after some more digging on the problem, found out this is totally unsupported in Ibex, but might be a hopeful return in Jaunty. bummer :(

I had to enable the screen and graphics by,,
Go to System > Preferences > Main Menu.
Under Applications > Other there you'll find Screen and Graphics. You can just enable it from there.

For all who have no menu-icon/link for that, the tool calls "displayconfig-gtk", just type it in your console.
