  • I've always liked AiC, not a huge fan, but they are definitely an outstanding band. That being said, you've gotta be kidding me. The only guy that could fill-in for Layne is a fucking Lenny Kravitz clone? That guy doesn't belong in the band. Layne was a piece of the band, an important piece but not the only piece. The band should definitely go on, but not with that guy. It's not a race issue, I like Lenny Kravitz too. This guy just doesn't have the look or the sound in my opinion.

  • You obviously have not seen DuVall live or you woudn't be saying that...

  • Also, whenever anybody has to say "it's not a race thing" it usually is.

  • @exprez1022

he wears the sunglasses and scarf inside, then outside on the JimmyKimmel show he took them of, and sings out of key, so, I concure my friend

  • Comment removed

  • Hahaha, Lenny Kravitz it´s singing in AIC! hahaha XD... Duvall it´s a great singer... i think that his best performance was in Would, at the Jimmy Kimmel live show...

  • 1:36 - 1:38 lulz

  • ahhaahahahahhaahahahahahahhaahhaha

  • Basically they've found a great substitute for Layne Staley. Those who say that this isn't AIC because of the singer, please open your mind -.-

  • Their is no sub for Layne, maybe you need to watch the miami 1991 man in the box performance again.

  • Well, you're one of those who think that Alice in chains should've died with Layne. But I love DuVall performances, in fact because I enjoy still hearing AIC songs. I don't know, what would you do, kill the band? :S

  • Yea because I really said all that. They should have just had Jerry take over sole vocal duties.

  • if you listen to the older Alice In Chains albums, you hear Jerry's voice quite a bit, he sings with Layne alot. you can hear his voice a lot on the new record too. I agree though, I wouldnt have minded if he was the only singer for the band now

  • Jerry could never be the only singer as you suggest since the entire band's sound is built on 2 part harmony minimums in EVERY single song they ever wrote.

  • @DonnieDarko727 Dude.. jeez. It's not about "substitutes", damn it. They "lost a brother" and then, they "gained a brother." that's it. Attempt to see it that way.

  • the rough thing about layne was his voice...i dont imagine him knocking too many guys out.

that said, i hate the scarves.

  • @RobesMarlin Hahaha.. they you probably haven't seen THAT one clip/piece of footage. X}

  • i can't believe the anti duvall sentiment of some. i mean, the band is still awesome. if you'd actually open your mind you'd realize that

  • Its funny if you look at the comments, people who have seen them live say that they are awesome. Must count for something.

  • staley?

  • Why did u get thumbs down? Lol I think the same thing, he aint a bad singer!

  • I agree man. He ain't layne. But he has his own sound and he sounds good

  • The New Alice In Chains is awesome regardless of who thinks they arent. Theyre just doing what they like to do and that is to make and play music and they liked doing that together as a group. Just because a member of the group passes away does not mean the rest of the group has to disband and never play their music again and it would be stupid for them to just change their name but still be playing the same stuff. Now the group that should have changed their name is Guns N Roses... no offense

  • well said! (:

  • Faintly familiar famous fans following friends flying fast n furious for friends from far flows...

  • amazing performance

  • Replacing Kurt Cobain from Nirvana would be a LOT harder than replacing Layne Staley... Not disrespecting Layne, he is and always will be one of my favourite vocalists of all time... but seeing as Kurt was the lead vocalist, guitarist and song writer for Nirvana and Layne was just the lead vocalist (who helped write some i think), its a lot harder to replace Kurt.

Duvall is doing a fantastic job. Hes giving AIC a little bit of his own sound instead of spitting on Layne by trying to replace him

  • yea i know where ur coming from. nirvana was mostly kurt.

but alice in chains was divided between layne and cantrell.

i like this replacement (willium duvall)

but layne is still my favorite singer of all time R.I.P.

  • hell na hes groovin dude lol hes in muic exstacy

  • Is it just me or does Sean look a bit ill, bored or something?

He looks like he doesn't want to be there in my opnion.

    But maybe it's jsut me.

  • Na I was thinkin the same thing. Well if you were a drummer would you want to always have to be stuck doing acoustic shows?

