  • Magic video. Thanks.

  • Cheers, glad you enjoyed it

  • WOnderfully shot - Gosh she's so loud! - Not that I am complaining! Was just a bit distorting as she went past

But all the same a wonderful production there

  • She is certainly one loud engine. Apologies for any distortion, purely down to 5043 as I hadn't adjusted the microphone settings at all from what I normally use!

  • @acw71000 No worries. I am gonna try and get a photo or two of her at Walsall tomorrow, would film it, but it would be a waste for a few minutes of film to be honest.

  • That last view is just perfect.

  • Thank you, an element of good fortune involved as there was just enough light

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • Many thanks, an unforgettable day!

  • O lucky Britain! Unhappy Canada will never see a steam engine on a mainline.

  • I had heard that sad news elsewhere, must be very frustating for you all.

  • Lovely to watch these videos of 5043 I used to be a fireman on WR at Wolverhampton and have worked on 5043 Trevor Binnersley

  • Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos. It was certainly a fine performance by all concerned. 5043 is a fine locomotive.

  • @MsDiscovery3

Hi Trevor - yes 5043 looks stunning. Two ex Tyseley firemen I know have told me that the restoration is as good as it gets. As good as,if not better, than Swindon turned them out. Looking forward to my all time favourite western engine making a come back though - Clun Castle. Cheers.

  • Hi Austin, Only just got round to watching this properly, all excellent coverage and the last shot over Whalley Viaduct is so timeless.

  • Ta very much, I'm still in search of the perfect sunset shot though!

  • What a pity that so many clips are 5*ed, because this is so much better than most. Superb shots from locations I have not seen before, really showcasing the moors in atmospheric conditions. Ingleborough and Whalley viaduct in that great silhouette shot (slightly spoilt by the bike noise). And kudos to the crew for proving that GWR engines can steam well on long drags, particularly after disappointing shows by KE1 a decade ago.

    Truly excellent.

  • Thanks very much for your kind comments. It was certainly a brilliant effort by loco, crew and all who look after the Earl. I really wish I had edited out that dreadful car (not bike) noise before uploading. Thankfully I have done so on my own extended version of the video

  • Great Western engines are usually impressive on the mainline, but if it's a tyseley one then you know it will just showcase everything the GWR stood for and the performance, combined with the noise and cleaming condition of 5043 has yet again done the GWR proud, excellent video, great choice of locations too. 5 stars!

  • Fully agree with with you re Tyseley. Thanks for your kind comments, glad you enjoyed the video, I won't forget that day in a hurry!

  • Austin, another fine video collection. Having performed outstandingly, EoME seems to have brought the best out of the "regulars" who chase steam in the North! - Thanks for sharing! - Mike

  • Thank you very much Mike, 5043 is a magnificent loco and so well looked after by the Tyseley boys. I wonder if all of us who filmed this run felt the spirits of Brunel and Collett saying 'Don't dare mess up!'

  • Is a great video Austin, a real pleasure to watch. Too bad I can integrate it into my website as the video of the week the "embed code" is disabled on YouTube.

A big thank you for these beautiful pictures, especially the last suéquence filmed at night on the viaduct. A gem ...

    Philippe

  • Merci beaucoup Philippe pour vos aimables commentaires. Je vais enlever le bloc si vous souhaitez intégrer la vidéo

  • Superb video Austin. One of your best so far on mainline steam.

    Thank you for sharing.

    Jeff

  • Thanks very much Jeff, I would say it was one of the best performances I have had the pleasure to film for many years. It will certainly stick in the memory banks for a long time

  • Brilliant Austin, you captured that pefectly, and what beautiful countryside as well.

Who was the joker at the end showing off?sounded terrible,i think i heard you say something LOL...........John

  • Thanks so much John, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, a prat driving up a narrow road far too fast at the end, I did mutter something and with hindsight should have edited it out.

