  • A little trick when using a hand saw is using a tarp underneath the sawing of the log. All the work sawing and being able to use its sawdust will help start a fire quickly.

  • Hand axe for the win! I bring a saw and an axe with me every time I'm out in a winter environment. Cuts calorie expense down and doesn't need WD-40 :)

  • what do you think about using a kukri in this type of situation?

  • You're missing one of your best and easiest tools and you have it right in front of you. A wood wedge. You take that one piece of wedge shaped wood that naturally occurs when you break off the last part after sawing most of the way though and use it to split the other wood. Start it with the knife, but instead of fighting with it when the blade gets bound up, put that wedge in there and continue pounding.

  • you guys realise how much effort and time you would of saved with a proper 2 hand axe choppin that wood? lol

  • @SignedSign he could have brought a chainsaw too but i think the point is to keep weight down. you can use a big knife to do alot of things in the bush and in a survival situation. lugging around an axe just for wood processing wastes alot of calories and will slow you down. why carry a couple tools that can perform the same task? also, i think hes testing different makes and models in winter conditions. the knives their using might not be their "ideal" batoning blades.

  • @Nutnfancy I just made a mental note to my self Buy a Hatchet!

  • where's your axe?

  • the message behind this channel.. always carry WD-40

  • I have read on the comments that Nutn is homophobic from the way he is joking with his buddy. Maybe he is maybe he is not. But from my own personal experience guys joking like that between friends is just that, a joke! I have gay friends and even they joke around like that!. Not a big deal. All you folks out there complaining quit your PC crap and just enjoy the videos!

  • 8:46 sorry =P

  • 8:12 is like me getting my cat off my leg when she is pissed with me

  • dudes i would recomend u bring a small hatchet with ya for the spliting prosses. now im not sayin anythin against usin the knives and such but sometimes its just easier and uses much less energey to use an ax then a knife or longer blade of some sort. keep up the "wild" vids. yes i know very bad pun

  • Awesome Vids, Would love to see one on how to build a combat shelter.

  • unless you haven't seen it yet, Sawvivor is making a 18 in and 15in models.not sure which you are using, but if it's the 15in you might want to consider upgrading. (just thinking about the commentary around the start of this vid) great job, love your videos.

  • well, if I ever see snow, am ever in a place like that, and happen to have a knife and some wd40, I won't be completely useless now :-)

  • also, use wood wedges to open the log and get the knife out.

  • what is the name of that saw? (and the price?)

  • @knifemakejake

It's the Sawvivor Amazon has them for about $30. I bought it (damn you Nutn!) and it rocks! Feather-light and aggressive on the cut. Worth the money for sure.

  • Nice batoning.

  • nutn is a bigger potty mouth than he lets on in his videos

  • Why dont you carry an axe? It might be a bit larger and heavier but i would think that it would make batoning a lot easier

  • red green show= a imag of my life

  • Your doggy is the best in this video :) I like how you trained her.

    BOOGITY BOOGITY! :):):)

  • nice vids by the way, thx.

  • splitting that wood with a knife looks a lot harder than with an axe...

  • @stopt1me, they are hardly saying anything that horrible, these videos are not for kids... I'd imagine the knife usage is much worse for a child's psyche then the word "pisses", television is much worse for kids than any of this.

  • love the vids mate keepem comeing

  • 17degrees fahrenheit -8 celsius

  • i love this fire in snow series! great videos. i learned alot from this thank you!

    -andrew

  • ya, but it does have a name right?

  • awww i love that dog he is so cute

  • Great videos, very educational and fun to watch.

  • @mudvayne609 They're not "anti-gay" remarks. Stop being so sensitive. Men use these terms as a joke because they don't want to be seen as weak or effeminate. Not to say that all gay men are weak or effeminate, that's ridiculous. But, that is the image most men envision with that term. It would be the same thing if they said,"I don't want to look like a girl." Let's face it, many gay men are effeminate and proud of it so, you should'nt be offended.

  • I ALWAYS THINK IT IS ALWAYS HANDY TO USE A AXE UNTIL YOU GET IT DOWN TO A FEARLY SMALL PIESES

  • this is what i call hardwood xD awesome vid dude and a cool team u guys are

  • No offence guys but a nice sharp axe would save alot of time and energy.

