  • was number 1 when i was born

  • Average...I think NOT ...she has a brilliant voice... bloody brilliant ....

  • @beans1600 THATS WICKED

  • Thanks for posting this. It reminds me of my first 'proper' girlfriend, who sang it in our church hall.

  • Great voice for her age, and such feeling. She is singing Gospel nowadays, I may go to see her at the local Chapel, though I'm a Humanist.

  • she sounds so mature, I think she was only 14

  • Ahh. My first 45 was this record, and it's still in the loft. Got them all on cd's though. This gives my age away. Still in love with Helen, but she doesn't know it.

  • a great song and one of the few to tackle un requited love...first heard this in 1976 when i got my first radio, still makes me cry...wish i had told elaine...not seen her since 1979..heart still broken

  • thank you helen your voice brings the memories of my younger days. I was 9 years old then. Voice are made to bring back so many things.. You dont know how much you mean a lot to people who are 60 years old. But do you know whenever we play this song to retirees in old folk home..They remember the good, bad, sweet, bitter and forgive ALL. Your voice is a good therapy for people who have forgotten and then recall past life and love peacefully. May God bless you.

  • my gosh helen shapiro what memories this brings back......

  • @rustygg1 me too 6o s xx

  • I could not disagree more with discovery781. This lady has a fantastic and rather unique voice . Helen Shapiro was a singing sensation and remains so today.

  • @780special AGREED. When I played this song at the station, I got great comments.

  • @780special Agree with you entirely; she was 14 when this was recorded; that was some voice

  • ive heard way better singers

  • @discovery781 So have I but not when they were 14

  • she does nothing for me as a vocalist

  • @discovery781 What!

  • @tony13a come on now whitney or celine shes not....as a vocalist shes incredibly average

  • @discovery781 I've made no comment about her as a vocalist,i don't know what you're on about.

  • @discovery781 Average, are you joking; she was 14 years old when this was recordedl; that voice is astonishing

  • @discovery781 You need help

  • at the time I never realised how good she is, she is unique. A true legend

  • Can you just imagine, a duet with Helen Shapiro and Karen Carpenter,,,WOW!!!

  • How I love the broken heart classics....had this playing when I got my heart broken so long ago...still love her voice and the songs words ......say no more

  • What a fantastic voice

  • great voice,beore her time,should have been a SUPERSTAR

  • Happy days, along with her other hits of that era.

  • OMG her voice still gives me goosebumps, just like when I was a teenager. Brings back so many memories.

  • one difference helens still alive

  • great voice. great song. has anyone else noticed the resemblance between helen and amy winehouse. both great talents.

  • @lesj55555 Yes, I agree, both amazing singers!

  • Back in the days when lyrics had a meaning to them... 'i would tell you if i believed that you might care someday, but until then i'll never give this away, so a secret it must stay'... that has to be one of my favourite lyrics of all time, compare it to the crap served nowadays... 'i kissed a girl and i liked it tasted up her cherry chapstick'...

  • Great song, tears in my eyes. Times go by too fast.

  • What a great voice, UNKNOWN IN NORTH AMERICA ! What a shame !

  • She came over to Japan. I remember seeng a photo of her and Mieko Hirota, Japan's Helen Shapiro, standing side by side. Is that 1962 or 1963? Anyway it was a long time ago!

  • Some days ago I heard myself singing this song. I have just heard Ms Helen Shapiro sing this song thru YouTube after so many years. The song was wonderful. I will never get tired of this song. The song brings me back to those days when I was a high school student. I still love this song immensely.

  • Ifotovibpl

  • I had not heard this song since the 60's. Funny we learnt it with our english teacher (i'm french) and I was 16 yrs old by then !! Unfortunately Helen Shapiro was not known in France what a shame she had such a beautiful voice !

  • this song takes me back to the fantasic 60s lets have more

  • beautiful song and voice

  • what a voice and such a good song it will live on forever

  • Wonderful Helen Shapiro still sings at special evenings when she tells the story of her journey to faith. Don't miss these - even if you have no particular faith there is something for everyone to learn and appreciate.

  • Who could not Like Helen Shapiro? She has such a great voice,

    The Greatest... Sir David

  • Sluchalem kilka razy podrzad . Ciarki ...Pieknie.

  • Takes me back to my teenage years. Did anyone see Helen in Oliver as Nancy. She was fantastic. Thanks for posting.

