I love the intro of this Ventura Highway song...it's like you are being lull to sleep and good company for travelling. Thanks a million for bringing these songs to the world!!!!
Dan you will be missed. My youth included MANY hours of this great music. When I would go to Italy in the summer my cousins and friends always wanted to listen to the casettes of America. God bless you Daniel. Say hello to all our loved ones and sing to them. :) Thank You. You will not be forgotten..
I used to live in Calabasas, California not far from the Ventura Highway from 1971 to 1973.This song brings back memories of great times and really great people.I fully agree with MrBuc 128 that we really want and need true talent.Sound bites and remixes of 40 year-old music and formula lyrics suck.
Thanks for all the corresponding on your site. Will miss that. Was always a pleasure to hear from you too with all your kind words, incitefullness and humor.
i once sat behind a bunch of older guys with guitars on a southwest flight .. i asked em if they were in a band .. they replied ya we're america . i was OO .... they were really nice guys and made the flight really enjoyable . sad day dan was too young to go . rip !
Nah, man. Silly surrealistic lyrics are essential for America. It wouldn't be Ventura Highway without alligator lizards in the air =P. And by far this is their best song ever, but Horse and Tin Man also come quite close.
Holy mackeral the middle guitarist is carrying the whole song? Double times it the whole way through meanwhile sings like he is laying on the grass relaxing!
aligator lizards in the air.....they couldnt have come up with a better line then that....the songs is awsome till that stupid line...i hope they stopped dropping acid after this song came out
We need this type of band today making guitar oriented music. The Eagles, America bands like that. No bullshit just well written songs played by "Musicians" that have melody.Bands that are known for their music not for how they look..Bands that play their own instruments and have developed their skills over a periodof years. Not American Idol hacks that become famous overnight just because they have a decent voice only to forgotten the next season.
@MrBuc128 I get where you're coming from, and I agree with the sentiment, but I think a lot of highly talented vocalists might take issue. I can think of two very successful vocalists (Pat Benatar and James La Brie of Dream Theater) who started out in opera and later went to rock. As a semi-pro rock musician, I gotta tell you that good vocalists are really hard to find, and absolutely necessary, whether or not they also play an instrument.
@MrBuc128 I hate Australian Idol. The charts wre changed to wholeslae, not retial, to suit these idiots so they could go straight to no 1. It put me off listening to the top 40 for life. I agree wholehearedly with your comments and am saddened by the passing of Dan Peek. I saw America on tour here in Australia back in 1998. There is a bus company called Ventura here in Melboure,Australia!
just saying that if you didn't have good music in the 1960's early 1970's your wouldn't sell many Records, everything was word of mouth, woodstock the movie
made Santana and CSN&Y....everything was word of mouth, and radio play
To all you very smart people in youtube land...This is pure music there playing, no mixing and layering, double voice needed like cheaters and nobodys of today that can't sing in tune or ryme a verse.Id like to listen to any singer today sing live with out the help of the mixer board >>.yes the acid back then was pure also 420,125
Damn those magic mixing boards! Pray tell, is it the EQ's or the polarity switch that's correcting timing and pitch? Obviously you don't listen to Grizzly Bear or Margot & The Nuclear So So's though, there are some serious performers out there today, they just don't garnish the attention that bands like America were able to in the 70's.
@patowenmusic Why are you laughing? This method is still used by the best professionals, particularly in the studio. Some say it is superior to the magnetic pickup and piezo sounds.
Reminds me of my dear Grandad...he used to love this song! When ever I hear it I can still see him sitting by his pond on a summers day...in his shorts, with a cup of tea in one hand and a cigarette in the other...just watching the fish and smiling to himself! Beautiful memories of an amazing guy....thank u so much for posting :o) xxx
yeah this is a great song and a great band..and this is no disrepect meant at all..but...i think they may be lipsinking this performance..or am i just crazy..lol
@kozmoses No they're not lipsynching, the footage is a bit choppy here. It's from a 1970's German TV show called Musikladen. Search youtube for musikladen and you'll find lots of live performances
