What it sounds like at this speed is a John Lennon song + backing and much less a Beatles song. Also makes me think it was sped up first and then worked on. Shame really. Best way to hear Real Love is to rip the 6 tracks from the 5.1 mix on the DVD and do an OOPS on channels 1&2 and 5&6: you get almost everything minus the Lennon cassette. Great harmonies revealed.

I clicked on "not spam" just in case, maybe the comment will be unhidden.
also, there is a video of the backing track without john's track on youtube, and guess what, somebody overdubber the lennon anthology take on it!
@kainthevampireduck it sounds a lot better, I wish yoko gave that track to them, and the raw sound of the backing tack sounds a lot more beatlish than the overproduced "traveling wilburies-esque" sound made by jeff lynn.
Do you know what, it's loads better this way, pure pennon and makes a better song, I love Macca, George and Ringo, but this is the way its supposed to be, Thank You...
They sped it up for several reasons. The most important one was probably due to the use of Lennon's recording. The quality of the take they ended up using was terrible and had to be modified heavily just to make it workable. Lennon was just recording a demo and wasn't using a metronome so the take ended up having to be spliced and certain parts sped up in order to match a strict tempo. Plus, the other Beatles' voices have aged and it would sound weird to have younger John singing with older Paul
@loserbrett I wish yoko gave them the same take that's on lennon anthology, it sounds better.
I understand the technical problems with the track, but they turned the "speed up" knot too far to the right, a middle ground between the original pitch and the final pitch could have been nice, my point is basically "I wish you could crearly tell it's john's voice without having to tamper with the song".
@kainthevampireduck Of course it sounds like John! John sped up his vocal in the Beatle days plenty of times. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Strawberry Fields (Takes 1, and 26), the Past Masters Across the Universe, probably the backing vocals on Lovely Rita, definitely Magical Mystery Tour's backing vocals
Do you think that there's the slightest chance that they knew what they were doing and released it the way they wanted it?? Sometimes 'fans' forget that we're actually voyeurs. You're not IN THE BAND
@667jaymz I don't think this was a band thing, they did weird stuff with their voices on their records, but the speeding up on this song went so far that it makes me thing it was a producer's thing or a mistake, somebody took the wrong track and sent it for pressing the records, or something like that. seriously, the final speeded up version is unlistenable, it sounds more like yoko screaming than john :/
I'm not a fan of "illegaly downloaded" music but, considering that this is your version. it's an exception. They should make and anthology about the anthology album :P
@HaifischDoktor it could be a good idea, a remake or remaster or whatever keeping the pitch and of course, keeping george's guitar, they can use the same tracks for george and I bet they have more takes or whatever.
there's a raw mix of the backing track out there that sounds perfect, it should have been mixed that way, the drums sound more natural, you can hear an electric distorted guitar besides the slide lead guitar, and it sounds more beatlish and less "jeff-lynnish"
@cesarmanuel51 but it doesn't sound speeded up, you can tell it's john singing :)
if you don't like the oversaturated mix, there is a copy of the video clip where for some reason, the mix is different, john's voice is louder and there is more "space" between the instruments so everything sounds more clear, I like it a lot. search for watch?v=glUFjjkYuAk
(youtube won't let me paste the full link, just add that after the .com/ in the adress bar)
@foreverabeatlesfan I'm thankful that they released new songs, but every time I listen to the official anthology version I find the voices annoying like alvin and the chipmunks, and it's a shame, I'm like "WHHHYYYYYYYYYYY, YOU WERE SO CLOSE TO RELEASE A PERFECT VERSION OF A WONDERFUL SONG BUT YOU HAD TO WASTE THE OPPORTUNITY, IT COULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER GREAT CLASSIC, A BIG HIT, BUT THE HIGH PITCHED VOICES MAKE IT BARELY PLAYABLE EITHER ON THE RADIO OR TV OR WHATEVER!!! WHHYYYYYYYYY?!!!!!!"
@foreverabeatlesfan That's not the problem, the problem is the pitch. In "When I'm Sixty-Four," you could still tell it is paul, but in "Real Love" it is a bit hard to tell
@Cnat123 I wish they kept it this way, I mean, if I can do it with the regular cd and a home computer, they can do it ten times better with studio technology and using the isolated tracks for the mix.
Thank you... I've felt something wasn't 'right' with the issued version... somehow, it didn't have the right feel... this adjustment, and really that's all it is, makes the song sound more... sweet and real to my ears... Maybe it's time to pigeon-hole the producers and find out the whys of the original speed being altered.
