@michaelc2204 I wouldn't eschew this camera based on the "no AVCHD" rule alone. Software is getting better and better at supporting it. Adobe Premiere has supported it natively since CS4. So really, you'd just drag the files over and start editing.
I took hg20 on a cross country rally to test fast movement. I taped it to my helmet but the stability is rubbish. i got rid and bought action cam from maplins problem solved.
do you use final cut express? if so what settings do you use to get these results? I have just got FCE and finding it difficult to use, especially music tracks which just end up as a series of beeps????!?!? any advice you have would be appreciated. thanks
I used to use FCE. Watch my tutorials on it. I posted 2 of them, hopefully it will help. Also watch other youtube tutorials on FCE, it helped me a lot. i have never really done much with music tracks, just putting a song in the timeline.
@IDISLIKEYOU6 i saw on argos it came with software, but i thought "it wil be crap and unnecesary), also, i use linux (if you dont know what that is, in short, it probably wont work)
I have the same camera...but I'm not getting the same quality...what were your settings in the camcorder for this video ? Your reply will be greatly appreciated.
@mempey Nasty as in snow? If that's the case then you do snow? I want to see the white balance between dark, grey and light shades. I want to know if it can pick up shades of the snow rather than over contrast and goes bright white. By the way, I think youtube degrades the quality quite a bit. I'm sure the original file would be much better.
Well I edit on a Mac so i have been using Final Cut Express. It is a little limited but a good program. You can do a lot with it but I wanted more. I have lately been using Adobe Premier Pro. I love it! It is quite a bit more expensive but well worth it. It is overwhelming at first but i ave learned a lot from tutorials on YouTube. You can always download the 30 day trial from Adobe. Try it an see how you like it. I just think you can do a lot more with it.
Yeah I guess the macs are best for video editing & stuff... so, I have to get a mac first! I was thinking of getting a mac mini together with the final cut express to start with! I'm a beginner so it should just fit my needs ;)
The CMOS rolling shutter.. if you don't know what that is try this: put it in 1/2000 and move it left and right real fast. You will see that the image will be like a jelly following the motion. That's how CMOS sensors on these small cams work, and when you pan real fast the image gets distorted. When on 1/50 or 1/120 for example.. the effect is very well diminished. Test it, I'm not talking randomly :P
Please anybody im desperate for help on import and export setting into final cut pro and the right setting to put the video on youtube in hd message me or video thanks in advance
do you think i should buy the Canon Vixia HG20? cause right now i have one camera that doesn't have a charger and one charger that doesn't have a camera. oh yeah and a cell phone. So i really need a new camera but I'm a kid so this would take a lot of saving...
I love my HG20, you will need something to edit with, so you need a computer and software that will handle AVCHD format. You might want to look into a Canon that records to a mini dv tape.
The HG10 has a smaller HDD (40GB as opposed to the HG20's 60GB). It also has a slightly less powerful image sensor (2.96 Megapixels as opposed to 3.33) , and... it's maximum bitrate is 15Mbps, as opposed to 24Mbps.
The HG10 is silver; the HG20 is black.
Also, the HG10 has a viewfinder, while the HG20 does not (however, the HG21 does have one).
I'm sure there are more, minor differences, but those are the main ones.
what is the output format? I have the hg20 too and the rendered video haven't so much colors. Nice vid, nice colors, nice sound, nice macbook. I'm a PC :(
To be honest with you, I am not really sure the specs on my computer, I use a MacBook Pro, I know it can handle about anything. i think it may be Adobe, I have heard it is like Sony Vegas, it is slow and glitchy the first few times you play it back. After, that it should speed up and smooth out. I guess, not really sure though. I use Final Cut Express and I can render it before I play it back so there is no problems.
yeah i mean i can adda few videos in and then render them to pla before playback but it just takes a while and i just want to be able to add them and preview it so it plays smoothly thanks for the help
so how did you make out with recording to the SD card? i'm really considering this camera as a purchase, but if it cant take a small vibration that could get annoying quick. also, i noticed when you were quickly panning across the dogs it got very blurry, does that happen much?
Have not tried the SD card yet. It does take more than a simple vibration to cause an error. Keep in mind I had it attached to a remote control monster truck. The only reason it got blurry is that I didn't have it on the highest quality settings or the highest shutter priority. Editing software and YouTube have a little to do with it also. Not the camera.
