Crawford got all the accolades for this performance, and rightfully so, but these two and a half minutes proved Ann Blythe was more than an equal to J C . As she shows her true colors, the room temp drops 20 degrees!!!
Watch the whole movie. Veda gets slapped my Mildred earlier. After she slaps her, she feels remorse and utters the line, "I would rather have cut off my hand . . . " Yeah, right!
the first time i saw this on tcm made me want to pull the daughter's hair till she's bald. she's such an ungrateful, disrespectful bitch. it made me smile when she tried to steal her mother's boyfriend but he told her he would never leave her mother for her. it's like sweet revenge, it's like a douse of ice water. hahaha. poor girl. serves her right. and i still want to punch her. first time i saw joan crawford play an underdog.
@dynamic27ph yeah, it's just a shame that in the novel Veda gets Monty too and they set to leave for New York... Mildred should have strangled her, the cheap bitch.
Mildred daughter veda is the most ungrateful spoil and disrespect child i never saw i am glad her mother like her ass in face and knock some sense into her head of she 's the child and she the parent not the other way around and that she wont put up with her disrespecting her like that go mildred you get the right thing in slapping your daughter .

Joan has the sexiest most beautiful diction ever. And I'm sure that when Veda was talking about her impoverished upbringing that it must have struck a cord with Joan who had a realllyyyy shitty upbringing :(
Crawford only took this role because it was omniscient of her and Christina's relationship. In reality, I side with Christina. Crawford was NEVER a humble person, ever. Crawford was abusive, even her staff saw her beat her adopted daughter.
What great writing! Now this is movie making at it's finest. Inn order for many actors to win an Oscar, the writing has to be so good that they can't help but win. Thus, Crawford's win for Mildred Pierce.
I would have expected her daughter appreciate her a slight bit more. She was working her butt off with honest jobs and Veda just took it all, abusing her mother's love.
@18911118 well vedas character started out as 15 or 16 and ended like 17 or 18 maybe 19, i mean alot of actors/actresses dont always play their exact ages, sometimes movies are along a long timeframe, sometimes they use different actors/actresses playing the character at different points in their lives but not if its only a few years especially if its a young adult
I watched this movie yesterday and it is the first "film noir" movie i've ever seen - if all film noir's are like this then I will definately be watching more cause this movie was AWESOME! And Joan Crawford is so pretty - I can't believe she was a psyco mum??
no i agree that Vida is a sociopath, the way she is overindulged and validated for everything with little to no consequences is the textbook example of how children like vida grow up to be manipulative, conniving, deviants, who have no sense of remorse or empathy.
@nauort23 Mildred Pierce didn't "create [this] monster". Vida was rotten to the core in spite of everything her mother did for her. Vida had opportunism and a lack of human regard hard-wired into her DNA. Have you watched the entire movie? Sure some of today's children are conditioned but some are simply rotten from the womb.
@Shubael1809 Bullshit. You're exactly what I'm talking about. Veda is a spoiled brat. PERIOD. And Mildred did most of the spoiling, which was one of the reasons her husband drifted away. All of Veda's selfishness was nurtured at home. Like many parents today, her mother was her servant, and was only there to supply material luxuries. She wasn't BORN with that outlook. Her mother supplied it. Have YOU watched the entire movie--or any of your own culture, for that matter?
@nauort23 Well you leave a great deal of room for diagreement eh? Shut the fuck up moron. Vida is the original "bad seed". You're some foolish Middle American moralist who's comparing Mildred Pierce to "everything that's wrong with America today". Yawn...... And how the Christ do you know what her DNA was or was not... or that she wasn't "born that way". Heard of Jeffrey Dahmer? I've watched the movie and understood it entirely unlike you. I'll bet you're a practicing Christian too.
@Shubael1809 I'm not a christian and, actually, it's the religious people in this world who buy into the "bad seed" theories of child psychology. Veda is not a serial murdering psychotic bad seed, like Rhoda from the movie (Bad Seed) or Jeffrey Dahmer. She's a spoiled brat--one of the signs of which is the inability to be disagreed with! lol. Fool.
@nauort23 How the hell do you know what Cain had in mind as he took paper to pen. You sound angry and disgruntled as though you were neglected as a child. .. fucking moron I swear...
@Shubael1809 Quit ranting and swearing, idiot. M.P. is NOT the story of a psychopath killer bad-seed daughter. It is a cautionary tale to 20th Century Americans about spoiling their children materially and not keeping them in check. I don't believe Cain is mentioned anywhere in the movie, nor do I know why you're brandishing his name now, so soon after erroneously accusing me of being "a practicing Christian". After a few rounds with you, I am beginning to believe in "bad seeds", though.