  • @Beeky633 I have a childhood memory of meeting Helen backstage and getting her autograph after seeing Oliver. It was the early 80s, I was only about 7 I think. I can't remember much of the show but I clearly remember meeting her. :-)

  • Fabulous voice, the clarity. Compare that to some of the tripe from so called girl bands today

  • This song was 50 years ago no.10 in the world charts #helen #shapiro

  • Najpiękniejsze czasy,najpiękniejsze lata.

  • I love you Helen.

  • Simply marvellous !!!!!!!!!

  • What a fab voice

  • @PURPLEBEATTIE1 This brings back memories, my word, I remember Helen Shapiro from my era in the 60's !

Wonder what she is doing now ?

  • @josparkes1 The best Female singer ever to grace the UK Pop scene. Her voice is truly amazing. With the right management, I am sure, she could have taken the USA by storm in the 60s.

I am sure she is still performing to this day, and at last, becoming more loved now in the States,as she is, through the rest of the world. In the eighties this young beautiful Jewish girl gave her heart to Jesus. She now also sings for the Lord and helps others come to Christ through her Testament.

  • @goneoverboard2 She was indeed a very lovely voice, and I am sure she is dong well right now, and it is lovely to find that she has a faith and I am thrilled to hear that, that's wonderful.

    Great stuff indeed !

  • Sa voix chaleureuse a bercé mon adolescence, issue d'un juke-box du bistrot d'à côté... Inoubliable !

  • Still love her music

  • Englands finest

  • Amy Crackhouse Rest in Pieces. Long live Helen!

  • Alma, when she was young, reminds me of Amy Winehouse, both in her looks and the timbre of her voice.

  • @theGeraldStephen..You are right, she was only 14, amazing!

  • Brilliant.

  • My dad did session work with Helen shapiro in the 60s quite a few times, and said if she thought it wasn't right they all had to do it again until she was satisfied.

  • @1.54 is that Bernie Winters ???

  • @Dean66Essex Yes it is Bernie Winters. Some of the stills in this vid come from the 1962 film Play it Cool, which starred Helen, Billy Fury and Bobby Vee. It was produced by Michael Winner.

  • @Dean66Essex Sorry, that should have read directed by Michael Winner.

  • @Dean66Essex Yep, Bernie Winters.

  • I'm enjoying a Helen rebirth and can only say this lady should have been at the top even now! No sound effects needed for her talent! So glad she is still doing shows albeit gospel outreach. She is a great ambassador for Jesus. ;0)

  • i agee copeland ,they can't match this quality to-day with all their electronic trickery.one thing puzzles me though.if helen was born in 1946 then she could only have been 14 when she went into abbey road in the spring of 1961.any thoughts anyone? lucky we are anyway to have the chance to relive it all.electronics not all bad then but no replacement for human talent, heart and spirit.well done helen this is beautiful today after 40 years .if it didn't fade and fail by now it's made it !

  • Beautiful girl beautiful singer. Will buy her cd later.

  • A totally unique and unmistakable voice. The overtones and resonance in those vocal chords is just amazing.

  • Brilliant vocalist from the 60's. I saw her live in South Africa years ago-what a power house at 16. Remember the theatre going dark as they introduced her-all you heard was this big booming voice envelope the packed house, while she was still standing in the wings. She walked out on to the stage to such huge applause. Amazing.

  • 懐かしくて涙が出そう。よく歌ってました、この曲。何もかも時代を感じます。あまりに昔で、前世の記憶みたいにも感じてしまいます。その前世の自分が一瞬蘇ります。一緒に歌ってしまいますね。

  • Heard a girl singing this onstage in our local church hall. We were both 15 at the time, and we became a 'serious' item - for all of 6 months.

  • a touch of magic about this song, funny after the Beatles and The Stones a lot of this early stuff was overlooked, so many memories attached to this ahhh

  • Merveilleux, Dalida la chantait majestueusement, elle aussi...

  • This is a song which helped to brush up my J'English at heigh-school age although teachers were not so happy !

  • REMINDS ME OF MY EARLY CHILD HOOD WHEN EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE BETTER THAN IT IS NOW GREAT SONG AND REALLY WELL PERFORMED

  • X Factor-- 'They don't know'!

  • this is a top singer x factor ear your heart out

  • QUE LINDA CANCION....QUE LINDA VOZ...ME ENCANTA....

  • sucks u in o so gorgeous

  • 15 people just don't know.

