I thought you had to use Sunlight or Fels Naptha soap. I use a bar of Fels, 1/2 c borax, 1/2c washing soda, 5 gallons of water. It becomes congealed. I keep it in a 5gallon container under the sink and use 1/2c for each load of laundry. I tried it with my homemade soap once, but it didn't work. I see yours doesn't get thick. That must have been a function of the fels naptha (sunlight soap in Canada). However I read the ingredients on the bar. I'll try it with strong homemade lye soap!
@NancyToday I just use any old kind of bar soap I have around. It seems to wash the clothes OK. I love your soap making videos. Let us know how it does with the lye soap.
@lilbeaveymac No! This is MUCH cheaper than even the dollar store brand. Once you but the materials, you probably have enough to make soap for a year for one person.
@LacienTommy I don't know but I would think that adding oil to it would use up some of the cleaning action breaking down the added oil. However, it has a really fresh smell just as it is. I think you would be better to just spay a touch of cologne on the laundered and dried clothes to add scent.
@asloan193 Ya know I have a HE washer and dryer and I use this laundry method but I use the dry soap instead of making the liquid. And my clothes gets clean and I am happy with the results. But as far as the HE washers go, I think it's just a ploy that people think they have to use what is on the market. I mean they dont make a dry laundry soap for HE that I am aware of. I really don't care, I like this and I am going to use it. I do an monthly cleaning cycle on my machine anyway.
You can also just use a bar of dr bronners tea tree bar soap, 1 cup of borax, 1 cup of baking soda . Then add 1 gallon of water and boil it until the shredded soap bar dissolves. Pour it in a 5 gallon bucket and fill the rest of the bucket with hot tap water. Stir. Let it sit overnight and stir in the morning and use 5/8 of it per load
@bemoreonline I hope so. This is a HUGE money saver for me. Additionally, one less thing to remember at the store. And, a whole lot less weight to lug around. I buy enough ingredients once and I am set for the year.
Thanks for taking the time. I made some using this recipe. Just curious how much we are supposed to add to a load of laundry. Is it about the same amount as regular detergent? Thanks in advance.
I bet this laundry soap is more healthy because it doesn't contain all the harsh chemicals store bought soaps have. When I use the soap from the store it makes me skin itchy and erritates my skin so I use a lot less liquid but I want to make my own now. Thanks
@sunnflourr I am glad you found me again. I personally usually double the recipe. Any more than that would be awkward and heavy for me to handle. I keep it for a very long time and have never had a problem with it getting old. Just shake it up if you need to.
hahaha be sure to get your tetanus shot before using THIS homemade laundry soap though! lol ..wassup with that rusty cheese grater??! That can't be healthy.
thank you so much, i just made my first laundry soap, it's not as perfect as your but i believe it will work great!
unfortunately i got a bit intoxicated (and my careworker too) when the soap got warm with the hot watter, so i recomment any person with Multiple Chemical Syndromme to be very careful with the soap they choose (i got the safest i was able to find), and probably with Borax too.