okay i need help i bought this camcorder the other day and i went ot to film a few things and i've installed ImageMixer3 and i'm trying to copy the files onto my computer but it is being so slow it says it's going to tke over an hour to copy a 6 second video can anyone help? thanks
I assume you are using a PC, right. i use a Mac so I am not sure of the process on a PC. My first though is the software. A friend of mine has the same problem of super slow transfer. I recommend Sony Vegas, another great friend of mine has no problem with his HG20 and transfering the files.
yeah i worked out that it was a dodgy USB cable haha i did so much updating and uninstalling and reinstalling and searching things but i just changed the cable and it worked fine! i was in such a stress over it! thanks anyway! and this is an amazing camcorder!
Man, i am so glad you figured it out, sorry i wasn't much help. The more you play with this camera, the more you will like it. The only thing i am not wild about is that it does not do well with vibrations.. It can't write to the hard drive and gives a buffing error. i am going to try recording to a memory card and see what happens. Other than that, it is a great camera.
just for everyone to know: what you're watching isn't the camera's full HD potential as it needs to have quality loss to be upladed to youtube, so the camcorder films even in better quality than what is shown in the video. its truly amazing.
Truly amazing is right. If you hook the camera directly into a HD TV, you will have to sit down. No kidding, it is better than the HD cable channels we have.
I've just bought an HG20 myself, but that .MTS format is driving me mad, I can't find any program that likes it, and when I try to convert it to something else, it's all jerky.
I'm not sure if you have already answered this question. I have an HG20 and FCExpress and I was wondering what you use to export? H.264, MPEG-4? Quality? Also, you mentioned you shoot in 29.75 FPS. Should I export using 29,27 if I'm shooting 30P? Thanks. Awesome video by the way.
Thanks! Great demo. You were able to show the awesome steadiness with your driving as well as the clarity with the zoom function. Canon owes you one because you will definetly help thier sales. Nice video as well. Kudos
i just got the canon hg20 camera same as yours...now in order to film in the hd exact setting so i can get same picture as you have Please Please tell me the exact settings and first thing i should do before i film...just took camera out of box. thanks so muchh!
Not really any negatives at all. Although I am not really fond of the fact that you have to have the power supply plugged into it to import the video. That's trivial though. Other than that I love it. The 60g hard drive is plenty enough space. And it does well in low light too. But you cant bead a Canon anyway.
It must be your connection or computer. On the other hand it may look like it is choppy because of the scene, sometimes water looks funny in HD as it flows.
Awesome footage, l soundtrack too!!!. Thank you for sharing. I want this cam so ad, but I'm afraid I won't be able to figure it out properly... =) Is 2GHz 4200 Dual-Core w/3 GB RAM & 4500MHD graphics acceletor enough to process this kind of video? What software would you recommend for PC? THANK YOU!
do you convert the mts files from the camera with another piece of software? Im really interested in this camera for editing in Final Cut Pro but I hear you need to convert the files before you can really do anything.
Omg I was looking at the Birds and wondering why the focus wasn't coming in and it looked a little pixelated and then it zoomed out... just Amazing! 5*'s
Yeah it does get a little pixelsted that close in. But to be honest it wasn't zoomed in all the way. I had it all the way in and could only see the birds eye, but it was too much.
I filmed it at a real slow shutter priority, wont make that mistake again. I think it was on 60, I usually film at 2000 if light permits. It was also before I dialed in my compression and save settings. My newer videos don;t lag like that.
I have HG20 myself and I think its an excellent camera for the money! I only wish there was 720p recording and other format than AVCHD which is some 3 years ahead of today. I now have to convert everything to MPEG2 720 in order to have reasonable editing even for a new computer.
Yeah, unfortunately thats the only way I can do it. Don't even think of doing AVCHD without a quad core, but even then its tough. Also, do you have a small hissing sound coming from the hard drive?
Either way, for youtube purposes 720p is all you can do.
Actually I use a Mac with Final Cut Experss and it is designed areound AVCHD. It handles full 1920 like a champ. I upload all my videos in 1280 for Youtube HD though.
Well, thats news to me. I guess thats one place where having a mac might be advantageous.
None of the editing programs on PC can handle 1080p AVCHD well, at least on a dual core processor. Even playing it without the right codec is impossible. FFDshow causes massive audio-video mismatches, while coreAVC codec (which is not free!) makes file viewing more or less possble.

