  • I love her voice, but in this piece I just like Madame Callas so much more.

  • I had the supreme HONOR of working with this lady and her husband over a period of time, and still this sends chills right up my spine.

  • The marvelous trill passage at 2:45 is one of the grandest highlights

    of all opera.

  • No one sings such a vast, exposed repertory for forty years without mastering breath control. All comments to the contrary are ridiculous. As a singer, as I learn a piece I mark the score to indicate where I intend to take a breath. There is some wiggle room of course, but a conductor that had an entirely different idea of the tempo would throw me off for sure. That is what Sutherland wanted to avoid. Her music was difficult enough as it was.

  • No breath control are you an idiot. Listen to her "The Soldier Tir'd". As a matter of fact she is know for her breath control you idiot. She taught Pavarotti his breath control as he says in his biography.

  • @Ariadne7710 I will have to find the program at my apartment next week when i get back home. Just inbox me next week.

  • @laflutedepan3 Oh yes. This soprano was unbelievable. She was sick with a bad cold for every single performance, and sung the hell out of that role. She is from Austria. She came all the way to Dallas and showed out.

  • I saw a performance of this opera a few weeks ago, and the soprano could give Lady Sutherland a run for the money. Lady is awsome.

  • @TheKingJacob1 SERIOUSLY? I think Callas was the only one who could have considered giving Dame Sutherland a run for her money...

  • @TheKingJacob1 What is the name of the soprano you are talking about\ please???

  • Great coloratura display. Nothing to do with Lucia or her state of mind. Pace too fast, sound too bright and breezy, orchestra too bouncy, where is the tragedy? A pity that pandering to the masses whose concern is trills, excessive ornaments cadenzas and high E6s. Poor Lucia is lost in more ways than one!!!!

  • @Ariadne7710

"orchestra too bouncy".....LOL. You sound like you studied music on the Cartoon Network. All those trills, cadenzas and "excessive" ornaments were designed for the audiences of the time.....composers sought to entertain, excite and thrill the listeners. Bel Canto is greatly diminished without those things. All the high-brow nonsense and snobbery came later, but opera was the music of the common people, and it was meant to entertain.

  • @Hako2004 Thank you! I agree completely. Richard Bonynge was an expert on the Bel Canto repertoire and I'm sure he knew what he was doing with the orchestra.

  • @laflutedepan3 If Richard Bonynge was such a great bel canto expert how come once his wife retired he was never asked to conduct again at Covent Garden, or The Met, or La Scala or anywhere of any repute?? He only got to conduct works in out of the way provincial places or in Australia, his home country. He was a mediocrity who would never have had a career as a conductor if he didn't have his wife insist that she would only sing if he was hired to conduct. What a career!!! What an expert!!!

  • @Ariadne7710 You know what, I'm just going to stop replying to you. We obviously have very different opinions. It's not my job to convince or educate you.

  • @laflutedepan3 Hahahaha:))))) I am grief striken that I shall be deprived of your clearly "vastly superior" knowledge!!!!!

  • @Ariadne7710. It wasn't Bonynge. Major opera houses insist on choosing the conductor. Joan hated battles regarding the tempo and other elements of the music. Her walk-out on the Sonnambula conducted by Nello Santi is an example. His conducting was too slow and interfered with her phrasing and breathing. Pleads from Joan to play a bit faster were ignored. "The tempo is mine" is all he would say. Richard knew Joan's voice, and prepared with her. If Richard didn't conduct, she wouldn't sing.

  • @Hako2004 Quite right. Sure, Opera Houses decide who to hire to conduct. However Sutherland insisted on her husband conducting or she wouldn't sing. And since the opera houses wanted her and knew they could sell the tickets if she sang, they had no choice. He conducted to suit his wife's lack of breath control. What phrasing??? Hence the fast pace!! If he was any good himself they would have continued to hire him after she stopped singing. Which proves what I said. He was a lousy conductor!!

