You do realize that the data is still largely recoverable, right? Maybe not to the average computer tech, but definitely by law enforcement agencies. When I destroyed my hard drive, I sanded down and then smashed the platters up and broke them into tiny fragments. I then scattered those fragments among different trash bags over the course of two months. Anyone who recovers the data from my hard drive deserves to steal my identity.
Hard drives are actually quite tough. When they're unpowered, the read heads are safely off the platters, so you won't get any head crashes during hard impacts. Modern drives also have G-force sensors on them that snap the heads away if they detect blunt force trauma while turned on.
Chances are, if you clean them up and dry them out, the data on the drive can still be salvaged. You really need a powerful degausser or physical destruction of the platters to guarantee the data is destroyed.
yea water wont kill the data. the drive is sealed and the disks still have the data on them. the diaper will only make the drive stinky. the wood chips and throwing isn't going to do it either. In fact i bet i could recover the data from those disks with the right equipment. You need to open it up and smash the actual platter with a hammer.
probobly 90% of the data's still on there because you hit it sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lightly
You haven't erased any data doing so :D Erasing an hard drive it's really easier: put it next to a big magnet (for example a speaker's magnet) for some minutes, and voilà, all data erased forever. Or more funny, while they are powered on, open the casing and begin to scratch the disk's surface with a screwdriver. Do this for every platter and have fun :P
Fire beats water in this situation!

Dropping two feet onto wood chips isn't going to do anything......try blending it!

just delete the files and format c:\ .. no one cares, and no one will try to recover them... unless you're ossama ben laden

@iRouRoui This software forthose who have the data which must not be known by others. for example, FBI.
MiniTool Drive Wipe, FREE--MiniTool Drive Wipe could destroy all information in your chosen disks safely and permanently.
Once data erased by MiniTool Drive Wipe, the data will not be able to recover by any data recovery software
t can ensure the security of your private and unwanted data and prevent someone from recovering your data.

magnets are helpful in this situation
pariah0 2 years ago
@pariah0 No not even magnets. Unless you put it through an MRI or something...
You have to open the drive and smash the platters.

i must have been thinking of something else then.
well thanks for clearing that up.
