A disappointing number of the responses to my comment can be summarized as "If we hadn't done it, somebody else would have done worse". I submit that's not a very encouraging basis for moral behavior. True, what's done is done, but at least we can hopefully learn from our mistakes. But we can't do even that unless we study history. Read about the history of Hawai'i. 20% of the population died from diseases brought by Europeans. Read about the Bayonet Constitution, and the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani in 1893 by white business leaders and US marines. It's hard to be proud to be an American when the US did so many things like this in its past. Our greatness was bought with the blood and suffering of others. President Clinton issued an apology on the 100th anniversary of the overthrow. Like it means anything at all.

@Yankpats sorry, can't let this slide. Capitalism is private individuals peacefully negotiating business. It has nothing to do with colonialism through force by an aggressive State. The State's only legitimate role is to protect individuals from force and theft, not to initiate it. And I don't think we can justify an immoral act by assuming that if we hadn't, someone else would have. Japan would have to answer for their own crimes.

This may tick people off but to me the only way to correct the mistakes of the past is to admit they happened and rather than the government trying to just push it aside they need to admit that basically the US government used underhanded tactics to conquer a lot of what is today USA.
