Growing breast and getting your period happens at the same time. The girl finally gets those bumps as laura put it but she also has to deal with that monthly pain. One good and one bad. :(

Some girls' breast remain small even after the onset of their monthly period. Small breasts are no indication that a girl has/has not started her period.

I think she would have been way too young to get married at this age. I would never allow my child to mary at 13 1/2 years old. I wonder why Charles would have allowed Mary to wed, but wanted Laura to wait until she was 18?

Charles said they had to wait for a year and a half until Mary was 15. My grandma was 15 when she was married. Back then it was not considerd too young. In fact if you were not married by the time you were 21 you were considered an old maid. In the 1800's the life expectancy was much lower, so waiting until you were in your 20's or 30's was too late. There was a strong chance you would be dead by 30. Plus, as long as a girl has her monthly period then she can reproduce despite her age.

The real Mary Ingalls from the books never got married. In true life she lived with Carry until she died.

On the show they had to leave her character free since she went blind and then married a blind man in later episodes. I actually like her husband in the later episodes; they fit good together. I think John was too immature for Mary. If he really loved Mary then why did'nt he suggest they wait until he finished his education and got a job. Who says they had to live on a farm?
