Talk about Jesus teachings is not the same of talk about Catholic teachings. Jesus did not create any religion and his teachings were very similar to Buddha's teachings. I think Anthony realized that and that's why his words are so resonant with Buddhism.
Btw, I think Buddhism and Christianity are not exclusive, they can - and probably should - be combined just as Father Anthony de Mello did it! Buddhism in my opinion is not so much a religion (since it doesnt worship any gods) but rather a life philosophy or a way of living which doesnt contradict Christians teachings!
No offence, but Anthony de Mello is NOT talking about christian prayer, he is basically teaching buddhism here. Waking up, developing full awareness of the present moment, droping your illusions ect. that's all part of buddhist mediation, not christian prayer in general... well, maybe it actually could or should be part of christian prayer too. I am a Christian, and I love this guy! But to me he seems nearer to Buddha's than to Jesus' teachings! He really is near to buddhas enlightenment!
@kingemac Once a Buddhist monk was told the story of Jesus. The monk replied, "That guy is Really close to enlightenment!" You are so correct my friend. And that's probably why A.D. was banished from his own religion, his own calling: because he told the Truth! Jesus, himself, would probably be ex-communicated were he alive today:) Cheers to you who can see the expansive Truth of A.D.'s thoughts!!! Awareness!!!
@kingemac Very true, as a catholic who practices taiji i have been exposed to daoism and buddhism, i believe when anthony de mello is speaking about prayer, it is far beyond the institution of religion but rather speaking about the original source of prayer. I may be catholic but it took buddhism to open up my eyes to my relation with god. in the end were all speaking about the same higher power, its how strong our connection and communication is with our deity
Enlightenment is now now is enlightenment when one realises this fact deeply very deeply then one is awake pure simple life purwe wisdom now is the original and only STETE OF LIFE ,Time is what you think life is eternity or now is what life real-ly is .
about mental programming... we are born, we have life... We are born, we begin dying... So when one only starts living when he starts to die due to AIDS, it 's interesting to observe that he/she is programmed to think that they have just begun to die when he/she has been dying all along, and living too of course! Now, along the same lines, life comes from nothingness, and we die into nothingness, but both life and death are surely from something, therefore something is nothing from something!
One Life is equal to one death! Life and Death are both oneness, both are derived from a singularity; we are all omnipresent, period!!!! God is Omnipotent, and it is so very awesome.
Hmmmm...I'm a Catholic...and Fr. Anthony has some good practical wisdom and psychology, but I don't really think he's talking about prayer here. He never speaks of Grace or Jesus or what God does to the soul. However, there is good practical wisdom in his teaching...but I think it might be lacking. Lot of truth in what he says, though. Didn't catch any error but I might have missed it.
I was wondering the same. I've been re-reading the Sermon on the Mount. You know the part where Jesus says he wants us to be perfect like our Father in Heaven? I think Fr. Anthony saw prayer as a means to do that.
This is what jesus was teaching all along. Awake thou that sleepeth. The guy that is the pope had censored demellos work in the 90's. He said it was a harm to the church.
woah...this is some powerful stuff ..its like having an epiphany

If Anthony were alive and taught at a church, I would actually go to church.