  • @Hako2004 If your idea of great belcanto is the Bonynge style you are very welcome to it!

The rest of us can enjoy the Toscanini, Serafin,Giulini, Karajan, de Sabata, Gui etc true belcanto styles.

And all those trills embellishments and cadenzas you find so thrilling were not composed by any decent composer but by none other than Bonynge, which is why they are so awful!!

Those composed by Donizetti, Rossini, or Bellini are wonderful if only people would leave them alone and not mutilate them

  • @Ariadne7710

The rest of us? By that, do you mean four other narcissistic cranks that feel only their view has merit? I don't always agree with everything Bonynge, but his interpretation of bel canto is as valid as anyone's. Serafin? You're truly ignorant. Richard and Joan went to Venice to PREPARE Lucia with Serafin. He had a deep understanding of bel canto history, and worked closely with them. Serafin had no equal as a conductor of Italian opera, and was delighted with Joan's Lucia.

  • @Hako2004 You won't find me disagreeing with you on Serafin. He was indeed The Master of belcanto in every possible way. Pity Bonynge didn't learn much from him!!!

  • @Ariadne7710 "Nothing to do with Lucia or her state of mind." A long time ago the term "mad" could have referred to a great number of things. Lucia just killed her future husband and is going crazy. Who are you to say what state of mind she's in? Crazy ("mad") people don't always act a certain way. Just because Dame Sutherland's interpretation of "mad" does not coincide with yours does not mean it is wrong or that it has nothing to do with Lucia's state of mind.

  • I would have died after that note too!

  • In real life, do you think Lucia would spend time in prison? lol

  • God, this resonated through my bones, it was so amazing. He expressiveness alone nearly did me in. Beautiful really doesn't cover it.

  • amazing! do you really think the likes of katherine Jenkins could keep up with this,I DONT THINK SO!!Jackie Evancho, lovely, try keepin up night after night, even my all time hero Pavarotti could not do that

  • My favourite high E-flat EVER!!!

  • no disrespect to Pavarotti, but how was Joan Sutherland's death not a bigger deal than his? Pavarotti was great, Sutherland was legendary.

  • @raigekimaru He himself said that her's was the greatest voice he ever heard.

  • @raigekimaru they both were the best at their respective part. Think of operatic singers. Now seperate the one's you know of into gender categories. I bet you know of more female ones than male

  • Moi je veux bien ! Mais depuis on a eu plus de tripes et plus de technique...Cela dit c'est incontestablement une référence... Brava !

  • No one could ever replace her.

  • EL DESEO DE LOS DIOSES......JOAN SUTHERLAND.........

  • Such power AND agility. So wonderfull. Those pops up and down are mind blowing. So clean it nearly seems impossible, even for a coloratura as myself. Its so often that we see women who are marvelous singers with either the agility and mechanical use, OR the power. She was truly a powerhouse. I can only aspire to achieve the amazingness that was you. Never will, but you give singers something to aspire to. RIP.

  • @SheenaBrnai that is so true, plus, for me, she had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard to go with all you describe!

  • Thanks for all youre records and the .... Handel opera's ""'La Stupenda"".

I m mis the beatifol moments and your kisses in Amsterdan and The Haegu.

  • viva la stupenda!

  • descanse en paz

  • RIP...Joan Sutherland 1926 - 2010

  • She made this opera her own. Even Maria Callas doesn't give this part gravitas like Joan.

May her memory and talent live on for ever. God Bless

  • RIP dame Joan. Thank you for sharing your wonderful gift!

  • R.I.P. Dame Joan!

  • One of the top singers ever,Rest in peace Dame Joan.Your voice, smile and gift is deeply missed in opera today...

  • Dame Joan passed a few hours ago.

R.I.P. We thnak you for what you have given to us!

