  • They didn't say why the Celts went on to sack Rome. The Romans came as ambassadors to make "peace" with the Celts. However at the siege of Clusium, 391 B.C they recognized the exact ambassadors who came to them helping their enemies. They told Rome of the treachery of their ambassadors; Rome ignored their complaint because the ambassadors were the sons of Fabius Ambustus. Since the complaint went unheeded, they went and sacked Rome (leaving other towns untouched) & made them pay a fine.

  • To the top comment, racism back then is more due to nature where we as humans naturally identify with those similar to ourselves as an extended kinship, this is a survival tool to encourage group cohesion, that's why Lions don't go hanging around with Tigers or Leopards if you get my drift? but yes the Romans were very right wing lol.

  • The Celts were a force to be reckoned with!

  • payback is a bisquit!! those human sacrifycing celts finally met latin power, and paid for their attrocities under the hand of Julius caesar.

  • Wikipedia is saying Diodorus Siculus is Greek.

  • Some historians say that Rome came to be such a military power because it was constantly trying to fend off the Celts. France at the time was Gaul...a completely celtic land. as was most of England all of Ireland...parts of Czechoslovakia, The Balkans, Greece, Turkey....these guys had all the power in pre-recorded Europe. I believe their downfall came from their illiteracy.

  • VIKING

  • @ChaosDynamics Who isn't? ;D

  • If I were in an ancient Celtic tribe I would probably be a bard. I <3 History!! :D

  • Sounds like our Celts ancestors were some kind of hippie warriors

  • @drydust999 They were the best type of hippies. "If you destroy our shit we will destroy you!" :D

  • racism exist from a long long time and the media of today have convince you that race (or sub-races if you want) does'nt exist people said the only race that exist is the human races but its false because example all dogs "species" come from a only race the dog race but they have multiple species and really differents apperances like poodle and a doberman come from the same race but they are really different. i doesnt same this race is better than this race ets but i said that we are different.

  • That is such bull, the Celts were not illiterate, they used three different alphabets, they choose not to write anything of the religious practices to keep the value of the stories. I would not relay on very much of this information as accurate........

  • @TheCauthBodva Celtic language wasn't written down till they were around Spain and the British Isles. It wasn't till the early AD they wrote down Language

  • @skatepunkzero No I am sorry you are wrong, they have found Gualish poems and fragments of records dating back to the time of the Gaulish Wars and earlier. I have about 100+ history books on the Celts, and yes they did use 3 alphabets, yes they did write things down, just not anything to do with religion. Rome tried to erase any history of the Celts, so they destroyed almost everything. I am sorry you are not correct.

  • @TheCauthBodva oh alright that does make sense. Do you know any good Celtic fiction?

  • i have to do an assignment due thurs on the origin of the universe according to the celts, its the hardest ive ever done because apparently all their creation myths were lost over 1000 years ago. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Maybe you can try and download some e books from torrents on celtic mythology

  • @jamtheman3017 Wish I would have seen this 11 mos. ago...For anyone else who cares..Check out any decent copy of the Irish cycle of legends, Thomas Cahill's "How the Irish Saved Civilization" or Peter Beresford Ellis's "The Druids".....The ancient legends were developed by speakers of Q-Celtic probably Ancient Gaelic...But were written down centuries later by monks using the Latin alphabet write Old Irish.

  • @dsmacho I care! Taim a Ghra ar teanga fein chomh maith. This vid left out that the "Q-Celtic" ancestors of the Irish have some of the oldest genetic markers in Europe (it is also thought they are related to the Basques) Irish Aristocracy did not give up their truly celtic ways until the english made them by law to stop dressing, acting and speaking Irish in the late 1500s. Ireland is the only truly celtic country in the world today!!!