  • I grew up with this song. It takes me back in time (56 now)

  • Dear Helen, thank you for beautiful song

  • fabidoo

  • @copewood1939 iam 24 and could not agree more with you x factor and britans got talent could not put a scratch on helen

  • Wonderfull voice....Cem

  • I remember listening to this on UK radio in the early sixties. Great voice, great song!

  • great video. CARL

  • Nice Voice!

  • Can you belive that voice was 14 years old ? Sublime raw talent .

  • she's a bit before my time, but i stumbled across her stuff while delving for oldies...i think I've heard most of her discography by now, and have yet to encounter a stinker. great stuff.

  • i know helen shapiro, she lives at the bottom of my road. it's lovely in the morning to hear her practicing her songs as i walk past her house. you can hear her in her room, it's amazing & so is she, <3<3 xxxx.

  • @WALRU1I if you can sing better lets hear you !!! Helen Shapiro is a great tallented singer even now

  • @helenkful That's infantile of you.Whether i can sing or not has no bearing on my right to comment upon the voice of Ms. Shapiro. What are you, a Stalinist!

  • @LilMissSexxiieeh She really lives near you ?

  • Oh yes she did try to appeal to older audiences. On her appearance on "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" she sang standards. Certainly not what young audiences wanted to hear. She wasn't alone. There were other performers who thought that they had to appeal to older adiences.

  • trop beau.;

  • Gorgeous

  • hello je la prefere en anglais que part dalida mais bon chacun sé gout

  • Helen faded because she tried to appeal to older audiences and by doing this lost her teenage fan base...no she didn't....she appeared on the same concert bill as The Beatles (she was top of the bill), and the Beatles were on second. All the way through her singing the crowd were screaming for the Beatles. The End!

  • just released (07/02/2011) from EMI the ultimate 3 cd album 90 tracks (its got every helen song from the 60s), i ordered it from amazon £6.99 or you can download in MP3 the same 3 cds for £5.99

  • This was no1 the day is born a million years ago !

  • Gosh how i've missed her.beautiful voice

  • Gosh how i've missed her.

  • Fabulous singer. There was ony Helen Shapiro and Sylvia Sands in Britain. And Helen had the the better vocal range and was a wonderful interpreter of lyrics. Unfortunately, her recordings of this period ae marred by the overkill of the Norrie Paramour "Strings". Helen faded because she tried to appeal to older audiences and by doing this lost her teenage fan base. A great pity

  • Childhood memorys Mwha xxx

  • One of the greatest songs of the 60's sung by one of the finest female voices ever....wonderful. Haunting delivery which makes you shiver just listening to it. And to think she was only 14 at the time of recording - amazing!

  • Gorgeous love this tune from wee Helen, great wee singer she was

  • favorite song of her and "cry my heart" out two faves of her

  • The first record I ever bought. I was 8.

  • Always had a soft spot for female singers with powerful voices. Helen is absolutely one of these.

  • Comment removed

  • SUPERB

  • i FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG IT MAKES ME HARD

  • The delivery of this song is so haunting it sends shivers down my spine. Amazing to think she was only fourteen when recording it. As with each of the first four songs she recorded its totally memorable. The depth and power of her voice is quite breathtaking. Nobody ever sang with that kind of voice in any era of pop music. Totally unique and unforgetable Helen Shapiro forever.

  • and .chelsea radford. did not,

  • i wonder if mark bolan was in the photo .he went to that school.

  • Even though I am almost 65 now her voice makes me melt she is awsome.

  • @Mzpenndragon You are not wrong. A beautiful voice and wonderful singer, and sooo young.

  • Her voice on this (she was only 15) was astonishing, so mature and emotional. She remains one of the UK's greatest-ever female pop stars. Such a sad, wistful song, you can hear the longing in her voice, and you just want to reach out and give her a big hug. Thanks for posting this - maybe a new generation will realise just what a great singer we had in Helen.

  • united states' and rest of the world, missed an oppitunity to visit a country that has allways been top of the class for music/ culture/ actors/etc,etc, why do you think everyone would like to live hear, it's called the leaning process, and it's not to screw the benefit system, britains are just so good at doing anything, and if it is something special, a geordie will be involved

  • The United States missed an opportunity to discover this extremely talented British Girl from north London. Thank God we can hear her now on you tube!

  • great girl .good

  • I thought she was brilliant!!!

  • That voice would wipe the floor with everything we get today on X Factor.

  • @copewood1939 Your so right , these so called girl bands have not got any singer that can come close to this girl, and she didnt have to dance about half naked to look and sound good.