  • The greatest voice in the history of opera! LA STUPENDA!!! RIP DAME JOAN SUTHERLAND 1926 - 2010

  • Joan Sutherland IS Lucia and always will be, may she rest in peace.

  • Rest in peace Dame Joan. She may not be an actress like Natalie or Diana but she surely had one of the greatest coloratura sopranos ever to grace a stage.

  • R.I.P. Dame Joan Sutherland (1926-2010)

  • Yes indeedJoan could coloratura better than anyone. Just listen to those trills.

  • I love her.. she is the best Lucia to me..

  • my friend and I were having a discussion about what we thought heaven and life after death would be like. so he asks "what do you think the angels will sound like?"

my reply being "well obviously, Dame Joan Sutherland" =)

  • My god... I almost fell out of my computer chair at 2:30 - 2:55

  • THIS IS CALLED PERFECTION !!! ALL VISITORS OR MEMBERS OF YOUTUBE SHOULDN'T MISS THIS VIDEO (WHETHER THEY ARE FANS OR NON FANS OF OPERA). IT SHOWS WHAT IS REAL ART, WHAT IS A GREAT VOICE AND A REAL DIVA - A STUPENDA !!!! Can't this vid be featured ?

    THX A LOT COLORATURAFAN

  • THIS IS CALLED PERFECTION !!!!!!

  • Truly amazing....!!

  • Now I understand why she was called THE STUPENDA....GREAT, CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL VOICE...GREAT TECNIC TOO..

  • La Stupenda, voice of the century.

  • I hope it's this dramatic when I die. lolz

  • EXCELLENT. A true DIVA

  • La Stupenda ha sido la mejor soprano del siglo pasado.

Hoy tenemos a la Dessay a la Damrau, y hasta hace muy poco a la fabulosa Devia.

  • Mr.STupendousluv,I too was captivated and amazed starting in the late 70's and haven't ever gotten over her or been let down in any way.Hearing this again gives the wondrous thrill of the first experiences. She's incomparable and magnificent. Will anyone come along to achieve anything close?I hope so,and am surprised by the void.Thank the gods we have SOME of the videos to remember her, wish there were more from this era(late 60's-early 70's)....

  • I think you are absolutely right....Her physique WAS heroic....You really understand this subject

  • Could there be a better voice in this world? I've been listening to this incredible woman for 27 years now, and i'm still well in English we have this silly word....flabbergasted! (or should I say: "in American" we have this word lol)? I Find her fascinating; in the 50's she had a voice absolutely bright and accurate and pristine, in the 60's a voice of tremendous power and unflagging stamina (and mushy diction sorry joan! lol ) then around '71 '72 emerged MY favortite...simple perfection ...

  • No voice or technique is above criticism, but Sutherland's was

the most remarkable voice of the last century. I still shake my head in amazement at what she could do....and for so long.

The instrument itself, a perfect extension of her heroic physique, was a miracle of nature.

  • This was the role that put Sutherland on the map! She's a singing machine! Her voice is not my favorite but in this role she is excellent.

  • Brava !!!

  • I agree with that, the 70s were the best for her!!! Now, could somebody tell me please WERE CAN I GET THIS DVD???? I can't find it in the internet and this is driving me crazy!

  • Bravissima!

In my opinion, the 70s were the best years of her voice.

  • Vocalement ,Incontestablement la plus grande. Sans rivales.

  • What an amazing voice! I get chills every time I hear her sing, she has a powerful yet beautiful voice!

  • That's a big part of what made her voice so rare....beautiful brillliant tone at the very top..... with power.

  • This video kind of shows how there are many different ways to play the madness part of this role. Sutherland's Lucia was "mad" in the sense that everything is unnaturally beautiful (except her face!) and flows easily (her runs and trills). This works perfectly fine if you don't prefer a "singing actress" in this role like Maria Callas or that French woman, Nasty Douche.

  • hehehe Nasty Douche!

  • "There is one God, and one Joan Sutherland".