  • @acw71000 No do not do that with any luck the person may see the video and realise what a pratt he made of himself....John

  • Lovely film Austin ! a magificent effort by all concerned the loco sounds great. Thanks for sharing Brian

  • Thanks very much Brian, its wonderful to see the crews enthusiasm for this run and Tyseley obviously maintain the loco to their usual very high standard

  • Another fine film with some very atmospheric shots.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

    Dave

  • My pleasure Dave and thanks for your very kind comments

  • Great stuff, Austin. Well shot and well edited; really caught the feeling of the day very well.

  • Many thanks Mark, a memorable day indeed. Were you out yourself?

  • Another excellent caught amount of footages, real nice begining at Blea Moor 'n good to see the old setting is still there. The blitz up Birkett Common no one can deny that! The loco made a real onslaught up the gradient. and a nice silhouette ending to a fine performance of a Great Western Castle. Was great to meet up with you again Austin

  • Thanks Ryan, good to see you too again on Saturday and I was glad your long journey was rewarded with such a great performance from 5043. Just going to view your vid. now

  • Nice vid. thanks for sharing

  • Nice vid. thanks for sharing

  • Thank you, I am pleased you enjoyed it

  • It was emotional, and your closing shot...well what can I say, I will watch it again and again.

Thanks for being there and sharing it with us.

    Eddie

  • Thanks very much Eddie, I've filmed a lot of steam down the years and this run will certainly stick in the mind. Touch and go for the last shot with the Earl being held before Whalley and the light fading fast!

  • Excellent video and locations, liked the last shot

  • Thanks for you kind comments, glad you enjoyed it

  • Greats shots and clarity. Was the opening shot coming out of the curve at the Vulcan Village? Liked & Faved. ★★★★★. Keith

  • Thanks Keith, the opening shot was from the bridge at Old Alder Lane, before the junction

  • I have been waiting more years than I care to remember to see a GWR loco thrash the S&C Austin, and 5043 has done it. You've captured it brilliantly as expected, and a big thanks for doing so from me....Bob

  • Thanks very much Bob, it was a real thrill to witness that yesterday. She is quite an engine isn't she and so well cared for by the guys at Tyseley.

  • @acw71000 She's always been a top performer Austin, in her previous life she was one of the favourites on The Bristolian achieving 100mph on a daily basis....Bob

  • Austin,

    A quite excellent film..

This would be a credit to Steamtube...if you'd like to join!!

    Peter

  • Thanks Peter for your very kind comments

  • Cheers Steve, yeah I just let her run through at Blea Moor as it's good every now and again to really enjoy what you are seeing. Hope to see your vid later, just going to watch the match and I'll send you a message later re Divx problems.

  • Lovely video. Some exallent shots of it running light to Hellifiled and going along the S&C line. I love oyur last shot of it gonig over a virduct with the fading light behind her lovely, shaem there wasn't some eveing sun still out to light her a little but still lovely. I think GWR Pride been restored now with her not failing. thumbs up and favorte

  • Thanks very much, it was a shame about the sunset, at this time of year it sets a little further round than in the summer, good job she wasn't ant later though as the light was fading fast. Its been a great year for the Earl with the Bristolian and now this run, all thanks to the professionalism of the Tyseley men.

  • Superb sound quality too. With the birdsong etc it evoked memories of when I was a teenager sat in my darkened bedroom soaking up Peter Handford's epic soundscapes of Kings and Castles storming Dainton,on Transacord's 'West of Exeter'.........

  • Yes, he was a genius wasn't he, I have quite a few of his recordings and its lovely to play them and conjure up the images of the trains in your mind.

  • It's all been said, Austin, but I have to repeat, "Brilliant" - especially the closing sequence. . . Alan (PS we had cloudless sunshine in Pembrokeshire where I was at a ploughing match)

  • Thanks very much Alan, the Birkett shot would have been in full sun had she not been running ten early! As I was walking back to the car the line was bathed in it. I think Steve caught it in sun on the northbound run

  • Superb Footage Austin really liked the Whalley shot in the sunset and the sound at Birkett was incredible. It was nice to meet you at Hellifield. Regards Phil.