  • @JeffSal999 Axe sucks on cross-cuts deep in the woods during winter. You spend much more energy swinging an axe vs. just sawing right through it not to mention the carry weight. Splitting the wood though could have been made a bit easier with something like an ESEE Junglas vs. the smaller knives they were using back when this video was published. The Junglas was not available back then. Miles into the woods, a sawvivor, a Junglas, and a couple small pocket knives is the best way to go.

  • Do you use comando saw wire? It is small and lightweight but i personally never used it

  • did it break? the knife...

  • bacho,do a joiners/carpenters wood saw that break down to seperate pieces, cons it may be a bit bulky ,but would eat those tree logs

  • Red-Green is pretty sweet haha!

  • hi there nutn i loved this video i live in scotland so trying to make a fire in scotland is hard as it is usually raining and 17degrees thats freakin warm dude right now we r in january and is -7 the worst it was allwinter was -24 anyway keep the vids cumming and and always another awsome video for the awsome nutnfancy

  • How did you train your dog?

  • It's funny how NutNFancy confuses his knife names with RAT 7 and K-Bar. And I confuse the RAT 7 knife with my Rat 7 computer gaming mouse.

  • You need a Fiskars axe with a fibreglass handle they are awesome and sharp and weigh next to nothing, possibly less than those combined selection of knives you got there.

I enjoy these videos but homo comments are lowering peoples opinion of you it would seem.

  • axe is way better for splitting logs..regular army survival axe is perfect. Id rather burn the calories carrying it than not have it at all..

  • Red Green would have made a whole house from duct tape and old washing machine parts in the time it took you to make this video.

You don't look like a "homo." They would be dressed as warmly as you, but would somehow make it look stylish.

  • i love how you guys actually show the sheer amount of work that goes into preparing a fire in the out of doors people always seem to underestimate the importance of preparation when in the woods, jungle ,etc

  • @PrettyGreatStuff That's a good point. I was out hiking recently and was asked to provide the fire, now this meant me doing a ton of prep work. After a while my hiking buddy said "that's enough firewood" because the noise of sawing was getting on his nerves. What a dickhead, the firewood aint going to cut itself.

  • @misternylon well if he wants a fire THEN MAKE HIM DO IT!!!

  • for splitting big logs like this an axe is just easier and faster

  • Hey so do you think the SOG Seal pup elite would hold up as well as the Rat 7?

  • you guys waste to much energy sawing that wood..i would saw 1/2 then back chop then snap it with my boot.......just sayin

  • Oh, "RED GREEN SHOW" he is from Vermont not Can. Nowe if you wear Mil. Tec rip stop Pants lger then what you wear and then layer it with Long johns and wool pants work real well or long johns and pj pants and wool socks keeps you very warm. Oh, you also should say something about main areas that need to be protected (head feet hands)

  • Look at the dog so smart. reminds me of simba, my old golden retriever who past away.

  • @BeKoolFool Great name, Simba. We had a chowchow named Simba years ago... -- Veri

  • ONE THOUGHT; not sure if it is because you are nearing the end of your career, but it seems you are not nearly as careful to abstain from profanity, even things like "pisses me off". Please remember that the early Nutnfancy persona is what brought you to this dance, and you have a huge following of kids. Many of us would not want our kids watching videos of folks even mildly cursing. The rest of us are all grown up, many vets, but kids in the audience are the lowest common denominator.

  • why didnt you conserve energy and just feed the long tree limbs into the fire ?? not being negative but just seems so much easier , john

  • AHHH the old fall back. thats what she said! the universal millitary come back LOL

  • Iv cut my self few times quite bad when i was trying to get my blade out from the log i was splitting. I used smaller knives tho, i dont know if thats an issue with larger blades, but be carefull.

  • I'm a 25 year old city woman who has been watching your videos, and learning so much! I live in Colorado, and watching these videos really inspires me to go out and experience the beauty of my state, and learn to be more self reliant. However, I do have to say that the "gay" comments are troubling and distracting.

  • @KaraokeMary It's humor. When I showed this to my friends (who happen to be homosexual) they were laughing their asses off. It's not a big deal to a lot of gay people when two het guys joke about one being gay. It would be like myself (IQ136)and my friend in mensa (Iq 141) joking about one of us being retarded. You know why it's funny? it's taking something they are obviously not and saying they are and then when you compare the statement to the reality it's funny. It's not a bag on gay people.