@nauort23 Let it go Vida. And James M. Cain WROTE Mildred Pierce oh informed one. Good. You believe in "bad seeds". That was my goal and such (you'll agree) is the case with Vida in "Mildred Pierce". For someone who wants to be taken seriously, it would help if you knew the author of the novel on which the film was based!! lol! That's why I'm "brandishing his name". Check your sources much? What a moron you are.
You are right, this nauort23 is WRONG! Midred puts up with this horrible little bitch and encourages her to continue being that way. What is worse is that I see lots of self-righteous parents today that are just as bad. Raising horrible little selfish brats who are allergic to everything because of their stupid parents.
@deniseineb You just agreed with everything I said, but are erroneously ascribing it to what Shubael1809 said. I was the one saying that Mildred created the monster, if you bothered to read the comments correctly. So, I believe your "you are RUDE and ignorant" was not meant for me. But, thanks, anyway...
@Shubael1809 vida was everything you said she is BECAUSE mildred spoiled her and indulged her. Look up sociopath/psychopath and you will get an idea of what type of environment that many of them come from. They come form families like vida's.
@Shubael1809 Exactly. Joan plays the self-sacrificing, loving mother, and her daughter is a little monster. How anyone could not know this is beyond me...
people need to remember the original movie, that is 10x better than the new HBO mini series, and kate winslet is a wonderful actress, but no actress today comes close to joan crawfords talent
@KURISUCHRIS99 Ironic, isn't it. I believe Joan's daughter. She was a horrible, evil bitch who tortured her children. She was not that great an actress. But I liked the end of the movie better. Vida went to prison. She deserves it!
this is a classic scene. Joan was at her finest here...but not take ANYTHING away from Ann Blythe who was AMAZING. I must say I love this movie and so looked forward to the HBO version. The HBO version...DREADFUL!
It's so funny that as old as this film is, it tells the tale of how kids are today, spoiled by their parents to the point that when they get older they don't appreciate their parents no matter what they had done for them. Their disrespectful and think people owes them something. I would've beat the shit out of Veda, then threw out into the streets and her shit after her. But this was a good movie, I loved it...
Hard to believe Joan was a Mommy Dearest after seeing this....She Aced this role...and This movie (made before my parents time) is on the money! And that nasty Vida was so pretty...(what man could resist?) One of my top 5 Oldies! To date, have found few Classics as good.
Vida looked into her mother's eyes and knew she was not messin' around with her Mildred Pierce meant business! Instantly Vida turned and ran up the stairs to gather her things up quickly before Mildred could do what she said she was gonna do. Classic! And kind of funny.
The key to understading this relationship is that Mildred loves her daughter so much she is willing to do anything for her and thus overlook many of Veda's shortcomings
In the end Veda's cunning attitude and selfish ways prove to be her very undoing and Mildred is left with no option but to wash her hands off her troublesome, spiteful and vindictive daughter
The new HBO mini series is more true to the novel than the 1945 film. That's not to take anything away from what a great movie it is....
I cannot believe this is being remade as a miniseries. Kate Winslet cannot ever hope to reprise Joan Crawford's role. And adding a nude scene??? Seriously?? SHOULDN'T BE TOUCHED!!!
This scene is great because its a play on real history. Joan's real-life mother took in the wash and they lived over a store front in a rural town... something Joan despised her for and publically stated she would never stoop as low as her mother had to pay the bills! Loves it!
she really wasnt demanding she gave her everything she wanted ,how was what veda did right? anyone would be pissed off if thier daughter told all those lies and cheated just for money
I showed my mom this movie for the very first time a few months ago. My mom was balling up her fist and was dismayed. She was like, "OH hell NO!!" LOL
@reesescupbrandy1 omg look at her! VEDA "A Timeless'character, who up through today there are the VEDA type children for which clearly IMO are just like her as the movie portray..Love the actress however,he is a great woman.and very talented, lovely actress, age nicely Love Ann Blythe in Mildred Pierce, and Love Joan Crawford in this incredible-well done movie.... Night all.adios.
What sets it off is when Veda admits that she deceived Ted Forrester by hinting she was expecting "a little bundle from heaven"...and receiving a $10,000 check [thanks to Wally, the lawyer] to "keep it quiet". When Mildred finds out the truth (especially about Veda), it leads into one of the most volatile mother/daughter confrontations in screen history...
Shouldn't Mildred be held accountable for creating this bitch and releasing her into the world?

This scene is great because its a play on real history. Joan's real-life mother took in the wash and they lived over a store front in a rural town... something Joan despised her for and publically stated she would never stoop as low as her mother had to pay the bills! Loves it!

how did Mildred deserve it?
KURISUCHRIS99 11 months ago
@KURISUCHRIS99 Because of her demanding and over control personality! Simply put, Vida just got fed up...period!

I showed my mom this movie for the very first time a few months ago. My mom was balling up her fist and was dismayed. She was like, "OH hell NO!!" LOL