  • a lot of celts did have blondish hair becuz they used lime paste to lighten & stiffen their hair into spikes to frighten their enemies. they also were known for going into battle naked w/their phallus' erect to show their virility. celtic women fought along side the men as well & were much feard by Julius Caesar. he wouldnt battle the clets if they had their women fighting w/them so fierce were the women. celtic women were highly prized trophys of war back then.

  • ". . .the Celts are the Gaels from Spain . . ."

You appear to be confusing the Kelts with the Irish.

  • @IsaacBickerstaffEsq Perhaps it is because they are?????

  • "Perhaps it is because they are?"

The Irish being Kelts does not imply that Kelts are Irish.

The Irish Kelts may have originated in Spain, but the Kelts did not. Keltic culture originated in the east and at its hight was pan-European.

While the OP is correct that the Irish are dark haired (blonds and redheads coming from the minority Norse influence), the particular dark coloration of many modern Spanish isn't Keltic in origin.

  • I was born in texas so red neck fits better. I am married to a yellow woman though. Come on that was a good post. FTL= faster than lightspeed. and that bull honkey was from riley martin. I just changed it up. have a nice day sir

  • dude black and red

  • Democracy is not really freedom.

  • Romans, and greeks had been known to take ideas from other people then claim them as their own. Romans tried many times to take over the land of the celts but it never worked. The romans over expanded themselves which resulted in their extinction. We should learn what happened to the romans because it can happen to America. Besides Ireland has higher per capita income than Italy and Greece today. You would think with all the so called knowledge they had they could do better.

  • 5:28......Bards were Druids! and they sang theyre stories!

  • Lime water they put in there hair and bleached it and it made it stiff and stick up to give a frightening look while in battle. You sound like an educated person would you be able to give me any information regarding the celtic afterlife, im doing an assignment for school and i can't seem to attain much information about the aterlife.

  • you morons need to read a history book! Stop talking about it like you know. I do! I was there! It was the beavians and the targzesians that destroyed rome. All the way to the ground! Their high density probing laser leaves nothing to the imagination. Riley Martin FTW!

  • FTL! FTL!

  • Apparent FTL is not excluded by general relativity. Examples of apparent FTL proposals are the Alcubierre drive and the traversable wormhole, although the physical plausibility of these solutions is uncertain. You have done your homework son. FTL=Faster than light. And you are 100% right. Those High density probing lasers are truly FTL! God blease the neptonians, beavian, targzesians, and the Skree.

  • totally

  • they were red and blonde haired. Fact!!

  • Then where did the irish recieve such traits from?

  • celts were the European native american indians by the religen mears each other

  • I would actually thank the Greeks more for today's society. After all the Athenians did invent democracy in 505BC. To them barbarians and such were inferior, as battle techniques were unorganised and technology wasn't as advanced. Racism definitely existed. The whole idea was things were run by status, even in democracy. And barbarians were not seen as equals. As far as empire goes, it was still a central leading civilization, government or not. I didn't study celts though, only roamans+greeks

  • the sack of rome in was 390 bc. next time they attacked 100 yaers after , they were destoryed

  • madsdahlc look at history no one's ever destroyed a few all ways cross breed

  • ain't an empire. No centralised government of ANY sort - no empire. I know: the romans fought amongst themselves too. But, they fought for the control of their pseudo-centralised government. Not as mere conquest of a personal "fief".

  • As for the racism of the romans... you can't really deny that. I mean, if I have any bias, I am pro-hellenic, yet I have to admit they were xenophobic. And so were the romans. As for the Celtic empire that ruled all europe... come on. Get a grip. It's like saying that the Habsburgs ruled the HRE (other than nominally). It ain't rule if you don't really rule. Something might be said for a widespread dissemination of their culture (the Haltstatt and La tene, no? not sure there), as a rule, but it

  • There is a fair degree of pro roman and pro celt bias in the comments here. As for the constant infighting, the greeks had the same. And andy7666 your comment smacks of rasicsm (not to say you are, just...). And it's not like we are truly on the verge of extinction, or more importantly, that cultural ideas which originated in europe are on the verge of extinction (rationalism from ancient greece, for example). Though I do dread the prospect of polished europeised east asian mysticism. New dark..

