the way i see it daves solos are the basic scale notes, but in a complex replayed rhythm, kirk experiments more, and gets out of his comfort zone, just my opinion
See... when I think of Kirk's top solos Dyers Eve, One, and Master of Puppets come to mind. Pretty sure Kirk wrote those ones. I personally think both are great guitarists anyway.
@Link07250 Kirk does use wah but if you compare the intro solo of headcrusher to the second solo in Puppets you will see that Kirk plays awesome solos (by the way there is no wah on the puppets solos). Kirk uses more than two notes and wah, again with headcrusher, Dave is playind like 6 consecutive notes over, and over. Kirk adds a little more feel to the solo, Dave is just aggressive, if you were a musician (I mean a pro not a guy who is trying to teach himself) you would understand.
Yes I agree on Kirk has more feel and more "soul" in his solos. I am just one who prefers the harder, more melodic solos that Dave provides. Thing is, Dave is more of a Thrash Metal guitarist while Kirk is more of a Thrash Rock guitarist. They both are amazing. I am professional classical guitarist, that's something I would not lie about

From a guitarist perspective, I think Kirk makes his solos very unique and melodic which you can differentiate right away. He mixes blues with classical techniques, and each solo progresses to some climax point in a clean way. (at least on the recordings). Dave is awesome too, but I have always considered Dave to be more of a rhythm guitarist with some lead chops. I think it would have been better to have compared James vs. Dave. Just a thought..... I think Dave would come on top on rhythm.

This was probably the FAIREST video comparison between these two guys I've seen on youtube. Seriously, he picked some pretty awesome solos from BOTH guitarists. Very well known songs, and therefore a more difficult choice to make. For some. Dave is a LOT better than Kirk, there's no doubt about that. It SHOULD be obvious to anyone who plays guitar. If it's not, then I doubt the non-believers play guitar at all. I love both these guys, but Dave wins this, no question about it.

@JM8197 most of Kirk's solos consist of nothing BUT tremolo picking a single string or two. How can you compare Dave's picking speed to Kirk's? They're both rapid picking guitarists, Dave just accels at solos far more than Kirk does for the mere fact that he's not nearly as repetative as Kirk.
Mustaine is in another league. Far more innovative. Hammett cant even complete a solo without slipping outa key. I cringe every time I hear one of solos. I use Hammett as an example of how not to do a solo to my students.

@prodirockerd Dave plays both major and minor pentatonic and chromatics . As does Hammett. But the big difference is phrasing and staying in key, which Hammett has a problem with both. His technique is very weak. Mustaine puts far more thought into what he is playing too. It's evident in his solos without a doubt.

Both are incredible! If both were given each others songs to play, no doubt, both could play each others stuff. It really depends on the preference of songs that you like. I tend to like the thrash metal really well. Especially, Slayer's hardcore dark epics; such as, Bloodline and Seasons in the Abyss. When comparing Megadeath's Syphony of Destruction to Metallica's Death Magnetic album, I find both styles of music really hardcore & creative. I do see some of Dave's solos being more technical.
god both of these guitarists are unbeleivably skilled. I have come to the self conclusion, and after listening to both bands all my life, that Dave Mustaines riffs may not be as heavy as Kirks, but Mustaine takes the cake for solos
KIrk was great til he started abusing the Wah pedal. People need to remember Dave wasn't kicked out of Metallica because he sucked, it was because he was a drunk druggy, the irony that that is. Kirk was a good enough replacement, but there's no doubt that Dave is a better guitarist.
I'm a huge fan of both, but Dave's soloing is much more complex and every one of his solos sound different on every record. Kirk is awesome too, but I believe Kirk's absolute best soloing was on Master Of Puppets album. After that, he uses the whammy bar a little too much and it gets watered down. I really wish this debate would stop. It's gotten way too old. Both Dave and Kirk are best friends now, they're both awesome lead players, and nothing else matters.
im gonna say Dave, the one thing i cant stand about Hammett is that brilliant songs like Sanitarium or One, have such a nice and soft oppening, but then comes a Shredding solo to spoil it. =P... well take that back, Nothing Else Matters and Fade to Black has awesome solos. but its just that songs like One really dont need a shredding solo. =P my oppinion.....

@Metadeth1997 the only really good solo that I know of (I cant stand any Metallica after the first 4 albums) that He might not have stole frome Dave or had written by by James is possibly Bounded By Blood but I dont know if he or Gary Holt wrote that one and FYI there are songs written by Dave on Master

kirk is much much better, he puts his solos together way better, mustaine just does a bunch of random licks, kirk actually threads the solo together and well listen to solos like, the god that failed, outlaw torn, blackened, call of ktulu...plus kirk has won quiet a few awards for his excellence...all hail kirk hammett the undisputed LORD OF THE STRINGS

Quizas mustaine ha hecho muy buenos solos es inteligente y tiene un estilo muy particular pero la verdad es que en vivo pierde su habilidad tiene mucho arreglo en el studio que hace q suene mejor pero enrealidad hammett es algo repetitivo por que es el estilo de metallica ya que el toka de otras maneras tmbn debemos recordar que estudio con satriani y toko con friedman pero el en vivo le deja la vara muy alta a mustaine

@JM8197 most of Kirk's solos consist of nothing BUT tremolo picking a single string or two. How can you compare Dave's picking speed to Kirk's? They're both rapid picking guitarists, Dave just accels at solos far more than Kirk does for the mere fact that he's not nearly as repetative as Kirk.

@prodirockerd Dave plays both major and minor pentatonic and chromatics . As does Hammett. But the big difference is phrasing and staying in key, which Hammett has a problem with both. His technique is very weak. Mustaine puts far more thought into what he is playing too. It's evident in his solos without a doubt.

Both are incredible! If both were given each others songs to play, no doubt, both could play each others stuff. It really depends on the preference of songs that you like. I tend to like the thrash metal really well. Especially, Slayer's hardcore dark epics; such as, Bloodline and Seasons in the Abyss. When comparing Megadeath's Syphony of Destruction to Metallica's Death Magnetic album, I find both styles of music really hardcore & creative. I do see some of Dave's solos being more technical.

I'm a huge fan of both, but Dave's soloing is much more complex and every one of his solos sound different on every record. Kirk is awesome too, but I believe Kirk's absolute best soloing was on Master Of Puppets album. After that, he uses the whammy bar a little too much and it gets watered down. I really wish this debate would stop. It's gotten way too old. Both Dave and Kirk are best friends now, they're both awesome lead players, and nothing else matters.

That's because it's not even Dave's solos. Kirk just used some of Dave's licks.They barley recorded anything with Dave when Kirk got in and I'm sure Dave didn't come to the studio to help Kirk with the solos.

About the level of technique in the solos you can't argue, but it also depends on personal taste. So you can't really say that Megadeth's solos are better (same way you can't say Metallica's are better). But hey, both bands write explosive riffs. You can't compare bands man. However you can compare 2 guitar players from the same genre. And here Kirk wins.