  • @Daytonaman675 Yes, thank you. I am, oddly enough, familiar with the concept of humor. However, I'd think someone with an IQ of 136 might be aware of the finer nuances of derogatory humor (i.e. the implication that being "homo" is an insult). Many, for instance, find the term "retarded" offensive. I'm afraid I simply don't find it funny, only distracting and slightly unsettling. Apologies if I sound caustic, but as a Mensa member myself, I become annoyed when people talk to me like a child.

  • @KaraokeMary They are two old buddies who joke alot, about everything, dont like it, go away.

If you can deal with it, you will learn a ton.

  • @Kylef7735 I'm pretty sure I expressed in my original comment that I WAS learning a lot and dealing with it. But I also think that the common assumption with these videos is that only men with a conservative political stance are interested in this subject matter. I wanted to say that I am a (socially) liberal woman who is just as interested and happy to have the chance to learn, but when things like that crop up, it subtracts from it.

"Go away" isn't that inspiring, FYI. What do you care?

  • @KaraokeMary Im suprised you are still a nutnfancy fan with all the reviews he does of horrible scary tactical guns and gear.

  • wow i know its a sawvivor now...

  • these videos are great and i find them very valuable. this being said i find your homophobia disturbing...

  • @AidanMaybe agreed on both points.

  • @AidanMaybeHomophobia? Are you serious?Your sensitivity to jokes is ridiculous!!

  • @AidanMaybe I find homosexuality disturbing!!!

  • @JeffSal999

good to know some the background of the fellow TNPer. Lets hope they aren't all like you.

  • @AidanMaybe

    good comment

  • @AidanMaybe The PC fad ended in the 90s, so they say queer or homo every now and then, there's nothing malicious about it. It's just two old friends making fun of eachother using the language that was standard from their youth.

  • @AidanMaybe That's the funniest part.

  • It's guys like these that are completely screwing up the forest. Is that WD40?! Survival skills?! Really. I don't find it funny at all - probably because these guys seem serious about what they're doing. Have I missed something?

  • hahaha you two are too funny

  • I know I have said this on other reviews. but i just do not see the advantage of batoning to using a small axe. it took two people and a lot of effort to chop a small amount of wood. to each there own i guess. Keep up the good work. have become a huge fan of TNP.

  • Like the Canadian Reference!

  • why do u call her "dog"?

  • @aochs12 Because thats what she is.....

  • RED GREEN SHOW, haven't seen that snow in so long.

    ICBFR. INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC FISHING ROD

  • its good videos guys but ive been trying to learn survival skills were i would find myself stuck somewhere without any technology or gear how would you make a fire then?

  • Hey nutn, i got a question for ya. i own a Winchester bowie knife, very sharp and i love this knife13 inches overall, and ultra sharp once i took my chef's knife sharpener to it, and it can cleave right through sticks and twigs, its 400 stainless, do you reccomend using that type of steel for batoning? or should i just carry my hatchet? Thanks for your input!

  • Nice job guys. Thanks for mentioning the gear but 40 min of you all sawing was to much. I could have skipped to video 4 from 1. Nice job any ways!

  • Looks like a waist of energy to cut all those logs so small. I think I would have cut them in six foot lengths and burned them in half and then just flipped the halves into the fire.

  • this is why firewood heats you twice...

  • it is always great to have team mate with you out in the wild, make the work go quicker and adds an addition layer of security. both are military and your familarity shows in the footage .. just allitte much of the sawing lol .. yes it did demonstrate the reality of an outing. made me alugh alot .. Allie reminds me so much of my dog, Maxx , who passed a few years back. loved to camp and rough it in new areas, made friends where ever he went. great vids dudes

  • I LOVE the red green show!

  • call them arm chair trolls

  • isn't it a pain in the ass to saw wood with a handsaw?

  • @FlamingFury5 Not nearly as much of a pain in the ass as it is to carry a chainsaw.

  • You guys should really buy an axe to chop the wood.

  • @ZkerWel Too heavy to carry.

  • at 8:28, use an axe

  • @Freddiie97 Too heavy to carry an axe as far as they went.

  • Comment removed

  • Yall CW'S?

