I know Shanghai very well and I can assure you that one doesn't need to go to a "secret" house, up a flight of stairs and wheel and deal behind closed doors to score fake stuff. In fact, these people were really stupid to go into that place at all.
Walking from one end of the pedestrian section to the other, if you look western, you will get offers. I(I'm an American) have walked up and down the street at least 15 different times in the past two months and on average I will get offers from on average 12 people. I get offers for stuff like bags, shoes, watches, iphones, and even for cannabis.
