Definitely one of Billy Joel's finest compositions which is wriiten and performed from the heart, few songs have the ability to stir the emotions as much as this piece. Thanks for uploading and sharing.
Billy's really a great man, makes me cry this song, specially because I've been to Leningrad, you cannot believe how even the younger generations suffered. People who are 25 to 45 now. Or even the youngsters with all these kindergartens, women working, too little love from mum, no feeling of safety with a loving family. Still because of this disgusting state communism where mum and dad both had to work. Really terrible.
Put down your guns hear the silence in the wind , no more the bullet shall rule this land. Only hope in the heart shall proceed , as we wait for the persecuted to be freed.
simply great! but sadly proves only one thing, as long as human race exists, we will be experiencing the war and hate. Billy Joel is so true: what do we keep on fighting for??? really love the song
I remember when this song first came out, & loved it as I still do.
The lyrics are excellent, & go beyond politics which was very brave of Billy Joel coming from a right wing country like America. The Communists are now gone but America still keeps fighting with distant countries, when will they stop ? one day I hope. Lol
I just do not understand how Billy Joel can write such awesome songs, this one and Goodnight Saigon about war and the impact & traumas that it brings and then something like the "The Downeaster Alexa" about a man struggling to support his family. Its just incerdible songwriting. Thanks for sharing this and well said 1955129
@escortRS1600i Agreed. Captain Jack is the dogs bolloks too. Quite surreal it bobs through life, death & drug addiction in a writing style that Joel gets little credit for, with people unfairly concentrating on his populist hits like "Up town Girl" instead.
an absolutly brilliant song that highlights both sides of the cold war from the perspectives of people who grew up during that time. gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it and i can't help but sing along.
He shouldn`t underestimate the sacrifices the US soldiers made in Korea in the 50`s (blast those yellow reds...). South Korea isn`t Florence, but it`s got Starbucks and McDonalds and freedom
this is a real intelligent american citizen praying for worldwide brotherhood. This song really make me cry with both anger for the human stupidity and with hope because in both sides there are people who understand what is the real important thing: a better place for all and everyone. One of my favorite songs of Billy
@1955129 good point. I just returned from south korea...the citizens of south korea see the citizens of north korea as there long suffering brothers and sisters regardless of how north koreas government behaves. Unfortunately peace isnt possible with many of the existing governments.
Yet I should comment that image shown at 0:45 is not from Leningrad but from Stalingrad (the famous square with the playing children statue that survived the Volgograd holocaust).
how can 2 people dislike this song?

Billy Joel is quite possibly, no, most definitely, the best songwriter in the world.

Does anyone know what classical piece inspired the theme at the start?
I can't get that question out of my mind, and It hinders my enjoying this great song...

As I recently wrote to a very good Russian friend of mine, this song is a kind of man's brotherhood anthem.
Long life to the martyr city of Leningrad (Peter)... y larga vida al autor de esta bellísima canción ("a cowboy kid in Macarthy time")!