Thanks! I always shoot in MXP mode, with a shutter priority as high as possible. On a sunny day I keep it at 2000.
mempey 2 years ago
I have a HG20 also. Doing that is NOT a good ideea (CMOS rolling shutter).
xtazysv 2 years ago
Why is it not a good idea?
mempey 2 years ago
The CMOS rolling shutter.. if you don't know what that is try this: put it in 1/2000 and move it left and right real fast. You will see that the image will be like a jelly following the motion. That's how CMOS sensors on these small cams work, and when you pan real fast the image gets distorted. When on 1/50 or 1/120 for example.. the effect is very well diminished. RoganR 2 years ago
hi guy, i'm italian boy, sorry for my english.
what kind of setting do you have use for this video? 24 mpx?and 25 framerate? AE?
soul499 2 years ago
I usually shoot in full 24 MXP and 29.75 frame rate, and in shutter priority mode of 2000, or as high as lighting allows.

any cons with this cam? is the HDD space enough? low light...?
macintoshtipz 2 years ago
Not really any negatives at all. Although I am not really fond of the fact that you have to have the power supply plugged into it to import the video. That's trivial though. Other than that I love it. The 60g hard drive is plenty enough space. And it does well in low light too. But you cant bead a Canon anyway.

hey at 2:21, is the camera making the picture choppy or is it just the website or my computer ?
jomesband 2 years ago
It must be your connection or computer. On the other hand it may look like it is choppy because of the scene, sometimes water looks funny in HD as it flows.

Thanks man you inspired me and I got one
thanks for your help

how much money it costs?

Awesome footage, l soundtrack too!!!. Thank you for sharing. I want this cam so ad, but I'm afraid I won't be able to figure it out properly... =) Is 2GHz 4200 Dual-Core w/3 GB RAM & 4500MHD graphics acceletor enough to process this kind of video? What software would you recommend for PC? THANK YOU!
croft88 2 years ago
Thanks. Your computer should be fine. I would use Sony Vegas for PC editing.

Thank you!!! =)

What sort of Video editing software did you use?
ferozmovie 2 years ago
Final Cut Express on a MacBook Pro.
mempey 2 years ago
do you convert the mts files from the camera with another piece of software? Im really interested in this camera for editing in Final Cut Pro but I hear you need to convert the files before you can really do anything.

Omg I was looking at the Birds and wondering why the focus wasn't coming in and it looked a little pixelated and then it zoomed out... just Amazing! 5*'s
Zanthyrdv7z 2 years ago
Yeah it does get a little pixelsted that close in. But to be honest it wasn't zoomed in all the way. I had it all the way in and could only see the birds eye, but it was too much.
Thanks for the stars

the video quality is amazing but can anyone tell me why it seems laggy especially the dog scene 1:56
paintballkidd07 2 years ago
I filmed it at a real slow shutter priority, wont make that mistake again. I think it was on 60, I usually film at 2000 if light permits. It was also before I dialed in my compression and save settings. My newer videos don;t lag like that.

your video looks really artistic. Make me want to buy this cam right now, been wondering for days. Thanks

Thank You!. I love the HG20
mempey 2 years ago
Ahh, pink floyd, right?
I have HG20 myself and I think its an excellent camera for the money! I only wish there was 720p recording and other format than AVCHD which is some 3 years ahead of today. I now have to convert everything to MPEG2 720 in order to have reasonable editing even for a new computer.
hummiemd 2 years ago
Bummer you cant enjoy full quality.
Yes it is Pink Floyd.
mempey 2 years ago
Yeah, unfortunately thats the only way I can do it. Don't even think of doing AVCHD without a quad core, but even then its tough. Also, do you have a small hissing sound coming from the hard drive?
Either way, for youtube purposes 720p is all you can do.
hummiemd 2 years ago
Actually I use a Mac with Final Cut Experss and it is designed areound AVCHD. It handles full 1920 like a champ. I upload all my videos in 1280 for Youtube HD though.
mempey 2 years ago
Well, thats news to me. I guess thats one place where having a mac might be advantageous.
None of the editing programs on PC can handle 1080p AVCHD well, at least on a dual core processor. Even playing it without the right codec is impossible. FFDshow causes massive audio-video mismatches, while coreAVC codec (which is not free!) makes file viewing more or less possble.
