AVATAR has pushed CGI to the next level. I want to tell something, no matter how hard they do there is something lacking because its not real. I have researched on CGI for all most 3 yrs what i found was u cant cheat real world. CGI is still in its infancy even now after avatar. There still lots to be done to make it look real. Maybe in next 100 yrs it may become possible.

I think what he means is it is like this generations star wars. at the time there were people of all ages coming out of star wars like there was NOTHING to compare it to because it was beyond it's years. Anything about quest, escape, revenge, underdog, transformation, sacrifice etc ties into the above plots.

To settle the starwars vs avatar debate: Both were groundbreaking. But Star Wars was groundbreaking in effects and storytelling (Hoky as it was) and Avatar is just groundbreaking in effects. The storytelling is very, very good - don't get me wrong - but by rights it should be, the same story has been told so many times already. (Dances with wolves, Pocahontas, etc)

Dude, I'm gonna buy the movie when it comes out (provided i acquire a 3D television by that point.)  It was worth the 9.50 just to see such amazing 3D. But arguing that the story was worth more than a homeless person's shit on the sidewalk is just naive. There are ways to tell age-old, simple stories without having the movie suck. See Braveheart, The Godfather, Last of the Mohicans, etc.

This was a good (if somewhat long) movie. It is more about exploring an alien culture and world than the evils of corporations and the military. In fact, i would say the battle at the end is the least engaging part of the film. I recommend it to everyone, at least as a renter.

it wasnt the deepest story, nor was it a new (same thing in fast and furious 1, last samurai, etc) but i think james did a good job in telling the story, that is what makes the movie trustworthy.

I would argue that todays CGI looks real. Avatar is newer and better, but you can still tell its animated.

But think about this. The Greeks perfected the art of sculpting... they pushed the art so far till they reached perfection. then: it was boring because it was too real.

I think too real CGI (if you consider this movie real) is also less interesting.

Unless you use CGI for complicated shots etc. or like pixar does to create caracters.

Guys, Lucas and ILM really pushed the envelope in computer graphics in Episodes I, II and III. By that time (1994) Lucas foresaw that the involved technology and approaches should be taken after by other directors. And voila! Although this film looks pretty awesome, this is NOT something new, I identify many elements from Starwars saga.

I'm gonna wait and see with this. Nothing has impressed me about it yet. So far it seems like all hype to me. He spent so much time and money that he has to carpet bomb us with marketing instead of letting the film speak to us on its own merit.