  • Guess I don't

  • to say that AIC shouldn't go forward if very selfish of anyone. Those guys sat through and watched their closest friend commit a very long, drawn out suicide if you will. To say that they shouldn't add a new member is the same to say to Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Genesis, AC/DC, Van Halen, etc. The band couldn't even tour regularly with Layne as he couldn't go out. They canceled entire tours because of his addictions. This line up is amazing and great for all members and crowds...

  • sean kinney looks like a person who have stones in 'kidney' xD.. im kidding, the gue guy should have health problems that day.. my bad..

  • Wow, that's awesome. Nicely done lads and welcome back!

  • anybody that puts down the new guy really dont have a appreciation for new chapters in music.. and this is a new chapter for AIC.....so get over yourself.. oh yea great addition to the band,,,,,

  • i just want a heavier frontman for alice in chains, wills always singing and never trying to scream or yell or growl or nothing. thats all.

  • Sean looks incredibly bored. Ha ha

  • Duvall is stepping into shoes that can't be filled. That said, give Duvall a break. If they would have hired someone that sounded like Layne you would complain he is copying Layne. AIC is making great music and that in itself is a good thing.

  • I just think they shouldn't add any new bandsmembers thts like replacingKurt Cobain for Nirvana. mean come on I don't hae tolike the way William sings. It's my opinion an it just isn't cuttin it for me.

  • Well I dont think that 'Lenny' really suits the band, but it great that the music is still out there as playing it to a new generation is the best way to keep the memory and message of Layne alive...

  • Lots of comments knocking Duvall, but in all honesty i have been a fan of this band for just about forever (and yes i was around when the whole grunge thing kicked off even though their sound wasnt quite that but i digress). I saw them live the other day and they kicked ass, Duvall is a lot better live in a setup that the band want, and not in some studio/tv show. Yes he's not layne but go see them truly live. I am going to see 2 more shows on their current uk tour, they are still that good!!

  • sean kinney looks without lightning! whats the matter with him? i know thats it was a 'acoustic ' performance, but c'mon!!

  • Duvall doesnt fit with AIC ... period ....

  • GO! duvall... this is not about who is better than who.. great work!.. love AIC

  • that's just made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! going to see them tomorrow in glasgow, i can't wait!!

  • oh by the way i believe that they should make Duval's mic louder he sings quite good but they kind of hide Duval's voice. maybe they fear that duval will not be accepted. but i like the way he sings XD.

  • tool0loot i couldnt be more agree with you . this guys still rocking the shit out of my i love Layne and i miss him so much but the band has the same great beautyfull sound they used to have and im extremely happy theyre back playng some really good rock . and Duval is doing a great job by the way i mean hes not layne but he harmonizes great with Jerry so i love each and every song of the new album.

  • The key thing: It looks like the guys are genuinely happy to be playing again!! And I used to be a Duvall-hater, but you gotta' admit...this beats anything that "the new" Guns N' Roses is putting out etc. , right??

  • You are absolute right my friend!!!

Im soo happy hearing them again.. Cant wait for the NEXT album :)

  • This was a great and beautiful version of No Excuses. For everyone who doesn't like it because William DuVall isn't Layne, well, duh. Layne can never be duplicated. With that being said, DuVall isn't a bad choice at all to fill Layne's spot. Let's remember that towards the last few years of Layne's life, he couldn't give a shit about AIC and would rather get high. I'll take someone who cares any day.....

  • Say what you want about AIC, but if you are a true fan, then you understand. It's not about Layne, or William, but the music! They still sound great and I applaud them for playing on. Miss you Layne

  • Sean Kenney as Fabio....hey I love the new shit!

  • Duvall critics:

Think of AIC as a one-of-a-kind car the band built. Layne usually drove, but he isn't here to drive it anymore.

Would you rather junk the car, or have a new passenger who painted it a different color?

    I'd prefer to keep it.

  • That was a perfect. Honeslty they can't replace Layne, you just can't. But this guy can be a match, and this shows they have moved on.

  • I meant a perfect metaphor, lol. Replying to the guy right below

  • Thank you! I'm a woman though! LOL!

  • well said...

  • No one has ever looked as cool as William Duvall in this video. What a ledge..