With six people in my house, and three of them being teenage girls, i am spending a fortune on laundry soap. Do you know if this soap can be used in the he washers? In a pinch I have watered down regular soap, as i dont trust the kids to use half the regular amount. Can this be watered down a little to work in the front load machines? Does it have a lot of sudsing? If not, I think it could be used as is. Thanks for the video. You did a good job.
Indeed it can be used in washers. It is so cheap and the ingredients make so much that I don't think you will even have to worry about making it stretch.
Thank you for your reply. I think i may have been a little confusing in my question. I have a front load high efficiency washer that requires special soap just for those. If this soap you make does not make a lot of suds, i think i can use it.
@evilgidget It really is not very sudsy. I think you will be OK. Of course, I have not had a chance to test it in your kind of machine. If you decide to, will you let the rest of us know howit does? Thanks.
Well, it is washing soda, one of the key ingredients in any kind of detergent. It must have a chemical name but I don't know what it is. It isn't the same thing as baking soda so look for the right stuff as shown in the video. You can find it in the laundry isle at Krogers and many other stores. Wal-Mart doesn't carry it here.
Thanks for posting this SSanf,I been looking at a bunch of these lately, yours is the 1st one I could really understand and relate to.I think now I can do it too,as I do not and can not pay $12.00 for laundry soap,I just refuse to do it.I can't afford it.I have the ingredients,If I need help, could I email you? Thanks, from another old lady.
That same $12 will probably keep you in laundry detergent for a year or more. Of course, you can PM me but I think that you will find it is a snap to do. Don't let it boil over or you will be wiping up a mess. And, remember to shake the bottle before use. You should be fine with this project.
SSanf, sorry the Ivory soap comment wasn't geared towards you. It was geared towards another poster who seemed to have a condiscending attitude towards you. It got my goat so to speak as you seem to be a nice person and a simple thank you from the poster should have been sufficient. That person knows you can use pretty much any soap for this recipe and they didn't need to be rude. Call it a character flaw of mine. I hate to see people be rude to people who are kind enough to help them.
SSanf love the video. Also, Ivory is soap. Only synthetic ingredient in it is tetrasodium edta which is not a detergent but a chelating agent. In other words it absorbs metals so the soap can suds in hard water. Everything else in the soap is a natural ingredient or a natural result of the soap making process. Also the tetra sodium edta makes less than 1% of the ingredients and since it is not a detergent, Ivory is a soap. I wish people would learn chemistry before they post.
Thanks fort the information. I am afraid chemistry is not my field so I have nothing to offer except that they claim to be soap and who am I to argue with that?
Has anyone tried this recipie with a true ba of soap - instead of the bar of detergent shown in the video? Most people don't realize that those bar 'soaps' we buy at the store are chemical detergents, and yes, there is a difference.
Just wondered if anyone had tried it. We prefer to avoid artifical chemicals wherever we can (including chemical fragrences). But a few drops of a concentrated (aka 'essential') oil of something you like the smell of should work.
Wouldn't a supersize box of soap concentrate from Cosco last a year. I get 3 or 4 months out a regular box of tide, so a supersize box would last me a year.
i found arm and hammer pure baking soda in a large box in the same area as the borax at the store...is that the same thing as the arm and hammer washing soda u are using? what is the difference if any..btw it says on the box about how it helps the laundry. Also, I thought u were suppose to use Fels Naptha bar soap?? does it matter what kinda soap bar u use?
I'm getting into making homemade soap, so this will be a wonderful use for my shavings I get after I pour my soaps into the molds. The crockpot is always covered with hard soap and I scrap that out, now I'm going to make laundry soap! Thanks for sharing this video with us!
I have been making my own laundry soap for almost 10 months now, I have spent 15 dollars in all, I have passed it on and now all my family and even my husband's coal mining buddies are using it. great receipe
Thanks so much for this video! I had received the same recipe from a gal at church but it's always great to see it done! I will never go back to regular detergent! My clothes came out so soft...I also added a bit of vinegar to the rinse cycle instead of fab softener. I hung them on the line and they were soft instead of stiff like they used to be with regular detergent.
And the smell is heavenly clean and natural!! Many thanks!!!
Im going to try making some this weekend! This is something that I have always wanted to try, and considering the way things are now..I am looking for any way to save money!! Thank you for you video!!! Im so excited to do this this weekend!
Thanks alot ladies! I have a large family and am always looking for practical ways to save money. I am currently spending about $20 a month on laundry soap, and I guess I can be spending that in a year. Great tip!
I've made this a few times, the first time with ivory soap and then with Fels Naptha soap-I like the Fels Baptha as it gives the clothes a slight lemony fresh smell. but you are absolutely right it works as good, if not better than anything i've bought in the store and i feel good that it does not have all the unnecessary chemicals. 1 cup is all it takes for a load.
Hello and many thanks for this convenient qty recipe for laundry detergent. Question: Is there any modification for making a version for GENTLE hand washed type detergent?
Also, wondering if using distilled water would have any beneficial affect on lumping effect or perhaps making the detergent gentler?
Unfortunately, I do not thing baking soda, which is more commonly available, can be substituted. I think it has a different chemical composition.
Do you have a Kroger store nearby? They carry all the ingredients here. If not, let your fingers do the walking and call around. Surely, some store has it. And, it is well worth the time to make a few calls.
my only prob is that my batch once cooled turn into one big glob. is that normal?? i added some water to it and stirred it up. i am not sure if this was a good batch now. i am still going to use it to see how well it works out.
Well, I am very cheap. So, I buy whatever is on sale for the shower and use the bits that get too small for bathing when I make laundry soap. How is that for cheap?
You said you thought your recipe for laundry soap gave you a better-cleaning product; I'm curious, do you think there is ANYTHING superior to the store-bought variety? I can't think of what that might be... What are all those "whiteners and brighteners" in detergents? Hey, do you use fabric softener?
All I can go by is the results I see. I think this is just as good as the store bought detergent. But, that of course is subjective and I guess would vary by user depending on what messes they need to clean. I have no clue what all that stuff they put in the store bought detergents is. However, I am pretty sure the main purpose of it all is to jack the price up.
I still use fabric softener but other people have told me white vinegar in the rinse works as well.
Actually, considering the cost and the fact that it leaves absolutely no odor in the clothes and it cleans just fine, I really think this is the better product.
Well, I think you are supposed to only use a little of the vinegar. I haven't tried it yet. I think you will be pleased with the soap. Just give the bottle a shake before use. Let us know what you think.
I have other people tell me that the exact reason that they like it is because it is good on their skin due to no perfumes being added to it. I guess it depends on what it is you are sensitive to. Try it and if you can't use it, pass the ingredients to someone else. You only have a small investment to risk and you may save yourself money and allergic reactions the rest of your life if it works well for you.
Thanks. I hope to do a lot of "Living on the Cheap & Easy" videos. I have had to do it so many times I am starting to get pretty good at it.
Smart people like you are not giving their money away so easily any more. Why pay for mostly water, advertising, transportation and packaging when you can make as good or better for pennies?
What I use is "20 Mule Team Borax". You can usually find it in the detergent isle of grocery stores. But, Wal-Mart doesn't stock it here. I can get it at Kroger. Arm and Hammer Washing Soda is found almost everywhere laundry soap is sold.
Thank you. I think you will like the soap. If you get one box of Borax and 2 boxes of washing soda, it should cost about $10 and will last about forever. It will take up less space to store than one really big jug of detergent. Buy it now and no matter what happens to the economy, you can still have clean clothes!
I like the video and will try this. Also, I love your kitchen.

