I haven't edited much on Mac, but I can tell you right now how tired I have been of Apple fans always making fun of my pc problems (and I do have a ton of them), but my laptop cost a third of the price of what a mac would have, so it's the best I could do, and with the money I saved I could buy a decent slr camera and save a little bit more for CS 5.5, so not a bad trade-off in my opinion. Sorry for your woes.

Try to get a metal stand that keeps the bottom not covered, so the laptop takes way longer to heat up. Also, just run a couple things at once. Not sure what you use your computer most for, but overall just get rid of videos off imove/Fcut once you've shared them to free up space/performance.