  • Cheers Phil, good to meet you too, is that you perched on the hillock at Blea Moor when I zoomed into the box? Have to warn you, I don't pay appearance fees!!

  • Wonderfull there Austin you know where the best locations are don't you..

I videod her at Hellifiled Station before moving on 5*** Liked and Faved well done

  • Thanks very much, what a wonderful day it was. As for locations, I do have my tried and tested spots after all these years.

  • Superb footage Austin, a joy to watch, especially Whalley. Mike

  • Thanks very much Mike, I was pleased with Whalley after a quick (but legal) sprint from Birkett

  • Lovely video there! I was at Hellifield and filmed it depart there aswell. Excellent shot from Blea Moor, sounding brilliant there. glad to see 5043 kept up the railtours name too haha.

    Liked and Favourited!

  • Cheers, she sounded superb today and I was so pleased she proved all the doubters and moaners wrong. The ghosts of Brunel and Collett would have been looking on witha smile on their faces I reckon.

  • Fantastic. So stirring I felt myself welling up. Beautifully filmed,& sound is wonderful.Dad was travelling aboard so sending him this link-Im sure your filming has captured the spectacle better than his experience of it from inside the carriage!

    Cracking job.

  • Thanks very much and I hope your Dad enjoys it too. I'm sure he had a wonderful day yesterday. It was certainly a pleasure for me to see (and hear!) 5043 in fine form

  • Brillant Shots, a GWR beat Settle & Carlisle line normally GWR loco fail over the shap & Settle & Carlisle. But 5043 has proved it wrong. she looks a beast over the line.

  • Thanks , yes I filmed Nunney in 1994, the last time a Castle was on the S & C. It shows what they can do when loaded sensibly and with the right crew on the footplate

  • Load 10 plus 120 or so tons of Class 47 isn't to be sneezed at. I presume the 47 was on the back for shunting and for heating.

  • Certainly another great performance from 5043. I think the diesel was at Network Rails request in view of it being 'leaf fall season' on the S & C. Better safe than sorry and it certainly didn't seem to be assisting in the clips I got.

  • The line over Shap and the S&C are 2 different lines right?

  • @Mikelandscaper Yes, they are the two main lines that go into Carlisle from the south. They are only a few miles apart but offer different challenges to the loco and crew. Both are very popular with steam enthusiasts for obvious reasons given the scenery although its widely considered that the S&C is the better to look at. On some weekends it is not unheard of for 2 or 3 steam specials to visit Carlisle via these routes and on occasion you can get two there at once which makes a lovely sight.

  • Great stuff as always Austin. May I ask if that line through Blea Moor is open to regular traffic or is it a part of a preservation railway.

  • @Rocketboy1950

yes, it's the main line between Leeds and Carlisle, originally the Midland Railway main line. There was talk of closing it in the 80s, but fortunately sense prevailed. It's used by a lot of freight now.

  • @AndreiTupolev Thanks

  • Cheers Rod, yes it is still a Network Rail route despite Mrs.Thatchers attempts to close the line in the 1980's it was reprieved after a long campaign and is now busier than ever, especially for freight.

  • @acw71000 Thanks, looks like a windswept and frigid place to be. What a lonely existence in the signal box.

  • sadly couldn't make it but glad you lads did, lovely video, especially the Whalley viaduct after sunset, very atmospheric, and I guess the whistle meant some photters on the A59, blea moor near deafened me, had to turn it down, same at Birkett, amusing to see that bloke running to get a good spot on the wall there, some mic you've got there, amazing sound mate, wonderful, watched three times already, cheers.

  • Thanks Leon, what a cracking day it was yesterday, sorry you couldn't make it, thanks for sending me the times, much appreciated. I think the sound was helped by there not being much wind about yesterday