  • The Romans saw themselves as racially superior to the Celts. Racism has existed for a long time, since the dawn of man.

  • Great follow-up to part 1, thanks again for sharing these! 5***** for both! Cheers!

  • ... economic thought in a world where economy as such wasn't really thought of, for example. I am speaking primarily of the Greek world, since my knowledge lies mostly there. My point is... we cannot expect a religion (broadly speaking) that promotes enviromentalism in a world without industrial polution; where destruction of nature isn't a problem for the people, nor can they envision limitation of natural resources. Analogous to the exploitation of the world's oceans, in a way.

  • I was sorely dissapointed when that woman said they were the first green movement. One of the problems of studying history is the problem of imposing modern views and opinions on a vastly different world; with people of vastly different worldviews. I cannot claim with certainty that it was not like a green movement (how could we know anything in history with certainty, given the lack of evidence), but surely, we can see an evolution of ideas; so we cannot expect to recognize Keynesian...

  • "I was sorely dissapointed when that woman said they were the first green movement. One of the problems of studying history is the problem of imposing modern views and opinions on a vastly different world;"

You are right, but she´s not sooo totally wrong, celts refused the idea of empire and

a centralized state, as well nature and spirituality had a huge meaning to them.

Anyway, it makes more sense to say the green movement was influenced by their ideas than otherwise.´

  • I love how the language of Welsh is coming back and that celtic traditions and love is still common in Wales, Scotland and Ireland

  • Many old things are reviving themselves again =)

Myself, I am working on learning Icelandic. I think all cultures of the past are going to be reappearing over the next 200 years.

  • Indeed, if not out of respect, possibly due to the end of the world and the survival of the fittest ;)

*dreams of post-apocalyptic tribal warfare based on celtic tradition*

  • oh yeah!

i wish to go Wales one day!

  • I guess you didn't watch this video or at least pay attention. I am so over people saying evil bad romans blah blah blah....uhhh the Celts attacked Rome first in 387bc.

So the Romans in their typical fashion of never forgetting got their payback years later.

  • STRABO AND DIODORUS SIKELIOTIS WERE GREEKS AND NOT ROMANS!

How can someone give all these money and effort to make a good movie and say such inaccurate things?

  • Celts were awesome, Rome ate shit and now is shit as it is dead. :D. End of story

  • All empires rise and fall.

  • Haha I'am irish, and I'am glad the roman empire is gone with the wind. The only thing they have left is empty buildings. The celts are still here doing what they do best.

  • BEER!!!

  • to say celts never gave nothing is stupid if the scots are celts then they modernissed the world almost everything used today is scotch were are the romans today enough said oh yes plus our empire was larger than romes also

  • And don't forget... Irish scholars preserved the works of European civilization so that we can read them here today!

  • @albagubrath1984 the scots are not celts, the picts we're celts but the scots have mostly Norse DNA

  • 'they also ruled Europe for almost 1000 years before Christ' in what sense did the Celts rule Europe, they could not even govern themselves, these savages were too busy killing each other. All they did was run up and down the continent and terrorise people. If you want to equate these people to others ,lets say that the Celts were equal to the Vandals. Sorry to hurt your 'Celtic half' pride.

  • At least I'm proud of something.

  • Look at Celtic art work and literature..not the work of mindless savages, I suppose there was nothing savage about Roman society when people were watching acts of brutality and forced bestiality etc for entertainment in the Colosseum

  • actually a form of their language is still spoken in Ireland and parts of Scotland...

Gaelic? is that how you spell it?

the romans never got that far...

also, contrary to popular beliefe the romans did try to conquer the ancient scots and lost thousands before they left empty handed...even the english could never truely conquer the scots....the throne of their country was inhereited by a scotish king.

  • Irish Gaelic is still strong.