  • shit i donno, what about lenny cravits.

  • Not even close my friend..

  • ALSO, with both of them playing and singing at the same time, there's no one to do the lead part during the chorus. That kinda saddens me.

  • the new lead singer looks almost like lenny kravitz

  • jerry rules, that goes without saying. but the whole new album and all the new live stuff i wanna yell "stop hoggin the mic man!"

  • boo. New singer is great. New band, 2/3/4 same individuals rock the fucking world

  • Well Jerry sang lead on a bulk of the songs I think for the fans sake. There's a bunch of so called "die hard" fans that need to get used to William still. Or won't even give him the light of day. I am a die hard fan and loved William instantly. I am a die hard fan, but I'm also not blind to the fact that Layne was an addict. If he was still alive and not sober and not touring with Chains or Mad Season, I'd kick him in the balls and send his ass to N A

  • hey ComaAlpha. thanks for the reply/comment/thoughts. i hadnt thought about what you said when i said jerry was hoggin the mic. i see so so so much negative shit about duvall here. i see your point completely. i think he is a great choice as a singer. but alot of people wont let it rest or just respect that AIC, the band they love, has chosen him to sing. of course we all wish layne was singing, but he isnt here to do it. the 3 chose william. i think people outta respect it.

    peace

  • seeing them on the 23rd!

  • oh i hope all these silly people stop picking on william duvall! obviously jerry must think he's pretty good, or he wouldn't be in the band.

  • The whole band looks high as shit....Is it just me??...I mean look at Sean (Drummer)

  • Sean always looks awesome and in the moment- not high when he plays. Check out We Die young (Seattle art video) and No Excuses Unplugged

  • Then he looks really sad or something then....And dude im a hard core AIC fan I know every Live AIC video out there lol!

  • Just you . Maybe they're happy to be back.

  • all their acoustic stuff is cool...

  • sdwewewe

  • fuck, it kills me to see how strong cantrell is vocally, even after all these years. if layne were still alive they would still be making amazing songs.

i tried to give duvall a chance, but he is just completely mediocre

  • Duvall is pretty good, but to me, nothing replaes the amazing man that was Layne Staley

  • agree with kungfuchaos. duvall sounds just fine and when you perform an already mellow song acoustically what do you expect, some headbanging and mosh pits lol? If you wanna hear layne sing it then go listen to jar of flies.

  • wow...look at jerry's face at 2:10. It reminds me of kurt when nirvana did the Leadbelly cover on unplugged.

  • Wow guys stop whining! What do you want them to do during a mello song? Also, stop bashing DuVall! He sounds just fine! LAYNE IS DEAD!!! GET OVER IT!!!

  • they look fuckin´ bored.

    this performace sucks.

  • although the song sounds great it is a boring song to play

  • duvall's voice is weak. although that it is a incredible song to play.

    but they look so bored.

  • Yes it is very weak! Good someone else not afraid to tell the truth!

  • what have done today? nothing...right

  • Wow, Lenny Kravitz sounds good with Alice in Chains

  • Good thing you're not Jerry.

  • great song, and they played it good. Why do they look so upset tho?

  • Damn i admit with bjim89 seriously Grunge was not about dressing up with the latest fashion. It was about broken blue jeans and a flannel shirt.

  • No, there was no dress code, they wore flannel because its fucking cold there.

  • I just took some random outfit cause they don't really care about what they wear.

  • hahahhahha i think this perfomance is a joke , just look at sean's expressions, he seems mad on the bud light ads lol, damn duval looks like it's on a fashion model show . damn it's AIC. not a role model reality.

  • I don't really like the new guy.

  • alright that just fucking kicks ass! Wow Will fucking wow!

  • Wow...That was purtee damn good.

And I love the new CD

Glad the band is back also.

  • Bud Light signs disrespectful? Who the hell do you think made this segment possible idiot?

  • having Alice in Chains, with all they're been through, perform on a stage with a bunch of Bud Light signs is kinda disrespectufl. Yeah, Layne didn't die from drinking but everyone who ends up on heroin starts out on alcohol...its the progression of things

  • You need to harden the fuck up buddy, i hate people like you who go out of their way to be offended, its sad.