  • I'm inclined to say that there has been thousands of Gods (although I would be more inclined to say ZERO) throughout the civilisations, but only one Joan Sutherland!

  • Verdaderamente impresionante ver y escuchar a Dame Joan Sutherland en sus mejores tiempos. Su voz es un tesoro y un regalo para el mundo. Thanks to coloraturafan because of this video.

  • glorius singing, undoubtfuly the best Lucia of the 20th Century. Possibly ever.

  • OMG, this is so stupid

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wrow!!! great, the ringing high note, the trills, very wonderful!

  • this is heaven!!! she's the best Lucia! that's for sure

  • Whatever can be say or not , SHE is the only ONE , and she won't never be approached in this part !!! She had the coloratura , the powerfull voice , and (sorry for those who are against) SHE had a real presence ON STAGE !!!! SHE is LA STUPENDA for EVER , tnaks you so much DAME JOAN and RICHARD !!! Bravo coloraturafan for all you job !!!!I am also "a coloraturafan in ....France !!!"

  • @motardbear15

why are you apologizing for being right? if people fail to recognize greatness, that's their own misfortune =)

  • Joan in the early to mid 70's is untouchable....my favorite, flexible with matchless POWER!!!Sublimenot of this world...

  • The BEST spargi d'amaro I've heard her sing. The BEST.

    2:43 - 2:53 is pure genius.

  • Is it live recording?

  • yes

  • Wow, really magnificent! 'Joan di Lammermoor'

  • Well...this is amazing. I say that every time I see a video of her's, but you can't say much more for the most perfect voice in recording voice.

  • *I meant recording HISTORY. Not voice. Sorry

  • I do think she was singing her best in the late 60's, early to mid 70's. STUPENDOUS!

  • Again, incomparable!Certainly it is not just the high e-flat.The voice just thrills you. And it is so unique. Once you hear the sound without looking at it, you could immediately recognise it is Joan's. Not many singers nowadays could have such impression to people. Also,Joan could express emotions though the voice which touched the deepest of our heart. That's why we love her so much!

  • A voice from the heavens!!!

  • a showpiece for sutherland, her E-flat and proof that she is the best coloratura sopranos of the later century. there are very few sopramno's who can hold an E-flat without ringing it-sutherland is one-her command on the set is steadfast and theatrical. thank you for the video. 10/10.

  • What exactly is 'ringing it?'

  • Comment removed

  • The voice of a goddess.

  • The size of that Eb is astounding. Her firmness of line and general vocal security was rare as well...that is what her accuracy and flexiblity were rooted in.

  • Thank you! What a voice...

  • I mean just listen to that E-flat!

    One of her best ever...

  • Again, Sutherland cannot be beaten in this role... i dont' think she ever will. simply, it is miraculous. A voice fit for Wagner singing Lucia's vocal line with an assurance and a flexibility that is incomrehensible in its virtuosity. Callas (1955) came close...

to think that Sutherlands was still doing this 'well' in the mid 1980's...lol. Genius.. nothing less. Thanks for post. regards,

  • might i just add very quickely... though the e-flat is astounding; there is much more to sutherlands voice that this note. Even without the high e she would still have been one of the most important singers in recored history. regards,

  • *quickly. Bel canto singing is not only about the Eb.

  • Thank you!!! Her Lucia is really perfect!

  • OMG THANK YOU

  • Thanks! Ive been looking for this since seeing clips of it on "Joan Sutherland: The Reluctant Prima Donna"

ColoraturaFan, You are a hot mess!

  • Bless you, colorturafan ... I've seen small pieces of this .... thank you for posting it, it's wonderful !

  • :-) I have uploaded that small clip. My ID was 'yglygl4545', but blocked ou by Youtube..

  • The baritone's voice is excellent! Anybody got a name?

  • OMG OMG OMG

coloraturafan, I don't know what to say!

    Thank you so much...
