I think if you look at the dozens of mario games out there, the second one isn't lacking that much in the mario department compared to say, oh, mario tennis, or dr. mario.

Bowser isn't in the second one. It's some crazy fat thing that controls the dream world Mario is trapped in. o.o

I don't recall any goombas and your only real power up is a potion that gives you an extra hp heart for that level. And main reason why mario and his friends are the stars of the Nintendo sport games is because they are popular, as shown when the mario kart series kicked in awhile back. Plus Nintendo is almost all platform for their better games.

Nintendo did this, because they thought Japan's Super Mario Bros 2 was too challenging to be released in America, but when it was seen in America, Nintendo tried to pass Japan's Super Mario Bros 2 of as some game called Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels.