  • i totaly hear yah man, dont be offended its just a sponsor man.

  • Exellent performance

  • awesome

  • it's not thier fault Layne couldn't kick heroin

  • duvall sucks get john kosco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hater

  • People have to learn to accept that bands evolve and if all albums sounds the same people complain about that instead.

If you only like the old stuff then stick with the old stuff.

Bands that don't grow up and evolve dies!

So why should they change their name.

Should all bands that change their music change their name? I love when bands evolve. It gets more interesting. (except when they go mainstream in a bad way and gets less interesting)

I agree layne was more talented but just saying...

  • exactly. well said. and ppl can argue all they want about the name nd all but the fact of the matter is they are back and here to stay. AIC!!!

  • RIGHT ON!!

    THEY'RE BACK AND THEY'RE BLACK!!!

... or rather blue as their album points out, black get shoved over by blue.

Y'know i think it's them describing the transition from mourning over Mr. Staley [feeling black] to feeling [blue] better enough to get back on the horse-and good on them for it =D

  • 'get back on the horse'

Man bad choice of words there.

  • why?

    did something happen with horses?

is it because Jerry owns a farm?

    =§

  • Horse = slang for heroin

Listen to Godsmack off of Dirt, you've never questioned the line 'for the horse you've grown much fonder than for me that I don't ponder'?

  • well, i can't say i spotted that... i find their lyrics kind of instrumental at times so I can't really identify words without effort which puts me out.

I just like the mix and the whole ensemble.

But in retrospective, yes a bad choice of words on my part.

IT"S FANTASTIC THEY"RE BACK DOING WHAT THEY ENJOY!

  • AIC is Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Starr, and Sean Kinney, even though I love Mike Inez and respect Duvall.

  • I just had a Lenny Kravitz flashback when I saw that dude in tha glasses

  • fuck all the DuVall haters. i'll be damned if that didn't sound like Layne!

  • as well as having a very good sound of his own.

  • like the the opening to "Last Of My Kind". very talented musician.

  • tottaly. dude i love that song.

  • The band is AIC despite Layne being gone. Yes Layne was amazing, and his voice can never be captured again, but the fact is that Jerry wrote most of the songs anyway. He is one of the greatest songwriters ever, and one amazing poet. Nobody had this feeling when Mike Starr left the band, because he didn't write any songs he just played. Essentially it was the same for Layne. Yes, he did write songs, but no where near as many as Jerry did. I think Alice In Chains is still amazing. RIP Layne.

  • Jerry is AIC

  • Pretty much, I might be wrong but I think Jerry wrote most of the songs even when Layne was around

  • Everyone keeps saying that this band should be called something else because Layne is dead. But if it WERE called something else, you critics would say "they just trying to sound like how AIC used to be". It's a hollow argument. Duvall kicks ass.

  • I love Mike Inez, he looks like the happiest person up there, out of all of them....he has the most live spirit =D

  • Nothing against Duvall, he has his own thing going and it would be good... if this weren't Alice in Chains. Jerry is a genius, but the band is not AIC without Layne.

  • At least Duvall isn't trying to take over. He knows that Jerry is and always was in charge.

  • Didn't they play on the outdoor stage? Why was this song performed on the indoor stage?

  • They did 2 nights on Jimmy Kimmel this past week. So on night one they did the outdoor show. This was night 2 - the lighter set.

  • Cool. Thanks!

  • Anyone know what Mike's bass is? It's very beautiful.

  • maybe a Michael Kelly.. im not for sure though

  • awesome performance! i was biting my nails though thinking kanye was going to interrupt and grab the mic

  • I'm a AIC fan and I approve of William Duvall. Layne was still the man though.

  • can't wait to see them live again!!!

  • I saw AIC at the Riviera in Chicago a year or two ago and they were really good, did two sets (one accoustic) really did Layne proud, love Alice in Chains

  • I think its a respect thing why Will isn't all up front and in you face, he has more then what it take to do that... He knows he's filling big shoes. Welcome back AIC.... And Will THANK YOU for helping bring a killer f..king band back from the ashes

  • i really like the new album thoroughly good but i'm sorry almost impossible to pick duvalls voice out, like i cant even tell when hes singing

  • ok dude, you just said it perfectly: that's exactly what i have been thinking these past 2 days, listening.

i keep waiting for some big moment to go "oh, that's the new dude". i can't hear it. it seems to me like jerry is the new lead singer. and will is backing him up...

