  • I love this guy! Remember watching through all his DF videos a long time ago. :)

    Great stuff capt'n!

  • How do you pause the game? i cant figure it out!!

  • Dwarf Fortress is not original either. It's a bunch of other roguelikes combined with Dungeon Keeper and a couple of new things sprinkled on top.

  • I just want to say, captnduck, your videos are awesome. I used to watch your DF tutorials a few years ago, and now I've started playing Towns, and there you are again, helping me out. Thx man.

  • Nice little game, I might get it eventually, thanks for the tutorial :)

  • I forgot to check your channel after a while. Seems like quite a few videos have come out. Congrats to you. You definitely got my sub :)

  • So this is to DF like Infiniminer is to Minecraft? I like how these games "inspired" of the free original always have a price tag...

  • @anonekro how dare they make money on a game they've put much effort into

  • @Trakheed

You don't seem to see the problem here. I'll explain. Person A has a great and original idea, spends much time and effort developing the idea and decides that he wants to share his idea (and efforts) with others for free (or he could sell it). Person B sees that this is a great idea, takes it a changes it around a slight bit and then sells it to make money. Notch ripped off Inifiniminer and now these people are trying to do the same with DF.

  • @anonekro modern day cars are inspired by Henry Ford's original model T car, doesn't mean they ripped him off. DF has no user friendly interface and is a pain to master, but with this game, they have several people working on it, including a dedicated graphic designer to make icons, sprites, etc. to make it more enjoyable, these people deserve the money, but that's just my opinion. You could torrent this if you want, but i choose to buy it and support the developers

  • @Trakheed

Except that Henry Ford made a fortune of of his ideas. DF is a freeware game made by gamers for gamers. Just because it's still in production and doesn't have a user-friendly interface, doesn't give someone else the right to steal the idea, casualise it and market it to the general public as their own for the purpose of making loads of money, a la Notch. Sure, it's not against any law, but to me it's very distasteful and these people will not get a cent from me.

  • @anonekro I think the idea is it wont be just a dwarf fortress clone and the idea is to make something new and different to stand out from the rest.

By asking for money they can hire on new people or quit their jobs and do gaming full

    time.

They are looking at a 2012 release window for full version then on to another idea.

-besides, the game borrows from not only DF, but also Diablo, Dungeon Keeper, Evil Genius, and even Theme Hospital

  • @anonekro actually, no. DF is to this as Infiminer is to Minecraft.

  • I like how it doesn't take very long for you to simply accept them as Dworfs : )

Iteration is the mother of excellence as we say in Game Dev.

  • Survivors of Ragnarok next? I hear its like a 2d side scroller Dwarf Fortress/Terraria

  • Saw this on Desura! Wasn't sure if it was any good... and then you make a video! Genius!

  • dwarf fortress, minecraft - best "random sandbox games" eva

  • HUNAMS!

  • Haha, every time when music starts playing, i hear metallica - fade to black. XD

  • 10 Euros = TWENTY THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS

  • Hey cap'n duck, have you played terraria?

  • "THIS GAME IS VERY DEFINITELY DWARF FORTRESS INSPIRED"

Holy fucking shit dude we get it, say something else.

  • CaptnDuck explaining another game? Awwww yeah. Got my winter time snacks with me, gonna listen to him explain some in-depth construction sim game like DF, and wish I had a cool accent.

  • The art direction has gone a bit too "facebook" for me. I may or may not keep an eye on it in the future.

  • Good video, I also recently finally started getting games on Desura and like the direction the service is going. Check out Koya Rift, it has some nice Roguelike'ish elements going for it and I think Desura is pretty much the place for the game same as Towns.

  • Good job, captnduck. The guys on Towns forums mentioned you'd be doing a video, so here I am :D

  • O man! this game looks awesome :O I may have to get it XD

  • it makes me think of haven and hearth (wich btw you should RLY try out), so its my kind of game :p

  • Hey man, been meaning to check this game out after hearing about it in comments on your videos. Thanks for the vid :)

  • This looks nice. I havnt played much DF simply because its so hard to understand it all. This seems like something that might be good to play first.

  • CaptnDuck uploading a Towns tutorial video; now this one I didn't see coming. ^.^

  • naw man, the graphics are even worse! no, stick to df

  • I'd like to see a FPS dorf fortress.

  • @insertclichename That was where the inspiration for minecraft came from... Got way more credit than it deserved I think.

  • how do you get more dwarves

  • @theconner23 New civilians come around when you have enough personal bedrooms and allow some idle time (no orders to fulfil). Making your civilians work without a break will scare all the potential settlers away

  • do a LP if this please!

  • @velprox1 This is just a single video for now. I'm still busy with TAG and DF. Besides there

's not much more to talk about then what's in this video at this point in the alpha.

  • Lots of haters. Dwarf Fortress is the best game ever. But not only that, it's one of the best ideas ever. If people take that concept, and make games based on it, then the idea gets better and improves. That's the basis of all game design.

  • @landeyda Exactly. The gaming industry is where it is today because developers have time and again (but not always) capitalized on an innovation and refined it.

  • @landeyda

That's the basis for all things pretty much.

  • At 24:40, your scroll over what looks like some coal on the surface.

It's directly up from your buildings, about the same distance from the river as your town, but on the other side.

  • @bur1t0 Yeah i noticed that to, when i rewatched the video. Oh well.

  • Babys first dwarf fortress.

  • Thanks for showing us, Captain!

  • looks awesome, thank you captnduck for showing :D

  • So a dumbed down, casual version of Dorf Fort? Never change, babbies.

  • defo' giving it a try

  • wow, that looks awesome.