  • @copewood1939

that statement is true before the autotuning

how sad people are this days

no real talent like Helen Shapiro

  • @copewood1939

100% agree with you!! Compared to that whining Leona Lewis or Alexander Burk-Face, dear Helen simply out shines them in every aspect.

  • le parfum des années soixante

  • SEPTEMBER 28...HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE UK'S GREATEST SINGER EVER...HELEN SHAPIRO...

    :)

  • @LaVerne37

  • @LaVerne37 Kathy Kirby?

  • @LaVerne37 I just love Helen, I've told the wife I'll leave her tomorrow for Helen!

  • rip mum was her day

  • I enjoy her singing very much. And this is a lovely tune. THANK YOU so very much for posting it! :)

  • so sexy

  • sUCH AN AMAZING VOICE THAT BRINGS ME BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD DAYS IN MANCHESTER....THANKS FOR POSTING.

  • How come Jack Charlton looks three times bigger than her at 0:40?

  • @Splazz 'Jack Charlton' at 0.40 is John Schroeder who co-wrote this song.

  • This is class!

  • Everything Helen has ever sang is brill ! She should be made a Dame, cheers Jim.

  • If only music was like this now, all these years and we can still sing to it, they don`t make them like this any more , mores the pity, we are lucky if we can tell what is being sung with most of todays music.

  • Lovely!

  • Helen Shapiro, I would like to thank you for all the memories you have given this American man. Regards: Henry W. Pope, Putnam Valley, New york

  • I remember the juke box's in the coffe bars, playing this over and over. What brilliant days.

  • @TheDavidjoy - I feel the same way about this beautiful song by the very talented Helen Shapiro. I can also listen to this song over and over. She has an absolutely magnificent voice. I wonder if she still sings. I wish she had an e - mail address where I could write to her. Her other song " I Don't Care " is also great. Both of those songs should have been top 10 hits for her in the United States. It is so hard to believe that she was only successful in Great Britain.

  • @50s60steenidols

It is so sad that the British public let her down and went out and bought records by the new Mersey sound,The Beatles,Gerry and the Pacemakers and so on.Groups became more fashionable it seems.

  • Golden age of music

  • This is class

  • see AMY WINEHOUSE this is proper singing!

  • @susieboo74

Well blow me over Amy Whitehouse is not one of your favorites,HELEN SHAPIRO is though I see!

  • @BEATLE1947 my mum is a huge fan and introduced me to some very cool 60s music

  • @susieboo74 ...who is amy winewarehouse???????????

  • @tonyhgv looooooooooooooooooooooooool! amy winewarehouse!

  • @tonyhgv hahahah, yes so true, this is proper music isn`t it, these songs had meaning in the words.

  • @rosechris48 ...yes i feel sorry for the people on here that missed that 60s era,the music was just fantastic,it was a great time to be a teenager...but at least the music has survived and stood the test of time and my £5 a week wages at 15 went a long way...lol

  • @tonyhgv Yes, I agree I feel sorry for anyone who was not a teenager in the 60`s too, it was wonderful. You got 2s 6d more than me, I had £4.17s 6d. for my wages but as you said, it did go a long way.

  • @rosechris48 That was good money. I started work August 1960,as an apprentice engineer for the princely sum of £1- 10 shillings a week.

  • @old65rocker cor blimey, you can`t imagine it now can you?

  • Comment removed

  • @rosechris48 No not at all.

  • Helen got paid one farthing per track, two tracks on one single.Four farthings made one penny, for two singles sold, Helen made one penny, 240 pennies made one pound. So Helen had to sell 480 singles to receive one pound. When she had sold a million records she received £2,080, very generous of E.M.I. Might I add that in my view she was one of the BEST female singers we HAVE, still on the go now.Helen would have been an international star in the sixties with the RIGHT management, regards,David.

  • @BEATLE1947 That's disgusting i'm glad EMI are in trouble now they have ripped off so many people.

  • @BEATLE1947 I very much doubt if other British record companies were any more generous than EMI. In the 1960s many artists were ripped off by record companies and even by the artists' own managements. Producer George Martin left EMI's employment because he was earning so little for masterminding the Beatles' recording careers.

  • There will never be a time like the early 1960's; I wish everyone could have spent just a few minutes being there. It just felt awesome back then. Helens music sets that feeling in stone.

  • @trailboyus66 these were wonderful years, my friend and I often sit and talk about these time, oh how I wish we could go back in time.

  • I was a teenager when Helen sang all her fantastic hits...we didn't know what she looked like in those days.....wow...weren't we missing something!!!
