The story about the microwave doesn't make sense. It's a myth (soundly busted on MythBusters) that microwaves cook from the inside out. They cook outside-in like any oven, so it wouldn't prevent the outside from rotting while the centre was still frozen. It would cook the outside.

@WalterLiddy They had to get as much of the squid to room temperature at approx. the same time as they could. They wouldn't have set it up to be cooked. They could use the right frequency of microwaves to target water more than other things, and could vary the amount, time, etc. on each part with a sophisticated enough set up. Microwaves could be more specific to water than just heat, that's the point.

the squid was not thawed in a microwave. that suggestion was discarded. it was left to thaw out in a tank of salty water so it wouldn't rot.

The squid Stephen said was taken to new zealand is now on display in Te Papa (wellington Museum), and there is a video about how they got it from the fishing boat to the tank in the middle of the animal bit in Te Papa.
