If the NHL had not expanded to Tampa I probably would have never watched a single game of hockey. I was 12 yrs old when the Lightning started play in the NHL. I honestly cannot believe cities like Hartford, Quebec, and Winnipeg have lost their teams and Tampa has one. I would be devastated if the Bolts were taken from Tampa Bay but knowing that those other 3 cities have suffered from it. It only seems like a matter of time before it happens.

Cuz you gotta remember the whalers were a WHA team before they were a part of the NHL. they had a bigger fan base as a WHA team because people from boston would root for the bruins and the whalers (2 different leagues so it didn't matter). but when they moved to the NHL, people wanted to stick with their own teams. Most whaler fans were probably just whaler fans from the WHA that didn't root for an NHL franchise team. Just the wrong area to market to is all.
I had a rough childhood being a hockey fan from connecticut. I have a vague recollection of my dad taking me to a nighthawks game. I was probably only 6 or 7......Then when I was only 11, just getting old enough to enjoy hockey, the Whalers packed up and left.
New Haven hockey didnt fare very well in my life time, the Beast (AHL) then the Knights(UHL) both failed after only a few seasons...then I had to witness the Coliseum get imploded. :(

I could see the Boston Bruins play a couple of "home" games in Hartford each year, but that would be the only way the NHL would return to Connecticut, and I can't even see that realistically happening.

I don't think you quite understand where the Islanders play. It's not NYC so I am not sure what "city" you are talking about. They play in what is easily the smallest market in the US, so yeah sometimes we are going to have some poor attendance. But go watch any video from the series against Toronto from a few years back or during any playoff series and you'll see the true passion of NYI hockey.

Last season, I read about quite a few Islander games where they only had 9,000 in attendace. I have been to their arena before, it is not a very nice place. That probably has something todo with it. At one point it was raining inside the building. I also had to sit on a metal foldup chair.
Florida is arguable, that team might be in trouble in a few years, but NYI.. seriously? their attendance the last 3 seasons average between 12,800 and 13,700, The AHL team in Winnipeg gets more than that sometimes!
Just not right....The Whale is yet another franchise that should never have moved. Fans loved the team dearly and the NHL out of sheer greed and stupidity allowed them to move. They along with Winnipeg WILL be back!
We miss the rivalry we had with Hartford here in Buffalo. It just isn't the same with Carolina. Hartford was a hockey town, Carolina just doesn't get it. Same with Quebec and the Nordiques, those old Adams Division games were wars.

In Connecticut, the big spectator sports are University of Connecticut men's and woman's basketball.
There wasn't enough fan interest to keep the Whalers in Hartford.
In fact, minor-league hockey and baseball teams in Connecticut have problems filling up the stands.

Im a bruins fan but I say bring back the Whale...I really do miss them, and put a team back in winnipeg what a stupid idea to go to phoenix Winnipeg had no problem with lack of fans as we see in phoenix now what a jk. Take a team away from a rabid fan base and give them to an area that could care less...good job Gary bettman for allowing this.

i know that this video kinda defeats the purpose of this comment because of the packed stadium, but on any normal day, the whalers had average 1/3 of the stadium full. no real support. people obviously liked the whalers, but look at the area they played in. you got the bruins in boston (huge fanbase), and both the islanders and rangers in new york. those teams were their long before the whalers were an NHL team. so when they joined the NHL, everyone was already a fan of another team. Cuz you gotta remember the whalers were a WHA team before they were a part of the NHL. they had a bigger fan base as a WHA team because people from boston would root for the bruins and the whalers (2 different leagues so it didn't matter). but when they moved to the NHL, people wanted to stick with their own teams. Most whaler fans were probably just whaler fans from the WHA that didn't root for an NHL franchise team. Just the wrong area to market to is all.

I had a rough childhood being a hockey fan from connecticut. I have a vague recollection of my dad taking me to a nighthawks game. I was probably only 6 or 7......Then when I was only 11, just getting old enough to enjoy hockey, the Whalers packed up and left.
New Haven hockey didnt fare very well in my life time, the Beast (AHL) then the Knights(UHL) both failed after only a few seasons...then I had to witness the Coliseum get imploded. :(
maybe the NHL will come back someday. (prob not)

@PeteMcC11 I have heard about plans to rename the minor-league Hartford Wolfpack the Hartford (or Connecticut) Whale, but nothing about an eventual NHL return.
I could see the Boston Bruins play a couple of "home" games in Hartford each year, but that would be the only way the NHL would return to Connecticut, and I can't even see that realistically happening.

@altfactor nope, their not planning to rename the Wolfpack, the wolfpack will be moving to Norwhich when the contract expires and the CT (Hartford) Whalers will be back as a minor league team untill they can work back into the NHL =) at least thats the plan I'v been hearing

My #1 team from 1989-1997 and I'm from The Montreal (Quebec,Canada) area. I was the only Whalers fan and a lot of people just hate me at school and making jokes to me...I still have on them. In Carolina they win the Stanley Cup in 2006.

it would be great to see the whalers back in the league! move phoenix back to Winnipeg or bring them to Connecticut. If my atl thrashers ever moved "which there could be a possibility, if they dont start to turn the franchise around" then I would have to move up north!

Islanders are you kidding me? The Islanders have such a longer and greater history then any of those teams. Look up how many NHL teams have won 4 cups in a row. It's not many. How many teams have done it in any other professional sports league? Not alot. So don't you dare say that the Islanders should not be in the NHL. It may have been a while since we last one a playoff series but we have a solid group of young players and a great hardcore fanbase.

hard core fan base?? havint a league low average attendance at around 13 000 is not a hard core fan base.. some games were paid attendance as low as 8000. so i will dare say they do not belong in NHL. a city of that size has no excuse to have that poor of attendance.

I don't think you quite understand where the Islanders play. It's not NYC so I am not sure what "city" you are talking about. They play in what is easily the smallest market in the US, so yeah sometimes we are going to have some poor attendance. But go watch any video from the series against Toronto from a few years back or during any playoff series and you'll see the true passion of NYI hockey.

Last season, I read about quite a few Islander games where they only had 9,000 in attendace. I have been to their arena before, it is not a very nice place. That probably has something todo with it. At one point it was raining inside the building. I also had to sit on a metal foldup chair.

Florida is arguable, that team might be in trouble in a few years, but NYI.. seriously? their attendance the last 3 seasons average between 12,800 and 13,700, The AHL team in Winnipeg gets more than that sometimes!

We miss the rivalry we had with Hartford here in Buffalo. It just isn't the same with Carolina. Hartford was a hockey town, Carolina just doesn't get it. Same with Quebec and the Nordiques, those old Adams Division games were wars.
