The useless banterings of a rhetorician hard at work, or valuable assets to a society that begs for wordsmithing? What, indeed, do we believe to be the true definition of the American Dream? Perhaps I have the answers, perhaps not. Either way, this topic is opened for discussion in my new video.
And Mark Twain was very inspirational to me also. Love that Wolfe quoted that. Love the banana daq story. Great stuff. Long live rebellion! (not sure of spelling...)
To be able to write stuff is so amazing. I am jealous of these guys. Wolfe and Thompson. Both so amazing. Very Inspirational. Its nice to live in a world with these two crazy dudes.
I really do not understand Tom Wolfe. He was/is a huge George W Bush supporter, has never done a drug or drank alcohol in his life yet wrote the "electric kool aid acid test" and loves Hunter S. Thompson. I guess he Tom is your typical republican :)
There are 2 types of HST fan: those who admire his lifestyle & those who admire his writing.
Whenever I've had anything to do with the 1st type, I feel ashamed & appalled to be associated with them. They are usually dumb adolescents of all ages who conceal their brains in their acne - so naturally their brains leak like puss. They think this is cool, that Hunter would approve of their goofy ignorance.
HST tolerated them, mostly, & the local Sheriff protected him from them.
I think you're glossing over those who misunderstand his lifestyle. While I agree that Hunter's lifestyle isn't for the every man to emmulate, he's been a bit of a role model for myself as a pro writer.
It goes past his tone, which is why it isn't necessary just admiring writer. but rather the way he approached work and the act of producing material.
@jodhpurs A lot of Hunters writing was about his lifestyle, and I personally read writers who I relate to on a personal level. What is good writing if you cant relate to it? Most authors who people consider the worlds greatest like Tolstoy etc I cant stand, because I cant relate to it, its not my life. Thompsons lifestyle is a bit more similar to my own (not so much these days). When I read, watch films and listen to music I want to relate to what that art is saying,
@jodhpurs what about those who admire both? I gotta say, I am an adolescent who you speak so scathingly of (im 15) but I think that his writing and his lifestyle were inexorably linked, both as crazy as the other. Admireing someone because they did a lot of drugs and shouted is stupid, but when they turn that shouting and drugs and everything and turn it into great art AS WELL then you kinda have to admire the whole package.
So quick to judge on the internet. Please, hop down off your cross and tell us all how we should live. How about the people who can respect how he lived and learn from his writing styles? From your logic I can assume all drug using adolescents are dumb and brains "leak like puss." Your presumptuousness is the exact kind of ignorance Thompson combated, in addition to being the polar opposite of how he lived.
The 2nd type of fan is the only kind worth talking to. It's very important to ignore the rest: it discourages them from breeding.
That might sound elitist, but all I'm really saying is that the 1st fan type (& they swarm all over sites like YouTube) should be extermintaed. That's all I'm saying.
his writing is against the current, more honest than you, mirrors the feelings of possibly the majority of people period and its darkly hilarious and socialy defiant but if you think this is utopia you havent left your estate in a while and to enjoy thompson you will be condemned in certain peoples judgement .but fuc em
fuck off, if more people listen to Chomsky instead of you maybe a father wouldn't have hold his daughter with half her head blown off. For what, childish men how think they own the world. You're a piece of shit my friend.
everybody has the right to consume whatever substances they choose. he never hurt anybody but himself and that's his choice. it does not take away from his decency in any way; he is still a good person. much more of a (better) person, than an arrogant, judgemental bigot like yourself.
I totally agree, SensimillaLove, that everybody has the right to consume whatever substances they choose. But I find it curious that Thompson appears to have become the darling of what today passes as the Academic Establishment. That is, I assume, where you people learned to revere Thompson. Your community college literature instructors, maybe? If not, how on earth did you ever hear of him? Reading Rolling Stone? I'm curious.
i haven't gone to college yet, im still considering if i even want to, and i dont think i ever heard a thing about hunter thompson in any highschool classes. i learned about him by chance; i picked up his first novel, the Rum Diaries, with no idea who Hunter S. Thompson was. his sporadic writing style and the unfaltering directness in his words captivated me. naturally i moved on to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas after that, and i was hooked. he was and forever is Doctor Gonzo, a true genius.
@megaswenson The same way you find most great writers, you simply stumble upon them. I've never come across Thompson in any of my academic studies, yet I discovered him, Bukowski, Kerouac, Hemingway, Ben Elton; either by people coming up and yelling "This is great, you have to read this!" or by quietly flicking through interesting synopses in an old bookstore. Much the same way as most people discover Dylan, Zevon, The Rolling Stones, whatever. It just happens.
@IGLOOGREENHOUSE And you are a troll. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, except you. You probably should get off Yotube and continue chronically masturbating to child porn.
If you knew much about him you would understand his gonzo style of writing is to be part of the story, hence his life, lifestyle, outlook and accomplishments are as symbolic and as much as part of his work as the writing itself. His character, writings, lifestyle, etc are all part and parcel of a complex statement about freedom, government, ignorance, and greed.
Perhaps, but I think there is a difference in his written work and his "lifestyle." After a while HST became a parody of himself and a lot of critics agree, myself included, that his writing suffered as a result. Almost everything he wrote after 1972 is garbage. In the end all that's left is his writing, and his lifestyle and antics weren't much more than topics.
While you are correct that his reputation overshadowed his writing and made it suffer, I still stand that his lifestyle was part and parcel of his writing, even more so after that point. HIs antics may have only been topics, but topics in his writing that reflected his general sentiments towards freedom, life in america, etc. In the end, all thats left isn't just his writing, because his reputation overshadowing it is what started this debate. No one will read him without thinking of his life.
TRYING to 'outbrain', kronik191? "...so-called intellect..."? I don't remember referencing my intellect. Generally, that's done FOR me, as has apparently happened here. Thanks for the validation.
Considering that ratings of 'superiority' are entirely dependent upon subjective standards, I imagine that it would be impossible for anyone to be 'fooled' regarding another person's superiority. Depending on how (or whether) one defines and calibrates superiority (or the designation, 'superior'), that quality or status may not even exist.
You shut up, punk. It's been weeks since our posts and you're responding now? I knew what would happen on Nov. 4, and now the dems have no mandate. The media and the neocons would be laughable if they weren't so absurd.
No, you've merely been missing the head of the nail for ages. I'll rely on reality, while you'll continue to ignore the mountain of skulls in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia; the Iran-Contra Affair; and the current housing/financial mess that the veto-proof, Republican, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act brought about. We need a rebel to proceed with four more years of wars and financial incompetence.
Now, I respect Ron Paul and similar Republicans. It's a shame that they are the minority in their party.
