The camera's zoom into the wtc (and surrounding buildings) from a distace. Bridge appears in the background... Both the wtc and the bridge are quite far away from the camera. What do you mean with the towers not being zoomed in with the bridge?

Simply, the size of the bridge is not in right proportion with the Towers in the 911 clips. The bridge should appear as it does in frame 2:32 of the above clip. After all, that shot was taken from the top of the Towers.

Interesting video. Notice how the 911 footage zooms out at 54 seconds. It's obviously a lot further away from the wtc than the other footage. Then go back and pause at 28 seconds, and imagine zooming in on the wtc in the 1996 footage. On a clear day, the bridge should be there.

These are two shots taken from choppers, so the proportion of the Towers vs. the bridge should be the same. They are not even close. And what really matters is the bridge's size in respect to theTowers, not the zoom. If zoomed in, the size of the bridge and Towers should obviously change, but the proportion should not. For this effect to have happened, the camera had to be pulled away while zooming in or vice-versa. Which was it? The chopper seems to be approaching the Towers, so the camera was zoomed out? Your desperation just to explain this is getting ridiculous.

Yes, I still agree, a dolly zoom has not been used, but I used that as an argument to show that proportions can be different if you are shooting from different locations. You don't need to make a video for that to happen, you can also take 2 pictures. Or 2 helicopters and shoot from different locations. One in 1996, and one in 2001 for example.

But as you're driving closer and closer to it, it seems to be getting smaller and smaller. Same thing here. If the camera was right at the towers then the bridge's perspect will be very small compared to it. But since the camera is far from the towers, it makes the towers look smaller in perspective to the bridge.

You can try this. Setup two bottles of the same size. One a couple feet further away from the other. Go up to one with your face next to it, as if you're at it's perspective. Now compare the sizes. The one in front of your face is bigger than the one further away right. Now move away from it and look at the bottles from a further point of view. You'll see their size relation, which is the same. Same here with the bridge and tower.

Thanks for your comments . . however re the moon, this is a well documented effect...called the Ponzo Illusion...and as its name sugguests is an optical iilusion that makes the moon appear big but reality is the same size when not behind buildings... the moon is not a fixed point...thus the creation this illusion is possile, the bridge however is over 6 miles away and has a fixed position, the Ponzo effect can not expain clearly seeing suspension cables with a 36 inch dia. at that distance.

Thanks but no, I'm not referring to the Ponzo illusion. The video was shot with a telephoto lens and displays typical distortion. Check out the "Perspective illusion" page on Wikipedia for an explanation. The page "Perspective distortion" also has some pictures demonstrating how distant objects shot with telephoto can appear closer to the foreground.

Your right Chrysaor. I lived in New York for ten years and as your previous comment said the bridge can be seen from the top of the Empire State Building but is nothing like the scale shown in the network coverage.Well done!

but c'mon, 9/11 was a fairly clear day, you can see the bridge from the Empire State Building. But those videos atop the WTC were taken on a hazy day, you probably would have seen the bridge, had the video been better quality. Why did it seem the bridge was so close to downtown? The helicoper was far far away from the WTC, I'd say in midtown, the camera was heavily zoomed in into the towers. This perspective makes the bridge look much closer than it is.

thanks dc . .. . re the 911 footage, Im glad you said the bridge looked much closer than it is...because it did look much closer than it is ...between 4x and 8x depending on channel and time. . . however regardless of perpective ....if the towers are in the forground of the shot then we know that we are no closer than six miles from the bridge...the bridge is visable( as said in the vid) but nothing like the size shown on 9/11 and it would have been lost in the distance behind the smoke ...

Quite superb vid - simple and to the point.

In fact, CNN decided to wash out the background (in a grey haze) altogether...

I almost feel sorry for that nerdy chap who came up with the idea of adding a backdrop-layer to the Manhattan 'chopper'shots for more ...realism. Imagine the spanking he endured ?

They had to bring the "sky" closer to ease the fakery process, much easier to insert (and erase ie helicopters) objects onto a blue background than on top of a New York landscape with all the tall buildings! As much of it was to shot from a fake helicopter perspective!
