 when prost won in that cowardly cheating manner.
@cheleasulii The season was already decided at Suzuka, and even before Suzuka, Senna's chance of winning the WDC were almost non-existant, cause he needed to win both races without Prost scoring a single point. EVEN IF that happened, he would only win thanks to the "11 best system", meaning he would win scoreing LESS points than Prost (like 1988)
@slicktires2011 I´m sorry, you´re wrong. After Jerez, all Senna needed was the 2 victories despite Prost´s finishes (yes, even if Prost finished 2nd at both Suzuka and Adelaide). Ayrton would have won by the "11 best system" in that situation. To be more precise, even after Portugal the situation was similar: Senna had to win the 3 last races despite Prost´s finishes.
There's always this bravado around racing that drivers should put up or shut up, but there has to be a point at which common sense prevails, and Alain Prost here is showing his frustration at having gone far beyond that point. You can see in his eyes he's just mystified by the stupidity of the situation.
"People don't understand that it was maybe my biggest pleasure to drive an F1 car when it's wet. You were not in control You had no visibility: maybe there was a car in front of you, maybe not (...) The people who criticise you will not be the ones taking care of your legs when you are in your wheelchair.
People who never drove a car in these conditions, they just don't know."
-- Alain Prost, 4 times world champion, 4 times vicechampion, 51 race wins, 41 fastest laps.
Fair play to Alain, its his life on the line at the end of the day so why not pull out. Never would a race take place in those conditions today or any day in the future, i think Fuji 07 is the last time it'll happen.
@KimiHamilton123 the reason prost hated wet, is the pironi accident in 1982. pironi crashed in some of the practice session because he didn't saw prost's renault in the wet. pironi was launched in the air on the back of prost's car and crashed heavily, damaging his lower legs. he was in the wreckage and his injuries were so bad, sid watkins was thinking about amputating pironi's lower legs onsite to remove him from the car.he tested an f1 car 4 years later, but he never raced in formula 1 again.
Prost was 100% right. There wers spins all over on the very first lap. Senna plowed inbto the back of a back-marker when passing another car because he couldn't see a damn think (the onboard video from the car he hit shows the massive spray). Senna was lucky not to have died right then. All they had to do was wait a couple of hours -the rain subsided enough to race. But the sponsors insisted, despite the risks to the drivers.
prost....what a whiney little bitch, it was his last race for mclaren, a team he had been pushed out of by Senna. He had already wrapped the title up in Japan so he didnt really care if he raced. If the story had been different and Prost was trailing Senna in the points coming into that race and he needed to win the race to win the championship you could bet your last french franc that he would have raced no matter what. Whatever suit Alain is all that mattered
This footage cracks me up !. Prost and Mansell noythappy and very uncomfortable with racing in these conditions (rightly so ) it is pissing down with rain !. Then the camera goes to Senna, helmet on, his usual focus and ready to rock !!! Funny !. The late 80s and early 90s were so cool. Loved F1 back then ! Senna forever !!
@thehitchrules That's not funny, actually. That's how Senna was - always ready to race, and Prost? Sitting behind the curtain due to "very dangerous" conditions. Pffff... some driver, and 4-time WC. :/
@thylegion You have completely misinterpreted and misread my post. Read it again and this time CONCENTRATE !! I am a big fan of ALL the drivers of that era and a massive Senna fan .
@deadleg6 He rear ended another car, that is, he screwed up the race of someone who had nothing to do with it. The only thing that it shows is that Senna wasn't capable of racing in those conditions, but he'd rather expose someone else to danger than admit that
@slicktires2011 'Wasn't capable of racing in those conditions'.Get real.He was the only driver there capable of doing so that's why the other drivers whinged. He was lapping seconds faster than anyone else.Yes he ploughed into Brundle in the heavy spray but going by the speed of Brundle it shows what can happen when some drivers are capable and other drivers incapable of racing in the rain. Two years later he won the race in very similar conditions.
@slicktires2011 - if you can't see the other car due to rain but you are in control of your car and you hit the other car, it is called an accident and if anyone's fault it is FIA's fault.
@SlamDuncDrummer How was he in control of his car, for God's sake? He hit the other car, and don't tell me its FIA's fault, because FIA put a rear red light on all cars, so Senna could see him. It's amazing to what extent Senna's fans will go to cover his shortcomings
@slicktires2011 - actually i'm not a Senna fan. It is obvious that you haven't driven in an open cockpit car or kart with a full face helment when it is raining. Everyone behind the leader has extremely limited visibility. Picture driving your car in the rain and fog, if a car slows or stops in front of you on the highway you won't see the car in time to stop or take evasive action, even if the car has the flashers on. You are in control of your car but may not have any options.
@slicktires2011 - if you you can't see, you won't have time to stop or take evasive action. This is exactly what happened and why Prost said it isn't worth my life to try this.
When wearing a full face helmet in the rain your shield often fogs up, tear-offs don't work etc. Much like driving your car in the rain and fog without the aid of your windshield wipers.
@SlamDuncDrummer The footage you mention proves nothing, it's not a helmet camera, the camera is over the air intake, which is totally exposed to wind and rain. Actually, if you have driven a fast single seater, you know that the air (and rain) aerodinamically flows above the helmet. In any case, either Senna couldn't see and accepted the risk of crashing into others, or he could see, but couldn't control the car
@slicktires2011 - ok, now your just being obtuse. I do drive open cockpit cars and karts and can tell you first hand that the on-board camera has better vision than the driver does through the visor. The on-board camera has a plastic lens that rotates through a cleaning solution constantly, your helmet visor does not making it very difficult to see.
You are arguing against yourself. He was in control of his car, he just couldn't see the car in front of him, just like the footage I provided.
@slicktires2011 Grow the fuck up, moron! Who was exposed because of Senna, all others? So you're saying Senna made this race on? Wow. Senna just waited to race unlike that fuckfaced coward Prost. He had his title, so what's the point to race in that conditions, right? Some champion... :/
@thylegion Prost was faced with the possibility of having his championships points erased if he didn't race, so he could lose the title. Still, he decided not to race.

senna for sure was thinking the same way but he want to win so he can go around screraming more louder that prost and balestre stole his title.
senna didn't mind to risk his life and the life of the others, as prove also suzuka 90 or estoril 88, he was always bullyng on the track