@gabslake Sodium carbonate dihydrate, Na2(CO3) : 2(H2O) . Also known as sal soda. Hydrated soda ash. Soda crystals.
But there's no really good justif'n for including BOTH washing soda AND borax, rather than just more of one or the other.

Real soap is made from saponified oils, and of course, we prefer them as natural and 'unfooled around with' as possible.

Tip: How not have lumpy soap. Put in 1/2 cup gain detergent. For some reason, it helps the homemade detergent not to gel.
Gain has a gel in it. It helps your homemade
detergent. I did about 5 batches with 1/2 cup Gain in it. I used the Joy Expressions.
It works, no more thick detergent slime.

apatte4975 3 years ago
Well, I don't understand that. However, yes, just add water and it should be fine.

apatte4975 3 years ago
Wow, cannot find washing soda, what else couyld Zi use? Would an oxy clean type substitute washing soda or regular arm and hammer baking soda?
mammo1214 3 years ago
I'm sorry but I don't think there is a good substitute. Is there a Kroger near by?

Nice! Thanks for posting this - some good info here... what bar soap do you prefer to use?
Elaina43 3 years ago
Well, I am very cheap. So, I buy whatever is on sale for the shower and use the bits that get too small for bathing when I make laundry soap. How is that for cheap?
SSanf 3 years ago
Sounds reasonable to me!
You said you thought your recipe for laundry soap gave you a better-cleaning product; I'm curious, do you think there is ANYTHING superior to the store-bought variety? I can't think of what that might be... What are all those "whiteners and brighteners" in detergents? Hey, do you use fabric softener?
OK, now I'm just rambling... But I am curious.
Elaina43 3 years ago
All I can go by is the results I see. I think this is just as good as the store bought detergent. But, that of course is subjective and I guess would vary by user depending on what messes they need to clean. I have no clue what all that stuff they put in the store bought detergents is. However, I am pretty sure the main purpose of it all is to jack the price up.
I still use fabric softener but other people have told me white vinegar in the rinse works as well.
SSanf 3 years ago
Actually, considering the cost and the fact that it leaves absolutely no odor in the clothes and it cleans just fine, I really think this is the better product.
SSanf 3 years ago
I'm gonna try it - I gotta little bar of soap right here!
White Vinegar, however, seems like it would leave a scent behind. (?)
Thanks for all the back and forth with me about this. Happy YouTubing!

Well, I think you are supposed to only use a little of the vinegar. I haven't tried it yet. I think you will be pleased with the soap. Just give the bottle a shake before use. Let us know what you think.

sweet! Is it okay for super sensitive skin? I usually use fragrance free
CindyPantz 3 years ago

Thanks, that was a great and informative video! 5* for sure!

Thank you for thinking so. That is more the type of thing I really wanted to do with this channel. I am still working on developing it.

This is awesome! What is Borax and where do I get it?
AnethSvartalf 3 years ago
What I use is "20 Mule Team Borax". You can usually find it in the detergent isle of grocery stores. But, Wal-Mart doesn't stock it here. I can get it at Kroger. Arm and Hammer Washing Soda is found almost everywhere laundry soap is sold.

Awesome. Thanks.

What a great video!

Thank you. I think you will like the soap. If you get one box of Borax and 2 boxes of washing soda, it should cost about $10 and will last about forever. It will take up less space to store than one really big jug of detergent. Buy it now and no matter what happens to the economy, you can still have clean clothes!

Awesome.I bet you can used any kind of bar soap you want?

Some people swear by Fels Naptha but I use those scraps no one wants in the shower.