Scottish Gaelic is on the brink of extinction.

And we have a strong collection and preservation of Manx. the Gaelic of the Isle of Man

  • all those half truths flinged around here, most of those the things stated here a false or at least shady. We know nothing about how the celts saw themselfs. britassh just quotes some roman historian, tru3e0ll3r just says what he saw in 'the gladiator'. neither is true, things aren't so black and white, u know.

  • The Romans were light years ahead of the Celts. The Romans depicted these people as savages and uncouth, these people could not even codify their own language.Their legacy died out at about the same time as the height of the Roman empire. They were absorbed into the empire as it grew and were eventually Romanized. The Celts as a story is often mystically portrayed, but to be brutally honest they gave us nothing.

  • Aside from a genetic legacy you are probably correct but look at the wonderful artefacts of the time, the monastaries and the preservation of Christianity (depends wether you see that as a good thing or not). They also ruled Europe for almost 1000 years before Christ and, as you say, the height of Roman power. I'm rather proud of my Celtic half thanks very much!

  • so your going by roman accounts of a people they were are war with...well of course there could be no bias there. And as for legacy dying out, that in itself is a stupid statement, no people's legacy dies out. And what was so primitive about celts? They lead no worse lives than romans and were on their way to becoming as advanced if they hadn't been run down by romans and then afflicted with a thing known as christianity.

  • this is a continuation of my rant above :)

the ruling family of england makes their claim through scotish blood ( a very dubious claim ). so, many of englands accomplishments happened while being ruled by a celt...not to mention the endless list of battles won by their Highland units...Remember that empire that the sun used to never set upon? It was carved by Celts Under the leadership of a Celt. Also Keep in mind that before a scot took the throne of england Celts generally kicked there ass.

  • And when they were kicking their ass England was thought to be the strongest power on earth....there you have it....shut your mouth

  • It's very interesting to see how things were going in their culture. I like their style of art just as mutch as their music. Each year we do have in Holland a big medieval Celtic festival.

  • That what this documentary states with a grain of salt. It uses the catch-all name Celts too much and too many of it's statements lead viewers to an askewed opinion that the celts were all the same.

  • Around 1:50 this video states that for the CELTS fighting was the norm for settling trival disputes. I'm not sure about the Gallic celts, but for the Irish & Scottish this is untrue. Irish, and thus Scottish, society was structured in such a way that civil disputes were settled in a sort of court of law. However if one of the parties refused to go to court over the dispute the other party's clan could attack that clan and take what it deemed as a fitting compensation.

  • they liked booty. hahahahahaaaahhhaaa, me 2.

  • welsh and irish and scots are more celtic than the english

  • The first Green Movement? I thought the Indigenous inhabitants of Australia were the first

  • which are the real unmixed original Celts?Welsh, Irish or Scots???

  • hm thats a good question, dont think anyway knows, but id like to find out :), im welsh btw

  • celts still Rule .

  • The Celts were NOT illiterate. We have much from them using Greek, later Latin, Phoenician and Etruscan. The Gauls used these, and the Gael used things like Ogham later on for boundires etc. I love how the Druid class is always depicted in all white, that is NOT how it was by Brehon law.

  • No wonder the Celts were subdued - constant infighting! All the peoples of Europe are brothers, I hope that we see no more wars like those of the 20th century - White European peoples have gone from being over a third of the worlds population to 8% and dwindeling; The bringers of civilisation are on the verge of extinction - no more brothers wars!

  • I just want to say thank you for posting this--many of us can't (for various reasons) get The Discovery Channel. I really appreciate your time & effort to record and upload this!

  • Thanks for your comment. I really appreciate it.

  • @saif316 thank you for this awesome documentry, i appreciate the time that you spend to upload this documentry :)

  • @gabrielcool427

No problem. Thanks a lot for your nice comment.

  • 9:38 The classical writer Diodoros Sikelos wasn't roman, he was greek.