  • idk i kinda like jerry louder now... since he is the original guy... and its not like hes trying to take the highs or anything... will is still singing laynes part.

  • You're deaf then.

  • I LIKE IT

ALICE IN CHAINS KEEP ON ROCKIN

  • They should do everything acoustic... it sounds fantastic.

  • again, kinney is amazing...

  • this smokes the mtv unplugged version. let's face it: layne was a little fucked up that day.

generally in my opinion, the sound of the mtv unplugged series sucked ass. not only because mtv blows huge vomit chunks, but the sound was awful. what is unplugged anyway, if every instrument is actually plugged in? and then, you get all these jackasses yelling 'whoo-hoo' just because they know they're being recorded.

i loved layne, but william is a better performer.

  • Are you fucking insane?

Maybe William is a better performer than Layne was the ONE night they did the unplugged show which was Layne literally at his worst Go watch some old AiC live videos and see how wrong you are.

Watch "Would?" and "Junkhead" live at Singles. Layne will absolutely blow anyone's mind the way he could perform live.

I like DuVall and all, but Layne was probably the greatest live singer ever.

  • And I'm not just talking his voice live.. Layne was fucking INTENSE live. He shows so much emotion when he sings. Uncomparable.

  • i knew when i was writing that, i was gonna catch hell from somebody...

i saw layne and alice live twice... maybe it's better if i just say they are very different. i agree with you; the performances in Singles are what made me buy Dirt and Facelift.

will just seems really smooth and a real pro. plays and sings and moves around really naturally.

basically, we ain't ever gonna see or hear from layne again, and i'm just super positive and really hopeful for the new chains! it's all we got....

  • naw, i hear ya dude. AiC is by far my favorite band still today and I truly hope they make more new albums (Black Gives Way To Blue is REALLY good)

i like DuVall, he seems like a really cool guy who's a huge AiC fan. he's also a good vocalist who's trying his hardest to do what's impossible.

But the incredibleness of Layne must never be forgotten. The guy was one of a kind - have you ever heard someone hit high notes the way Layne did? just unbelievable

anyway, long live the new AiC!

  • soooooo good.

  • I still can hear Layne, even if he is not there, that is the beauty of it.

  • It's because Jerry's voice is scarily similar. I saw him solo in 2002, and the AIC songs were amazing! Back then, Duvall was in his own band. They opened for Jerry.

  • Will do the job. I like his style.

  • I like them but a lot of their stuff does sound the same

  • Its great to have chains back. will never be the same without Layne, but the new album fuckin rocks.

  • I miss Lane, they do pretty good with this line up, but it will never be the same.

  • They haven't been the same since Jar Of Flies! They haven't been the same since they quit REALLY touring in 93. They are much stronger now because they are touring and they are the best. I'm sorry....I love Layne, but dude the band didn't support any albums because of drugs

  • the camera guy is really loving sean and jerry but you hardly catch a single glimpse of mike. its also funny how sean just kinda stares off into space while he's drumming

  • wow, the harmonies here totally make up for the previous nights performance...im still on the fence dont know whether to like this new guy or not..

  • I think the biggest drawback of this new guys is that it not dark as it was before, although he sounds almost the same, in this song!

  • yeah. Cantrell is lead vocals here dawg

  • They're actually both lead vocal on No Excuses.

  • I could see why people would complain if they just carried on as soon as Layne Died but lets be real that was 14 years ago. The world Need Alice In Chains. I'm eternally greatful.

  • Great Alice in Chains is back !!

and now i can go someday in a concert of them!!!

  • Nice, I am the bald stud on screen at 1:05.

  • You're kyle gass?

  • You were there, dude? God shit! How was is being there as opposed to us seeing it on youtube??

  • hmm ok

  • This is a great song. I heard it on the radio a few weeks ago and I bought it on iTunes within the next hour :)

  • its been out for like over a decade.... lol

  • lol I'm slow at finding music I like ;)
