If u r unlucky enough to cross a 16ft white or n e big shark while ur spearing the last 2 things u want to do is 1.turn ur back 2.spearing it. This leaves u with no defence (besides ur knife). So if u come across big sharks that get close IF U HAVE 2 poke them in the nose, gills or if really worried for ur life the eye all r very sensative and r very important to there hunting/feeding ability, if they cant hunt they die so they r very catious. DONT POKE IT UNLESSS U HAVE 2, I HAVE NEVA HAD TO

Incredible training and experience to be at that depth for so long with a snorkel. I lived in Greece for a year and did a lot of saltwater snorkeling and spearfishing, but didn't see fish that large in the Mediterrean around Patras. I used to stir up the sand and float upward while the fish came into the cloud for bits of stirred up food. Easy pickings! :)

is because freedivers hold breath in superficie so the air becomes smaller while they dive and bigger while they go up and the biggest that can be is in superficie. because if you hold breath 10 meters underwater and you go up the air makes bigger and can destroy your lungs.
Moketoni i hope you mean SCUBA divers. When you have a Scuba tank and breath in air under the water the air your breathing is is compressed, and if you hold your breath and come up it expands which is extremly dangerous (its called the bends). When spearos/freedivers dive they hold there breath, the volume of air they intake at the surface will still be the same regardless of whether they go down 10-20meters. Samgtr hopes this helps aswell.
Just to clarify, the "bends" is when nitrogen micro-bubbles absorbed into the bloodstream during SCUBA diving expand into actual bubbles from surfacing too quickly.... hence the need for de-comp stops. If you breath compressed air, hold your breath and then surface this causes an air embolism (which is like poping ballons) except its your lungs! Apparently very, very painful.

No i swear it is illegal to spear Ling in Texas. (or cobia as they are called here) They are listed as a gamefish in the Parks and Wildlife book on page 33 and the following page says it is illegal to take all fish listed as gamefish with a spear . Sucks because they are so easy to shoot and come right up to you. And there is like 10 on every rig!

I spearfish in south florida so I'm sure we have different nicknames for fish, as our "jewfish" is actually a goliath grouper, a protected species. Also the parrotfish, I had no idea they were edible, either way regulations prevent us from killing reef fish.

yeah we threatened to take them to court over it after they refused to raplace it. they got it replaced pretty quickly ... and they've sent me a 120cm instead of the 100cm that they broke which was good of them.
Anyone who can dive to 60ft, hold their breath for three minutes while they wait for their eyes to adjust in a cave or wait for the white water and surge to clear all the time dodging sharks & swimming for hours non stop is obviously a cheat and a fairy. What is so good about spending years working out how fish act, learning to stalk and get close to them? Try a real mans sport of sitting on a boat, getting fat and drinking beer while a GPS and sounder tell you exactly where the fish are.

Very cool video, I had a couple of questions though. I spearfish in south florida so I'm sure we have different nicknames for fish, as our "jewfish" is actually a goliath grouper, a protected species. Also the parrotfish, I had no idea they were edible, either way regulations prevent us from killing reef fish.

dude. Jewfish, short for jewel fish (for the glowy dots on their side) are not found anywhere else but Oz. You might have something LIKE it but trust me it aint the same.Epinephelus itajara is yours - Argyrosomus japonicus is ours. The Oz native name is "Mulloway".

Anyone who can dive to 60ft, hold their breath for three minutes while they wait for their eyes to adjust in a cave or wait for the white water and surge to clear all the time dodging sharks & swimming for hours non stop is obviously a cheat and a fairy. What is so good about spending years working out how fish act, learning to stalk and get close to them? Try a real mans sport of sitting on a boat, getting fat and drinking beer while a GPS and sounder tell you exactly where the fish are.

you guys that Don't like spearfishing don't have to watch it if you don't like it, if you have any sensible criticism then OK have your say but if its only Bullh1t keep it to your self. Spearfishing is less wastefull than other forms of fishing and does require some skills and fitness to spear fish. even if some, of the fish on here look to be stupid the diver has the skill to move quietly and slowly or stay down long enough to attract the fishes curiosity

first, spearfishing is the ecologically safe way to fish, we see what we want and get it. second, we have much tighter limits in many places than regulars that use the "begging stick". third, your a douchebag, grow some nuts, let them drop, then you try it out... gosh, looking at comments like yours really reminds me how naive some people are to extreme sports.