  • great vids ...but not a huge fan of all the anti gay stuff...i get that its light but it could be considered very offensive

  • @TUNIQlifestyle only to politically correct anal retentive snobs like you

  • Comment removed

  • thats what she said HAHAHA

  • cool video as always but what got to me was Allie. My black lab loved the snow as well but passed away not too long ago. She seems like a great dog, labs are the best!

  • Lovin what you guys are doin, havin a really good time out there. just something i use when battonong with a knife.it can sometines take some of the effort out of going thru the bigger logs but using a wedge.knife in and wedge to follow. Mind you giving those knfes that much grief is great seeing what they can take.perhaps combine the two.Oh yeah one more you might like. try a bow saw, you can make one out of wood, it's light long and you'll save even more calories, packs flat. Thanks for post

  • i have never seen snow you guys are freaking lucky

  • why dont u use doble-handed saw ? it woud take just two minutes fore a log like this

  • woohoo!! Red Green Show!! Canadian mention!! Nutnfancy you should come film some videos in Canada!!

  • thanks nutn you turned me on to using wd40 in the woods and now everybody in home depot gives me dirty looks when the 16 yr old asks where the wd40 is hahaha

  • That batoning looks like a lot of work. I agree that a good survival knife should be able to take the abuse, but I think I'd prefer a wood axe to sawing/batoning. To each his own I guess.

  • wow i really like that rtek !! How much did it cost you? I am surprised nothing happned to it when u chop wood with it :P

  • Why don't you care to carry a small campers axe? They weigh about 3-4 lbs. and are easily carried on your pack. You show it can obviously be done well with only a good knife-knives but it just seems like you could cut your labor in half with an axe. Great video! Thanks for posting.

  • hahahaha gay sweater cap!..jesus these videos make sitting at work so much easer..fishing is right round the corner :D

  • hahah need a little smaller long to hit with at the end your firend hit the wood a little more then the knife haha good vid man i subscribed to hope to see lots more vids

  • dude nutn :) dont diss canada :P BC where im from we got nothin but trees its about a 10 min walk from my house to get into woods like where you are :P

  • splitting wood on the ground is hard work, most people put it on a block or a tree stump as its far left effort.

    Bad technique......but Nice dog :)

  • Hey dude! Love your vids!

You should review some tomahawks. What do you think about tomahawks as survival tools?

  • Nutn! i need your help! i don't know which one i should get, the RAT7 or RD7?! you recommended both you said you love the RAT but you also gave the RD9 the RD7's bigger bro! i just don't know!

  • QUESTION: Besides being lazy, Would there be anything wrong to get a fire started with that easy wood you guys at the begging (1/2 ways thru the tree)... building up a good fire, and then just throwing the rest of the tree (by the middle part) in the already built up fire...instead of chopping the entire tree??? Not making fun, just trying to learn from y'all

  • good stuff there, but about the choice of knife steel i want to say that i like the cheap "spring steel" knifes for such hard work. yes they dont hold edge good at all, i have a smal fine grained grinding stone for that with me, BUT spring steel can take a LOT of punishment in ways of flexing and bending and it allways gets back to "neutral". its not hard but also in no way brittle so to say. and they are cheap!!! so if you loose one, you fork out 30 bucks and get a new one. keep it up good one!

  • when your knife gets binded up like that when spitting i find shoving a stick thats wider then the blade in there then forcing it down will open up the log enough to get your blade out

  • buggetnuster looks lke an astronaut with his hood on. lol

  • I realize I am opening myself up to lewd humor, but a black lab is a great cuddle buddy in the mountains!

  • Aw! They're great cuddle bunnies! I still laugh about Bugget's quote, "I am a spoonin' fool." :D -- Veri

  • The best mountain buddy I ever had died years ago, but they are all anxious to get close and they always know whats going on before I do. I watch the dog!!! Whiskers :)

  • I'm sorry about your mountain buddy, my choc lab died years ago too, and now I have house buddies. I'm lucky to get a place in the bed, though..they DO like to cuddle! -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy rescued a choco lab!!!! This girl chases all the birds. So exited to start training...... she knows basic commands... but she cannot stay still when she scents...... it's on........... her name is "Hershey." She was obviously abused but we love her... she knows whats up....... BUDDY! Smiley dog here in TX.