Very interesting. As much as I am a Beatles Fan I never realized that the released version was actually spead up that much. A very noticable difference now that I listen to both versions.
Excellent work! Personally, I like every version of this song from the acoustic demo to the "Ok. start over, silly boy" piano demo & including the "Official" Beatles version - I'll listen to all of them at times depending on my mood. But to me nothing captures the true essence of Real Love more than picturing John sitting in his living room alone, sitting at his piano, playing just to himself. Finally happy & content with his life as this gem floats out of him leaving us to wonder, what if.....
@animepwn3r yeah, this song, specially at its original pitch with john's real voice, is something special, it reachs my heart or soul or whatever you may call it.
I really wish all the Beatles fans all over the world could do something to pressure EMI so they re-relase it officially at its right pitch so we can listen to them playing the song as it was supposed to be in the first place
@kainthevampireduck It's not up to EMI to do that - Only The Beatles themselves can authorize a new Beatles release, which is what it would be if it's different. EMI can only release previously released music by them without their permission.
if you talk about the sound quality or the speeding up stuff, I think they went too far with the speeding up and they ruined john's voice, so, in order to listen to the actual song, you must listen to it at its original pitch.
@kainthevampireduck Then again, there ARE Beatles songs that don't have all four of them on it (Back in the USSR - no Ringo ; Ballad of John and Joko - no Ringo or George, etc.)
@LODGE4444 yeah, there's a kinda grey area.... but if a song with only two of them can be officially credited to The Beatles, there shouldn't be dobut about a song with the four of them, even if paul george and ringo did their tracks while john "had gone for a tea" :)
@DesmondMead yep, it's amazing, both this one and free as a bird are very special, the first new beatles songs in a lot of time....... I remember back in 95/96 all the exitement about it......... and I can dream of what it would have been like to live the 60s and having been there for the beatlemania and when they kept releasing new singles and albums all the time.
i applaud u sir, well done, well done - hate the released versions of f.a.a.b and real love there crap mixes - with faab there is too much emphasis on all 4 members contributing to the song and it over killed it , and real love being sped up , they were both over produced , all they both needed was a bit of mastering, guitar added and some reverb !!
The way I understood it is that the track was mixed using analog tapes, meaning it would be much harder to speed up AND pitch down a track since it would have required digital manipulation, which the band did not want to do as they felt that it would have been cheating. Also, you can't get ADT from digital, which is another reason why all the Anthologies are mixed by analog tapes.
I love how this sounds. But one must keep in mind the reason the pitch and speed was altered. The quality of the demo was terrible. The version given to the remaining Beatles was not the beautiful version that would appear on Johns later compilations. John had double tracked his vocal on the cassette and his vocals didn't match very well. Altering the speed helped mask that. But also John did alter pitch and speeds on songs with the Beatles so it does fit.
I have a turntable which gives you the ability to change speeds with a dial, gradually. The LP, RARITIES (US release) contains the version of "Across The Universe" featuring the sound of ducks splashing out of the water at the start and back in at the end. John's vocal is sped up in much the way it is on "Real Love." So I often play it at something like 28 rpm and it sounds good. As does your slowed-down REAL LOVE video.
I like the "let it be" version a lot more because the track is not speeded up and it sounds more like john there.
I had a turntable once that was so over-used that it played the records slower, I guess the drive needed some adjustements. It was weird and interesting to listen to some songs slowed down, like "I'm only sleeping" or "lucy in the sky with diamonds".
They only sped it up because they liked it that way, and the pitch change is only because they analogue equipment instead of digital to make it sound more 'authentic.'
The sped-up version isn't 'ruined' exactly - John Lennon used to frequently play with the pitch of his voice in the 60's Beatles tracks just because he liked the different tones it would create.
However this is pretty cool to hear. Thanks for the effort!
I think they went too far with this one, one thing is to speed it up a little bit but keeping the voice "recognizable", but the official version sounds like if it was a 33rpm record played at 45rpm.
I love what you did with this!!! I still like the sped-up version too, cus that was one of the first Beatles songs i listened to. I actually like all the versions of Real Love, it's a great song either way.
I also apologies about my poor choice of words. What I meant to say was that you could ajust your voice to be high or low pitched without changing the key. Sry :)
Yeh. I dissagree with speeding up the demo too. . I like the the tempo rate but not the pitch. I was thinking of doing this. One a saw a micraphone set up so you can change the way your voice sounds. Really high pitched or really low pitched. I was thinking that maby you could feed the track through a studio machine and just choose the pitch that sounds the best. Sorry I don't have a name for it.