  • @kd0bgz Oh kd, that is so awesome. Spend a lot of time with her and give her a while to settle down and you will never, ever regret it. Big *high five* for rescuing Hershey. =0 ) -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy i thought this was about firemaking, but i had to wait through 40 minutes of bullshit

  • do you think the rat-7 would be a all around good outdoors knife

  • stopped it within 49 seconds b/c this HAS to be said

Fancy, you need to make a point about wool

It is THE ONLY fabric (that I know of) that when wet, will still insulate. Pretty sure that in a light rain, once a small layer of water is on it, it insulates BETTER!

    It dries easily

Merino wool will not irritate your skin

I feel naked when I'm wearing it, it's so light.

There might be some other points to but I'm just making sure ppl know Wool is the cold weather KING!

  • Kudos to you Mr. Nutnfancy. I wish I had the resources to do what you do.

  • more lube lol...lol never seen anything like this.just have to see all the episodes just love this loube spray guys. crazy .i would give you guys 6 days in the wild

  • @bovaa wat

  • remember boys use spray loube .did you learn this in the army???hmmm

  • For a saw, go look for a large arborist folding triming saw. It will fold into itself for safety, and you can get them up to a 10 inch blade. The teeth are offset, which will make the cut easier.

  • A gurka will be the last knive you test.

  • i get u Nutn i got a friend who's all bout how everything has a technique..it's hittin a knife with a stick not baking brownies

  • you naughty naughty tree you... haha

  • I notice the huge amount of WD40 you go through sawing. I also notice you spray both sides of the saw blade, and that you do it as you get to the center of the log. If you get a good cut in, and then spray the inside of the cut with lube, wouldn that be just as good?

  • would you recommend using the kabar USMC knife for this kind of work?

  • yes

  • really?

  • i just love how u bust on buggetnuster. " i dont want to look like a homo" lmao.

  • Ur dog is so smart lol

  • I could easily split that last section with my axe.

yes, wood processing is important. and you did get it done. but not in what i would call a quick, or efficient manor.

  • @dreamthinker79 how long do u think it would have taken u with your axe? and how do u cary it when u go out?

  • @dreamthinker79 Blah blah blah ax blah blah blah.

  • hahaha ^^^^^ " I didn't wanna look like a homo until I absolutely had to"

  • I think he should have started cutting from the thick end of the log first when he was fresh with energy. It also takes less energy to hold on to the thinner part as you get to end because your using the weight of the tree as you go along.

  • also, i find that in the snow, ill just burn the logs in half. yes you still have to process maybe half a tree, but if you just do the top end, just burn the rest man, makes it way, way, way, less work.

  • what do you mean burn the log in half

  • we call those "sweater-caps" 'tuques' up in canada.

...still not sure why you americans dont have a name for those yet...

  • @spiderpig85 - we do, their called sweater caps.

  • @Kopis1911 tuque is easier. try it.

  • @spiderpig85 - haha, actually, it depends on where you go in the US. Near me, we call those "beanies" or "stocking caps". My comment was a play on your comment so lets just agree to disagree.....eh?

  • @Kopis1911 lol alright

  • This series is great, really good fun to watch.

    Thanks for posting!

  • Reg Green is awesome!

  • ...thats what she said, lol

    these guys like to cut-up

  • still a great vid to watch when you have time to watch

  • is this brokeback mountain 2

  • lol

  • That's a beauty Red Green plug, eh? But don't be a hoser, eh - that's not a "sweater hat", eh - its a TOQUE! ;)

  • LOL! Take off! :D -- Veri

  • Good one! How do you know so much abOOt Canadian stuff, eh?

  • From Bob and Doug MacKenzie! ;) -- Veri

  • You're an honorary Canuck in my books anyway :D Don't tell me you're into hockey too, lol

  • Lord no hockey, I'm too into teeth! Love ice skating, though..not very good at it. ;) -- Veri

  • I suck at it, but I guess the upside is having all my teeth - score for me:D (that's a TOOTHY grin, by the way ;) )

  • What ?? is he wearing a sheep ??

  • ROFL!! -- Veri

  • I just spent almost an hour watching you two saw wood, wtf am I doing.

  • LOL! Now you know how I feel. Maybe we have been hypnotized? -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • @born68 WTHF is right i did the same dam thing.

  • 11:31 is that a beer can in the background?!

  • Knowing Nutn, no.. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • Wy? Does he not drink? More power to him.

  • Can you picture Nutn humping all those empty calories up there? ;) -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • What are B's Gloves?
